Your machine works perfectly for oranges, actually. These have been around Puerto Rico for decades. Orange sellers push carts of oranges in Old San Juan on hot days and peel oranges using machines such as yours on demand. The orange has all of the white part intact, then they cut a cone shaped lid at the top. After removing the lid, they use a blade to make punctures inside the orange. This releases the juices inside. Then we squeeze the juice, drink sips as we squeeze, then eat the orange by turning it round and round and taking bites until it is all gone. The white part has tons of fiber and makes one feel very full. It was one of my favorite treats as a child!

This actually looks like it might work well for me. I just want the outer dark orange peel off, but am okay with the pith staying on - I plan to run about 100-150 oranges through a juicer and/or blender and then freeze, so leaving the pith on works in both cases for me I think.

It actually does a good job peeling the orange. What more do you want?

For the pith to come completely off without clogging the blade. As you can see, that did not happen after 3 tries

That's exactly what I need, to peel the thick skin and to leave the vitamin rich pith intact for the juicer. Thanks, I'm ordering one now.

your machine works perfectly. You just want it to do something it wasn't design for. the first peel is the right way. after that peel, cutvit in half and suck it. you want it to end up as a mandarin, and that's not what it is for

Excellent comment. That’s exactly what I was thinking while watching her video. “The first peel is the right way”
The machine does a great job, after the first peel, just cut the Orange in half, and suck it.

WOW! The one thing that kept me from an apple peeler, is how thin the slices of apple are when your done, and this one will let me cut the apples any size I want!!!!! FANTASTIC, and it does potatoes too!!!!!!
WOWOWOWOWOW Getting one right now. Thank you!

Thanks, I haven't tried mangos yet but this peeler has a had time holding somewhat soft fruits, for example, pears. The blade doesn't get far before it knocks the fruit off the prongs with the softer fruits.

Looks more like an orange zester than an orange peeler. Although, I like how this peels the apples and potatoes so I may get one just for that. I've been taking the slicer/corer part of my apple thing off and using it to just peel but it just won't do potatoes well. Especially small ones. How does this one do on those small, too hard to hold onto without also peeling your hand, potatoes?

Thanks for your demonstration. I was looking for an apple and orange peeler for juicing. This is great!

I have one and I never considered it for my potatoes and apples. I'm gonna use it way more now. I use it mainly for oranges because in my country we peel our oranges with the pith on. Then we slice the oranges in halves or quarters and sort of suck/eat them that way.

Well, I guess I will have to add this thing to my want list! haha. I have two, five gallon buckets of pears in our extra refrigerator. I have been bringing them in a few at a time to ripen but soon need to begin to can them. Already worked up the other four buckets that had bug spots. Really enjoy all your video!

I like that it doesn't cut too deep because I need something like this to make orange peel candy and the thinner the better.
with the rest of the orange I'd just squeeze it

I think Oranges would be hard to peel down to the orange part as the pith sticks so well to the orange and there is no hard part like apples or potatoes have to let the blade take a bite.
It was fun to watch. I would like to get one of those gadgets look like your peeler but turn cucumbers and squash and potatoes into long noodles.

Inspector Gadget strikes again ! With so much variance in the peel and pith of oranges, I can see where it would have difficulty doing a good job. But, as you said, for taters and apples, it's a winner.

Thanks for this demonstration. I always thought that the 'white stuff' was very healthy. When I hand-peel an orange, I always keep that part, except for any loose strands.

Great review. I only own a hand peeler and use it for everything - kind of a long process when making pies or canning. I should consider one of these!

Part of the depth problem is probably that oranges have been getting thicker peels over the years, altered by the growers so that they can look better after going through shipping.

You could actually try turning the orange around, and doing the second peeling from the other side, it could help

you are right , he could have a different type of orange. I wonder if it would help if the orange was very cold? Is he peeling a lot faster or slower/?the speed could matter too, if you get the title of his video let me know

  • @imstillworkin

I'm guessing it wouldn't because the blade is kind of small, about the size of a kernel of corn. I show a couple of ways I cut corn off the cob in my video "Canning Corn and Corn Cob Jelly".

This would be great for making marmalade, take off a very thin layer for chopping into the marmalade, take another pass to remove the bitter pith. I think you could set up the apple peeler machines to do this too. Just swing the corer out of the way and adjust the cutter to very thin.

I don't know, I'm thinking my .25 plastic tupperware citrus peeler is still working great. Tip for those who don't know the pith is very important to have on the citrus if you are juicing in a juicer.

Its meant for peeling the rind only not to actually peel the orange , the purpose is to use the rind for making essence .

If you score the fruit deep enough with the tupperware peeler the pith should come right off with the peel.
