Yes!!!!! Year of the Overlap in full swing!!! Hitting 90, you flippin stud. Rec league superstar in the making. Dude, great swings. Stick with it. With those Popeye forearms you have, you can overlap any bat.
Ive switched over to an overlap grip in my last 2 to 3 BPs and I have actually been enjoying it as well. Some guys are like “man it looks like you’re barely swinging and that ball is flying”. I feel like even when I miss that backspin helps carry that ball! Great explanation man!
Finally the breakdown of this!!! I love it. Alot of people just say it's better, more power, etc. You broke it down for us all to take our time to understand. I will be sending off an email later this week with my specs and bats I am using. Currently with my probably whack swing I would love any feed back and willing to send vids if your willing. If not totally understand. Cannot thank you enough. And thank you for the new hat.
great video buddy! I've been working on an overlap grip for the past few months, it is definitely a journey! Now Aaron is working on it because he saw how much more whip it has added to my swing. Keep it up man, can't wait to watch the process!
When I first got to monsta I knew nothing of the overlap. When I started to get involved in testing bats, Dacko taught me to utilize it in order to get top results during those tests. It definitely takes a minute to get comfortable and make adjustments but in the end it added 2-4 mph to my exit velo.
Yeah, I've migrated to the overlap grip over the last few years. It was discouraging at first because I felt like I lost all of my control, but my bat head whip and ability to cut has increased dramatically. Keep going brother. I actually started overlap after watching Bat Hound.
I use the overlap grip myself. Watched a few videos myself and now I can’t switch back. Defiantly helps with whip through the zone. I drop one finger below the knob.
I have used this grip for years and yes it takes a little time to get use to. It does exit velocity and gives you more whip thru the zone. When you get the bottom half of your body into the mix, it’s an incredible swing.
I’ve been using overlap for years and usually will go with the full overlap as you’ve shown. Sometimes I will do a variation and put top hand 2 fingers on the handle. I also use a grip n rip taper. Feels it helps me grip the bat although does add some to the handle weight. Keep workin it my friend!
Thanks for the video, good work. I went to an overlap golf club style grip a few years ago (interlock pinky on upper hand w/ index of bottom hand). Takes some getting use to for sure. You will get more comfortable with it the more you use it. The snap is so much greater with the overlap. Hope you recover on the knee soon.
I drop a pinky below the knob, and I interlock my top hand pinky with my bottom hand pointer finger. It increases the lever, but still provides a level of top hand control.
I did some testing with my self. The overlap grip helped me keep the barrel back and allows for more extension. I drop my pinky off and straight over lap. Just like you I increase distance and exit velocity. It takes some time to get used to. When I do the baseball grip I don’t get extended and I’m not keeping the barrel back when I swing. Good luck and trust the process. Once you get comfortable with it you won’t wanna go back.
I switched to that grip after my teammate had me to try it. My home run output instantly went up, my power went up. Started hitting the ball a lot harder.
I went from about 5-10 homeruns a season to about. 30-40 After I got everything dialed in. Took me about a season. And a lot of off the field hitting practice.
I learned from the bat hound and never went back to a normal grip. For me I felt like I’ve hit the ball harder and further compare to the standard grip… just my take … hopefully it works out for you.
I have been using the overlap grip for the last 20 years. It does give you more bat whip and extension. Some say you lose a little bat control, but I can still place the ball when needed. I would go along with what Josh says and stick with it. I have never looked back and became a HR hitter once I started perfecting the overlap grip.
@@jmoak311 yeah it’s not something you can do overnight. Use a weighted bat while trying to convert. Build up some strength in your overlap grip swing. It really helps
@@FatGuyBP3rd game last night using the overlap grip and hit 3 of the hardest balls all season. I made a slight switch and went with a three finger overlap and squeezed my index finger and thumb and that worked better for me.
The 2 main issues I personally have with the overlap grip are bat control and comfort level around top hand thumb and pointer finger (rounded area). Maybe like you said it’s a process and just takes getting used to. I feel like the bat is going to fly right out of my hands on a hard swing.
Been hitting overlap for 25+ years. Line up your knuckles then drop down to overlap. It’ll bring your elbows together and will snap your hands over harder through the ball. Throw your elbows into the ball path. - to also increase leverage when you overlap interlock your index fingers ( Carl rose technique) that’s how I swing it too. - also hit off the tee more while you’re getting used to it.
Ok, but what about that balanced Wig Popper??? I want to pre-order one but need to know if they still have pop like the red. It’s my gamer but the end load can get heavy after several games
I have a love/hate relationship with the overlap grip. It absolutely works in terms of increasing batted ball speed and distance, but the loss of bat control is staggering. I find what with an overlap grip that whatever problems my swing has are exacerbated. It's easy to have bad timing, miss the barrel, or top the ball. With the overlap grip your bottom hand can't be sloppy. You want a fairly firm grip on the bat, but not white-knuckling it. Anyone with a half decent swing will notice distance gains with the overlap grip immediately. If you're someone who's stuck at the warning track it will result in balls starting to leave the yard. Furthermore it seems like the overlap grip takes less effort. You'll feel like you're whipping the ball rather than trying to bludgeon it (as with a standard grip). I don't use the overlap grip full time. If I want base hitting precision I'll generally stick with a standard grip or 2 finger overlap. The full overlap is better for HR situations when bat control isn't super necessary and max distance is needed. For someone wanting to learn the overlap grip I'd recommend taking an entire offseason worth of BP. Start with a tee and then move to live pitching. It's a long process, and there will be times when things don't feel right and you want to go back to your old grip. Overall the overlap grip is worth it, but no one should think it's super easy to learn. You basically have to relearn how to swing a bat without a top hand generating snap.
