- COOL JAZZ EXERCISE: lick on II-Vs through the cycle of 5ths (4ths).A bebop type lick that develops facility for improvisation in all keys. Good for all instruments- for ear training and interval knowledge. For pianists it develops left hand techniques in shell voicings and rootless voicings through the cycle. This exercise is best learned by ear, but a score will be available to start with on website. Go to website for lessons in Left hand voicings using the author's book: Jazz Piano: Methods and Songbook for professional playing. www.kenthewitt...
Credit given to saxophonist Kirk Feather for inventing and passing on this lick for analysis.
Thanx, Kent. Sooo glad I'm part of your crew of cool cats and kitties. You are a true Jazz Elder making an extremely imp contribution. Thanx for inspiring us w your wisdom. Keep on keeping on. You're pushing the tradition forward:your own personal growth in your own skills and planting seeds of your passion, standard, and gifts to others. OUTSTANDING, JAZZBROTHER!!! I can D. I. G. I. T!!!! Go,Cat,Go!😎👍😎
I second this. Well said Brenda.
Wow...such a great comment and so encouraging! I might have to pin this to the top. Brenda, you are a very groovy chick....I dig your enthusiasm and perception. Thanks so much and keep swingin!
Thank you for increasing my jazz vocabulary. I was playing ii-V7 using just dorian and mixolydian modes, but that flat 9 ads a nice touch.
Hi Kent, so glad you had the courage to give up banking for piano and jazz! We don’t need more bankers, but guys like you are a rare find.
Very inspirational exercise which motivates me to work on the full cycle again. THANKS!
Great comment, Baldo, you're the best. You give me motivation! Thanks!
You DID NOT waste your time with this - it’s great stuff!! Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise. Keep teachin’ the ear and the soul.
Great comment...thanks so muich!
The most inspiring man on youtube. Thank you for leading me down the right paths.
My pleasure! I appreciate your telling me!
This man has immaculate vibes, brings a smile to my face whenever i watch his videos. Thanks for helping jazz musicians all around the world!
Great comment and affirmation...thanks so much!
I am thankful for your tip, “you wanna do this by ear”. By following this tip and concentrating with my ears, I found I could go around the circle with ease, Thank you for inspiration!
Excellent! Thanks for telling me You have a special talent!
Kent. Your videos are a Huge inspiration and help to me. I imagine that the great majority or your viewers are pianists, but not all. I don't play piano at all, but rather strings (guitar, banjo, pedal steel) and the presentations you give relative to theory are HUGELY TRANSFERABLE. I get a ton out of watching these. A lot has to do with your lucid teaching skills and enthusiasm. You playing and musical ideas are brilliant as well, but you are SO GOOD at presenting what's going on under the hood. Even the Altered Dominant Ego has something to share now and then, but you need to let him out into the sunlight a little more often. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos! I know a lot of your time goes into these, but they are well appreciated.
Thanks, Mark, your words are a wonderful compliment. I'm glad my tutorials can be helpful to other musicians than pianists...that's very rewarding and encouraging to me. Best always, KH
Merci Kent!
I'm a French lady and a life long piano student ! I have just discovered your jazz lessons . Of course it's not easy to get all the details right in English but music being an international language I am able to appreciate the quality of your teaching as well as your amazing understanding. I have put this precise cool jazz lick into practice. Wow, not easy but extremely rewarding. Will follow your precious advice. Et merci infiniment !!!!
I apprecaite the comment very much...I'm glad to help out. God bless!
You didn’t waste your time... you actually helped me a lot. Thank you
Thanks for telling me....very helpful!
I first discovered your youtube channel four years ago and immediately bought your book which I love. Then my keyboard broke and I stopped playing piano for years. I finally got a new keyboard last week and am so delighted to see that you're still making excellent videos. Your channel is such an amazing resource and I feel like buying your book doesn't compensate for all the free material you put out there. Thank you so much Kent and keep it up!
Thanks so much, Stephen. That means so much to me because as you have stated... these videos and this information is free...so buying my book, helps me greatly to keep going. My book is my main source of income. so I really appreciate your comment.
There isn't a single video of yours that doesn't blow my mind. This exercise simple but still challenging and it sticks, and that's exactly how things are best taught. Thank you so much.
Great comment...thanks for the affirmation!
