Polls are usually done by phone, and have a sampling anywhere from 500 to 20,000. They try to put together a cohort of a broad sampling of people in different areas, for the national polls. Even with small numbers of responses, they can get a pretty decent picture of what the overall thinks. Just remember, the only poll that really decides anything is when you go and vote.

You are asking the right questions. Forbes had a good article yesterday breaking out the major polls with polling methods, numbers, population etc. A simple random sample of registered voters would be a good goal.

You are right not to trust him. Average polls on a national basis are meaningless. Elections take place at the STATE level and determine who gets into the Electoral College; the College then chooses the President based on vote percentages at the state level. The national averages don't affect that at all.

Democrats can show they're on the side of democracy by having a ranked choice vote and letting the voters pick the 2 who will make up the ticket.
Please organize a national primary in the next week, would you? Print up, and design for electronic voting machines, about 40 million ballots today and get them out on trucks to all the states. Make sure they conform to each state's laws about how a ballot must be constructed. That includes translating the ballot into however many languages California and perhaps other states require. You decide who gets on the ballot and who doesn't. Set up polling places and get the requisite volunteers in them on, say, July 30th. Think you could do that for us?
