the very beginning with "holga, holga, holga, the holga, holga, M6, holga, holga.." made me spray my morning coffee across the table... i am so easy to entertain.
The modern attraction of the Holga is amazing. In 1954 ( 8 years old) I inherited an Ansco Pioneer snapshot camera.(620 roll film; 6x9cm format; one speed shutter, one aperture lens) made around 1950. For years we had a family photo album with pictures I took with it from a 1954 road trip to the Grand Canyon, probably planting the photo bug in me for the rest of my life. Shot an early form of Kodacolor, pretty poor color fidelity even when new. With all that, it still took photos which vastly surpass the ability of a Holga. There were huge numbers of such box cameras up to the 1906s. They were satisfactory because they mainly used a medium speed B&W film with a huge dynamic range, like Kodak Verichrome. The concept of over- or under-exposure on Verichrome was almost irrelevant. Since most consumer processing returned B&W contact prints, sharpness and grain were non-issues. Times, they change unless you are drawn to a Holga of course. How can an 80 year old box camera embarrass a Holga? It used a simple glass lens rather than a plastic lens (no cheap optical plastics in 1950) and the film plane curves to match focus and cancel lens distortion. On ebay - $15 plus shipping, more or less.
It sounds like youre one of these people who arent capable of taking good photos with a classic camera like the Holga. first off, its a toy camera.. theres a certain look you should be going for if youre using a Holga and beautiful, sharp photos shouldnt be one of them. Second, if youre not gonna be handling the development yourselft to really make things pop. B&W photos look beautiful coming from a Holga assuming the photographer has a good eye.
I love my silly Holga - I found that if I set the focus setting in between long and mid range, it makes my mid-range shots a bit distorted, not blurry. Shamelessly pushed Ektar 100 through it, though mine is taped up like an engineer's lunchbox so I have no light leaks. (Oh, and I taped over the "exposure" switch, because I heard that was a major light leak source).
The Holga 120 was my first medium format camera and I used it really heavily for ~5 years. It’s great for fun carefree shooting but really can’t justify it nowadays with these film prices 🤣🤣
At least there are some decent 35mm point and shoots you can get these days, like that Half Frame Kodak camera! I hope that acts as some people's gateway drug into film photography!
Well it has a very particular look.. this and a Diana.. if youre not wanting that look then theres no point but dont agree with this dude about not having a reason for a Holga.. sounds like this dude isnt a very good phtographer so Im glad I saw this video of his first before the rest so now I know not to waste time on him. Hes the ONLY photographer on YT Ive come across who doesnt find the Holga to be a classic Toy camera.. his eye must not be very good. been about 2 years since my film-obsessed days and recently just getting back into photography again, so glad to see your content around and well after all that time
Wow, This is my introduction to your channel.. the algorithm brought me here and the immediate thing I noticed was the quality of your video. Chill vibe, and changing to a less "widescreen" aspect ratio for the video really adds a nice finishing touch, something I didn't know I wanted to see more of.
I have watched thousands of UA-cam videos, and you are definitely my favorite creator. Sarcastic, dry and sometimes childish puns, lofi, dog, and actually appealing and impressive art, both with videography and photography. Thank you, and please keep them coming.
I have two Holgas and actually really like them. One Flash model with glass lens, and one of the basic models. I've never had light leaks, even without tape, and you can get a cable release adapter for long exposures. You're right, it's definitely a "look", but that's what I am going for with these cameras. I have plenty of other "serious" medium format cameras, but sometimes, I just want the lo-fi aesthetic in my work.
A major improvement to this with a similar optical look would be any old uncoated folding camera, or in a more similar form factor, the Bellora Bella 66 (metal body, glass lens, German made) or the Agfa Isola tube camera which I prefer because it has F6.3, F11 and 1/100, 1/30, and all of these options will have B mode with cable release.
You can modify the shutter release to take a shutter release cable. Actually makes great long exposures! So long as you tape up the back and film counter window.
I am so GLAD you did this... shooting/testing the Holga... 'cause now I don't have to bother. Your commentary is fun because you are a king of sarcasm and dry humor.
I really love the Kodak Brownie Cresta II. It has a glass lens but is even more limited than the holga. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a "toy camera". The results are always unique and it's nice to use something so simple once in a while
You think the Holga is crap? Find a Diana and put a rollthrough it. You'll come running back to ol' Mama Holga in a hurry! The best way to prevent light leaks is to encase the camera in an opaque box. Light leaks are forgotten and your photos will not be discernably worse. And fsck Aerochrome. I want Kodak to make Tmax 400 in 4x5, 5x7 and 120 affordable again. Or else. (Or else I'll keep buying Ilford.)
