Americans Moving to Portugal 🇵🇹 Step-By-Step Process (2020) | Expats Everywhere

  • Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere have been stuck in The United States due to Covid-19 and the travel bans. Things are easing up and they are finally able work on their documents to move to Portugal. They vlog along the way to share their journey with everyone to see how it's done.
    In this vlog, they are on their daily walk (well, try to be daily walk if the weather allows) and discuss what they have been doing. They didn't need to drive all around town this time because so much was done online. They had to get medical insurance where they compared Insured Nomads and Cigna. They talk about how much money they have to spend on that and when it needs to start for them to get their visas. They also breakdown booking flights and how cheap flights are right now, especially with them being flexible on days and locations. Watch to see how much they ended up spending! Lastly, they touch on things to come, like trying to find accommodations in Portugal and how they are doing that, plus more things on their long checklist. Join the journey with them to see how the move goes and what all you will need if you are considering a move to Portugal!
    We're building out a playlist for this "Moving to Portugal" journey. You can check out more episodes here: • 3 Month Journey to Por...
    Stay tuned to see them check things off the rest of their checklist and see if they make it to Portugal in October as they have planned!

    Just started viewing and am planning a move to Portugal. I am a US citizen and have had to cancel a trip both in March and July. Everyone who wants to move there seems a bit confused on all the things needed to be done and especially the timing of these. I am very interested in your journey. But I have a question not only you but another couple from the US is planning a trip in October. I am under the impression the the EU has closed the borders to US citizens. TAP airline canceled my tickets in July for that reason. Do you have dual citizenship?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for joining in, Scott. According to the most updated information, people with legal right to be in Portugal will be allowed in. So, yes, EU was not accepting tourist back then, which is probably why TAP canceled your ticket. Something we're currently clarifying is the COVID testing requirements because we're not flying TAP but we're flying Air France and they don't seem to have any pre-flight requirements unlike TAP. We are not dual citizens, but we will be traveling there with a long-term residence visa assuming that gets approved.- Josh & Kalie

    Are you saying that you need to have 6 months of housing paid ahead of arrival, as part of the visa application or would a lease agreement with first and last month deposit suffice?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  2 роки тому

      Hi Mindy, you don't need your housing paid for in full but you do need a housing contract, which in general you'll need to put down deposits to get that contract. Does that help? Some things have changed since this vlog was produced. The big processes are the same but details can be different. • @ExpatsEverywhere

      Hey, Catt's Corner! First off, we'd like to say that you're not alone so don't worry. Second, thank you for watching, commenting, and thanking us. :-)
      We talk about this in a later video. In the end, we found out directly from the Embassy contact that we did not need to buy a round-trip ticket, however, Kalie wanted to come back to the States in hopes of seeing that concert (cue Josh's eye roll). We're not sure why it was a thing on the requirements list but we made it clear to them that we wanted to find that out because it made no sense and we + our audience wanted to know.

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 роки тому

      The Ministry of Foreign affairs states “valid travel insurance, allowing medical coverage, including medical emergencies and repatriation.” We used Insured Nomads for it and we have a robust international plan that would cover us while traveling. It takes some time to get into the system in Portugal. You won’t just land here and be eligible to apply for their healthcare coverage so we weighed that up. You can talk to Insured Nomads about it though and they can find a plan that’s right for you. We’ll get you a link that you can use. If anything, just start the conversation with them to see what your options are to find something that fits you and your needs. That’s what we did and we went with proper international health insurance. We have been planning our move to Portugalfor over two years, and are delayed primarily due to the ban on US citizens traveling to the EU. I see you have been working through the processes, though... how are you able to set travel plans without having the ability to know you can travel on specific dates, even with a D7?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  4 роки тому

      Good question. Americans with valid visas are allowed to travel to the EU. We will not be traveling there as tourists, which are currently banned, but we will be traveling as people legally allowed to live/be in the country. Also, it's our understand that Americans that are residence of countries not banned from entry into the EU are still allowed to travel. Our recommendation is to check with VFS Global about your eligibility for whatever visa your attempting to get to move to Portugal. Thanks for the question and following our journey. We still haven’t moved yet but our flight is next week. We’re going to be in Porto. Our apartment is €900/month. We could have gotten something cheaper but we feel comfortable with that price. Regarding a drop, we’ve actually seen a few properties that we had been tracking go up! Not sure why because if it didn’t rent at €850 why is it going to rent at €950? But hey, that could be an inventory thing. We’ve had several locals write that they’ve noticed an influx of people moving to Lisbon and Porto.

    Hi, Paula here. We just found your channel and love it. My wife and I have been planning a move to Porto for almost three years. We’re mostly waiting for my wife to be vested in her pension. I’ll move into semi-retirement and continue working remotely part time.
    We first visited Portugal three years ago and took two weeks exploring various cities we might want to live in. We’re from Texas (Austin) and our impression was Lisbon had a Dallas vibe and Porto had an Austin vibe. We also considered Coimbra and Aveiro but absolutely fell in love with Porto.
    I have a question about insurance. My understanding is once we get through SEP and have our residency cards then we can access the same National healthcare in Portugal as citizens. Is this correct? So we only need insurance to cover us through getting past SEP. Is that right?

    Can you make it in Portugal if you only speak English?

      By in large, yes. The Portuguese have high levels of English fluency although we do recommend learning the language when you get here. - Josh & Kalie

    I now live in San Franciso and am planning to buy a place in property for my retirement. I do love the look of Porto and being alone, I would like to ask which part of the city would you recommend that is safe and has easy access to transportation and necessary amenities like groceries or medical facilities. I love my place now because even though I am in the city, I am a but far from the hubbub and can walk or ride the bus to wherever I would like to go. Thanks!

      Great question! We would avoid Ribeira & Sé and a pocket of housing between Plaça Republica and the university. Bonfim has a lower pace of life out of the hubbub as you put it 😁 and certain part of Boavista are quite nice and will have more amenities than Boavista. Up further north near Hospital Sao Joao could be a great option too as there's a little more space, good medical facilities, and a direct line to the city center. - Josh & Kalie

      @@bencruzsf you’re welcome. We’re into real estate and are going to be doing a series called Property Hunt Portugal where we take a look at different properties. We have one episode so far and another one shot that’s about rentals that we’re editing now. There are a lot of restrictions right now with this stay at home order so it’ll take us until after that finishes to shoot more. Let us know what you think of that episode. 🙏 Stay safe and have a good week. - Josh & Kalie

      @@ExpatsEverywhere Oh that would be very helpful! Can you give me some tips about Lisbon areas also? A friend told me that Porto is very pretty but really small while Lisbon is a bit more cosmopolitan and diverse.

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 роки тому

      @@bencruzsf We're not as familiar with the granular side of Lisbon so we'd rather not comment. What we can say is that the size of Porto is all relative to what you want out of the city and what you're used to. Kalie and I love how walkable it is and we walk with Valencia pretty much everywhere, which gives us a chance to see the city at a slower pace. During normal times, there's plenty to do, but Porto doesn't get the international musical acts like Lisbon. One thing that's under-rated that you've heard us talk about is how nice Porto people are compared to Lisbon people. Another things to consider is the cost of living is higher in Lisbon, but if you've got the $$ then that's not as much of a factor. Connectivity, Porto has an international airport that's well connected and easy to access. Lisbon has better connection to the US for direct flights, but beyond that, we'd rate them almost the same. - Josh & Kalie