Yeah i was curious how you felt about your bat control when you switched to over lap grip. I did it a couple times in BP and felt like I couldn’t control the bat as well. I hit a lot of singles and doubles bc I spray the ball all over the field. My last tournament I went 17 for 18 on the day but like 14 singles and then put myself at risk for the force out at 2nd. I would like to add a few more feet or mph on exit velo to get more doubles or triples but don’t want to sacrifice control.
I find with the full overlap grip I have more power but less control. I use 2 finger overlap for better bat control. When I started, I used to swing conventional 1st rd, 1 or 2 finger overlap 2nd, and 3rd round full overlap. I started doing this in my mid to upper 50's as I thought I was losing some bat speed. At 70 I usually go with the 2 finger ol and I drop my pinky, but will use the full ol when situation call for the ball to be driven. Demarini chute trainer and Macenko bat speed drill also help and I use a soft toss machine
Ive tried it and got discouraged to and went back to interlocking my pinky and index finger. Seeing this, I guess I will go back and try it again myself.

Fat Guy BP i do the Ryan Harvey grip 2 fingers off the bottom 2 on the top and it took me well over 1k swings to get use to it. Now i pick up my sons baseball bat and im overlapping and have to correct myself. I also can do the grip your doing but i feel i dont control the bat but yes i do get prolly 5-10mph on my exit velo then a traditional baseball grip. To me it seems the grip fits slowpitch having to generate your own power. Takes alot of work though. I also have had carpel tunnel surgery on my left hand because of numbness and trust me i feel it sometimes. Make sure you keep knocker Knuckles lined up even with overlap grip it helps with the wrist break and not rolling over like you was doing.
I tried it a while last year . . did a bunch of BP and a couple of tournaments . . . hit for good average but not for power . . . changed back to a hybrid (one righthand pinkie overlap and started hitting more HRs again . . . maybe I didn't give it enough time . . . . like Adam said he got worse after a while.
You may have just found what works for you! For me, once I figured out the full overlap and dropped the pinky off the knob, it was a game changer. But I know a couple really great hitters that prefer a grip similar to yours: pinky on the knob + overlap just the pinky on top. A little extra whip and looseness, but with lots of control.
I have the same grip I drop the pinky ring finger is on the knob two fingers on the hand it’s the advanced grip it’s the same grip that Danny Crine grip and I’m finding it more bat speed and more bat head drag and swing harder threw the hitting zone. It will take time for you to get used to the grip for sure
I have to correct one thing you said. You said at the beginning of the video that when you go to an overlap grip it gives you more whip and makes the bat longer. I agree with the whip part but without dropping a pinky off the end then you add more length to the bat. If you don't drop the pinky you have the same fixed point at the handle end as your regular grip if that makes sense.
I over lap with my pinkie is off the bat if your starting start over laps 1 finger at a time. Also get a good pair of gloves especially for the hand that covers the butt of the bat it'll start bruising your plum.Thank me later. Also I've been over lapping for over 20 years. Oh don't give up on it . Great video
I drop a pinky off the bottom and overlap 3 fingers and hold on with the index finger on the top hand.Concentrate on driving the knob and keeping the bathead back.Watch the whip in your swing then...
you can try some different things, Try 2 fingers on grip on top hand and try 1 finger on, To me my bat speed feel faster with 2 fingers on but the longest balls i have hit were with 1 fingure on.
Good tips, I started with 2 fingers, then 1 and finally after couple seasons went to full overlap. I try and go Oppo a lot and I find it helps with that as well.
Keep your top hand elbow down on your side. This puts you in the slot sooner. Your elbow is lifting, then back down. Instead of that work on Lagging the Bat back away from where you want to hit the ball. If you do that, you can hit it hard to all fields.
A friend that plays upper ball showed me this once I was playing for about 6 months. That was 8 years ago once I started the overlap grip I instantly had higher velo and went from barely hitting it 300ft to having hrs measured at 500 ft . But avg around 380 ft and my avg exit velo now is around 102. And hit as high as 119. It's definitely a gamechanger and does take a little time to get used to . And I only drop a pinky and over lap 2 fingers . Still have good control and even mis hits are mid 90s ev .
Im actually going back to more of a full grip. I dropped pinkys for years but i think with age im not as consistent as i once was. Going full grip but staying nice and loose is really bring back the line drive homeruns. To each their own though whatever feels good for you.
Unless you're dropping 1 or 2 fingers underneath the knob of the bat you haven't really given yourself the full whip of the bat, like a true over lap grip is intended to do. All you have done is modified your baseball grip. Start by dropping one finger and as you get better more confident then try two. I have two fingers pinky and ring finger underneath the knob.