To be perfectly honest, you're one of the best piano teachers on UA-cam and there are plenty. Your videos are always informative and I'm still working my way through your earlier offerings.
It could be that I'm the oldest and had more experience. Plus I had to work my way through a business career, and bank jobs....and had to find music and it's meaning. It's part of the passion I have for it. Thanks for the affirmation, DJ!
I have waited all these years to dedicate a plan to playing jazz. I’m retired and now I can study and have a plan to get better on the piano. I find your lessons the best ones on the Internet today. Thank you for your incredible ability to explain this wonderful genre and play it so masterfully.
That's a wonderful comment, and I'm so grateful to you, Aqua Angie. Write to me, and keep swinging!
Somebody wrote about the right path. I Couldn't agree more. Kent always sends me in the right path. For years I'd go back to My John mehegan books for ideas and refreshing tecs. Now I just go to a Kent video. As soon as I get my printer going I'm definitely getting a copy of Kent's book ( my new go to book ) . Thank Kent as usual awesome video.
Thank you, Jose. Thanks a wonderful affirmation for me...because I know John Mehegan, I had a lesson w/ him and I have his books.
I like this exercise it makes me feel like a great jazz pianist already, and sometimes i lough at myself as a saxophonist playing like a professional jazz pianist. Man, you are a great teacher and keep on sharing, you are a great inspiration.Thanks.
Thanks again for another great comment!
Among the many precious tutorials of KH, this is one of the most charming.
I wonder why...is it the Bernstein quotes? I'll do more of that, I hope. We inspire each other.
It is both: the quotes, your personal message and the lick. It will to apply this on songs like „Afternoon in Paris“, „Tune Up“ or „How high the Moon“.
Thanks, Kent. As always, I really enjoyed this video. Especially right now with no pressure on to prepare for any gigs I find your exercises and insights an inspiration to keep going at the keyboard when there is no reward other than improving. Whenever there is a pause between your offerings I find myself hoping that you are OK and that the pause is only because you are preparing more insightful topics and inspirational quotations.
Oh, thanks for writing this. I always think I'm behind....I had so many comments on this video in one day I was 90 comments behind. I'm always thinking ..."what next?" Anyway, it feels good to try to catch up and thanks for the great comment!

🌹Можно только позавидовать молодым начинающим пианистам, что у них есть такая прекрасная возможность учиться грамотно и правильно играть, Спасибо Маэстро за видео урок.🌹🌹🌹👍👍👍
Thanks Kent...best way to start a Saturday morning one of your videos and a coffee.
That's so cool, my hip friend!
I can definitely use this! I spend a lot of time running 2-5-1's in all keys, but now I'll have a lick to work on with my right hand while doing 2-5's with my left. I've learned a lot from you and from Oliver, over on the New Jazz channel. The stuff I play is starting to sound more like music and less like fumbling for notes! I've spent my life as a drummer, had to put down music in my 30's to raise kids, and now am reinventing myself in my 50's as a pianist. Thanks!
Reinventing yourself is an honorable task. Your drumming experience should be helpful, because so much of learning to play piano well is the rhymn. Thanks!
I cannot tell you how much I needed to hear this today. Thank you for the inspiration.
Your comment means so much to me...it helps me to keep going .!
Whenever I need inspiration to try something new, I turn to your site. Working on incorporating these licks into my tunes. Thank you, Sir!
Thanks so much for telling me!
Glad that you got tis lick from a saxophonist friend, as a saxophonist myself I've tried it and it's so very cool. But, I'm still struggling with right hand fingering on piano, not only that also the shells on my left hand. Also with time I'll be able to catch up as I'm always following your youtube videos. You are doing us non-pianist a great favour because we are told to really improve on our horns we need to learn piano. Thank you so much, Kent.
Thanks for the comment, Andile.. Please watch my latest video on fingering a be bop tune. It should help you, I hope, with getting better at fingering knowledge in general.
A huge "Thanks" from Istanbul!
Wow...Istanbul....that's a place with a huge history...what's it like there today?
My teacher taught me the rootless voicings straight away. 2-5-1 progression. All 12 keys. Very powerful tool.
Absolutely...if you are going to understand modern jazz harmony, even if pianists like Bill Evans changed everything back in the 60's.
Kent, your videos have always been great and helped me develop as a jazz pianist (I'm classically trained originally, and studied music at university).