That's cool that you went with the 16 images option, then shot them in landscape orientation rather than portrait. I never thought about using a Holga that way.
Your videos always have some elements of scatology humour. Usually quite funny but maybe unconnected to film photography. We certainly get to see quite a bit of your country which is very interesting. Thanks for the video.

@@GregoryVeizades Yes I do, I think it is a great channel. Also while copying the trichrome images onto slide film may be a bit complicated just doing the trichrome and digitally putting the images together seems like something that is not quite as hard. If I ever get a set of trichrome and ir filters I would in fact like to try it myself.
I used to shoot a holga135 a lot, so I had the focal ranges memorized. You can look it up, obviously there’s still an element of guessing but at least you know roughly how many meters it intends, or whatever. I even got a set of macro/close-up lenses and the occasionally produce shockingly sharp focus (in the center of the image). But it is a gamble to shoot. It’s hard to know what you’re getting from it. I often go back and forth about whether I prefer the holga (or ArgusC3) style of never exactly knowing what the shot is until it develops vs an SLR where you can be very precise about the shot. Getting exactly the image you were trying for is obviously satisfying but there’s a magic in the uncertainty of the “aim and hope” style of camera. Also you can buy an adapter for the holga120 that allows you to use a cable shutter control for long exposures. So it is actually good for that.
The Holga aquires a lot of patience and trial and error. We us the holga's in one of our photo classes and you have to shoot a lot to find the sweet spot of the lens where its the sharpest. To get rid of the light leaks you have to use black electrical tape instead of gaffers tape and also cover the window with a flap so you can open it when advancing the film. I have see a decade of people use the Holga and once you master the lens and the settings of your patercular holga you can get some amazing shots. I really think each holga is different of on another. I really recommend looking up David Burnett and his holga images, shooting the Olympics, presidents, soldiers etc...
You had a nice getaway and you got some really nice images from it. Not bad for that plastic box. I have often wrestled with that "what the hell" urge, but I am too lazy to give in and plunk my money down for the "adventure" of it. And yeah, that single stop between your options doesn't really cover much territory. I think you summed it up nicely. Great Baxter episode!
So...are we going to ignore the shots taken in 16mm film? Cause i cant wait to watch an episode of yours about it. Awesome piece of narrative asa always, Jason.
I bought a $20 Holga pinhole lens for my Canon T5 and I quite enjoy it for quick shots while on trips. The digital camera allows you to crank up some of the settings and it saturates the reds and blues for super nostalgic looking photos. I enjoy a little bit of natural grain and soft lighting so it is very fun to experiment with when I'm bored of my 50mm.
I so much love your videos, your fantastic kind of humour and your witty language. And actually those photo are not bad at all, pretty much the best you can get out of a Holga.
Love your videos man. Honestly I think you're one of the best out there doing it. All your jokes are hilarious and creative and the stories are so good and relatable. And your photos are so good. You kick ass dude 🤙🏽
Personally, I have both a holga camera, but also a dSLR adaptated holga lens. I really like using the digital camera adaptor if I want the nostalgic, slightly blurry, impressionistic vibe. Just because you won't waste any film on potentially shitty outcome. Also using a holga lens shooting video is also an interesting vibe. (Demo reel for those interested in what it looks like ua-cam.com/video/lL9JJBv1z8E/v-deo.html) Moreover, if you're going to be shooting on a holga, personally I think you pretty much should only be using black and white film. It really brings out the unique vignetting of the lens. Overall, I really love toy cameras (film cameras that have limited control over exposure) and I've done several large projects in art school with them. One of my professors similarly did her thesis specifically revolving around toy cameras. One thing that, if you already have an expensive film camera(s), I would recommend getting a holga by virtue that it is REALLY easy to take apart to do diy camera mods. I've seen some really interesting stuff with modding holgas that is pretty much sacrilege if you were to do it on a real camera. But by virtue of just how useless the camera is, you can fuck it up to do cool things. I've also experimented with Kodak "instamatic" line of cameras. That might be a better option for you bc the lens is glass if you really just can't handle the holga.
the thing about the cheapness of the camera might seem like a plus but then if you realize you can get a starter analogue camera with all the features this has and probably more for just 50 dollars second-hand it really doesnt seem that appealing anymore unless you are going for the "holga style"...
What's the point of a large negative size when there is no detail on the negative? The Holga look can be achieved on 135 film with no loss of artistic options. There simply is no good reason to waste 120 film in this.
If you're in one of the chosen special regions, you should be chugging the hard mountain dew lol. Honestly though, extreme props for that chug, I'm too old for that shit hahahah