But this one in particular was really inspiring and motivating, with what you said at the start. Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart (I bought your book last year!) I hope, too, to one day escape my current job and career and pursue something more meaningful in teaching (music). Take care. Pete
Thanks so much for sharing your self- realization with the world. I'm glad I could pass on the wisdom of LB. but also give you an exercise that has practical meaning. You affirm me, and that's so important.... a million thanks!
Brilliant once again! Thank you so much, Kent. Finding these videos very helpful. Drills and exercises are so necessary but can be so dull. This is fun!
That is so cool...I think it's fun so I'm glad you do to. It's had a good response (for little me) but the comments have been great, including yours. Blessing, brother.
Cannot tell you how much I enjoy your content!
That's great to hear, thanks for telling me!
I dont know if this is right, but i began breaking the phrase into smaller units say in C minor, like D-F-Eb-B-D, or D-B-C, D-F-Eb, D-F-Eb-D-B-C. I got really excited over this lick. Thank you so much. So "Please Sir can I have some more." I am grateful for any morsel you share with us.
Thanks for the request, and of course you can break it down to a simpler lick using chord tones and passing tones. The important thing is to learn to improvise in all 12 keys.
that's a beautiful lick! sounds very pure and not show offy, really highights the chord very clearly without sounding like an arpeggio
Very hip comment. I learned it from a friend and then passed it on. We all help each other. Pass on the love, I say.
I feel the same way about Lennie, very much. The depth and breadth of his musicianship are breathtaking. And when he talks and teaches, the love and feeling just ooze out of him, which just adds to the effect. This quality seems to serve him well at the podium in rehearsals -- there's a decent amount of footage right here on YT.
Yes, he's perhaps the most amazing and extraordinary musician of all time, in so many ways. I put him on the highest pedestal of all artists....and when you read or study his history...you will understand.
Please write to me for more info.
Sometimes I feel like an old tom cat, but when I can finally do the things you show us , I feel really cool. Thanks.🐱
I'm so glad!
I absolutely loved this! I'm pretty new at learning jazz. It will be 3 years this December that I've been learning the piano. I've always loved and been fascinated with jazz and being able to sing along. So thank you! I look forward to more videos like this.
Thanks for writing and telling me your story. Please go to my playlists and find what is most helpful to you. Start with the beginner jazz series. Let me know!

Kent - so many thanks. I'm working on your stride exercises and am getting a start on the II - V's. Such great stuff. You are definitely NOT wasting your time and you are making life more meaningful and positive for a lot of people, particularly during this time of Covid. Muy Grateful!
Wonderful...thank you George...this mean the world to me!!
Thanks Kent you are great piano jazz teacher.
Cool little warmup thing...thanks Kent!
Glad you enjoyed it
Simply best teacher there is
Thanks so much!
Thank you, Mr. Hewitt! Such a great drill. I’ve been working this exercise the last couple days, and it’s really helped a lot. The nice melody line helps to keep it engaging through all the keys (as opposed to scales). Keep up the great work! You’re the man.
Wonderful!
You are terrific Kent! You make the lock-downs worth it! Very much appreciated!
Best comment of the day...that's so good to hear...thanks!
Another great lesson Kent! Thanks for showing this to me. Seems surreal that I’m seeing you perform live in 30 min…if anyone reads this comment some of the best money you’ll ever spend are lessons from Kent at Summerkeys in Lubec, Maine.
Thanks, Rick...you are the best....great guy and awesome student!
Kent this is absolutely sensational, please keep them coming. By far the best jazz videos on the whole internet
PS if you could do any videos about any Brubeck originals that would be great
Thanks for the affirmation. I'll keep your request in mind.
I’m writing!!!!! FGS!!! Great stuff. Love rootless voicings and love the new lick. Thank you so much! Great exercise.
Thanks for comment, Bruce. Swing loose!
Great lick! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming. Godspeed Kent!
Thanks Julian...I need God's help and yours!

Kent is the man.
Thanks for the affirmation!
you're a great musician and teacher Kent. thank you for all your videos from a banker from Italy
We love Italy...we were planning to come there this month...but too bad. See you next year, we hope.
Thank you Sir you are inspiration for many. I am also thinking of music I play violin. Using your lessons and the music sheet above your piano in the video . every day there is something new to learn music is medicine for the mind . I am your student. I like your style of presentation for its unique qualities.
Great to hear from you, and such a kind statement. Violin is so challenging, I can't imagine. But I respect you deeply. Thanks you for your support.
Thanks for imparting this useful and practical exercise on us!!
My pleasure!
Hi Kent,
Thanks for your video. It helped me a lot to work in all keys.
It is alway a pleasure to watch your videos.

BIG THANKS ONE MORE TIME Dear Mr Kent Hewitt !BEAUTYFULL ending greate pianist !
Thanks so much for writing and sharing your thoughts....with your comment. i have the encouragement to keep going. God bless!
YEAH!!! Modulate forever!! ♩♪♪♫♭♬♡♡♡ Endless love!! ♡♡♡
Marilyn, isn't it amazing? ... the magic that music can make....just a simple exercise can become complex and take you on a journey into la la land. Thanks!
I agree. A love supreme, indeed.
Kent, great tutorial and exercise. I’ve been incorporating the cycle of 4ths/5ths in my daily practicing, from a chord perspective, but this is a great idea and I’ll definitely be adding this to my practice routine. This has so many possibilities in extending this to other licks and chord progressions (not just I-V) and should form a foundation for improvisation. This is not a waste of your time; keep ‘em coming!
Hi Tim. I'm glad you see further possibilities with this exercise. You can vary the rhythm of the notes but keep the same target tones or vary them. Swing on, brother!
Great exercise. This one is outside my comfort zone but (barely) within my ability. I'm fine in C and F, then I have to start thinking really hard. So i'm start out by playing the 2-b3 in the ii chord, and the b5 in the V chord. Go through all 12 keys. Then start adding one more note at a time.
That's a good approach. I realize this is a more advanced exercise...but it might be useful for all levels if you can simplify the melodic line.. Good job!
Another great lesson Kent. This is a fun little lick. I am going to practice this.
Thanks and good luck!
Thanks Kent, you’re doing wonders for my practicing and progression.
🙏
Thanks for telling me. Keep it up
Thanks again Kent. I was just looking for stuff like this to get my left hand moving using chords instead of playing a baseline (although that's also good practice, like playing two separate melodies, hand independance etc.). But for chords my left hand could do with some practice. Learning to play has been mostly DIY for me. So people like you and some other youtubers have been my guidebook so to speak.
Thanks so much for writing, Claude. Yes. you want to learn left hand voicings in a combinations of ways. So go to my playlists on my channel page for help with that.
The best, the most useful exercise for me
Thanks for telling me!
Thanks Kent, awesome exercise!
Very welcome...Thank you!
Ooh I’m definitely going to try that, thank you for showing us!
You are so welcome!
I could enjoy just listening to this exercise, but I'm about to start playing it.
I hope it works out for you.
Great Kent. I loved this lesson...deep on so many levels. So helpful!
Thanks so much for telling me!
Great exercise, and explained clear and slow.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful wisdom of music! Great stuff, challenging but excellent content! Swing’ loose! ✌🏼❤️🎶😉
Thanks for telling me...keeps me going!
Great exercise. Thanx for the inspiration!
You're so welcome!
beautiful introduction I'm glad I found you
Thank you kindly!
So cool Kent, and very practical.
Love this comment...right on! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this Kent! Always enjoy your tutorials.
Lucian
Thanks for telling me!
Thanks so much for this little gem of an exercise. It works quite nicely on guitar, also! Really enjoyed the improv at the end. I heard one lick that was stolen from "Stolen Moments"! Nice! I have a set of daily drills I do on the keyboard every day, and this is exercise is the latest addition to the list. You have shared knowledge and inspiration for years now, and the jazz piano community is lucky to have you!
Thanks so much, David. I enjoy hearing from guitar players. I have played in guitar and piano duo gigs for years, so there's much simpatico there. . Keep swingin" !
Hi Kent
I feel that I’ve known you for years. You are a great teacher. Love the book, keep the video’s coming.
Regards
David, England
That's such a nice comment, David, and very encouraging and helpful to me.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Hope all is well with you.
All good
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. You are a true inspiration ❤ ❤ loved the video. Loved the exercise.
You are so welcome!
Excellent explanation, Kent.
Glad you liked it
Brilliant improvisation here!
Joe, brother, your comments always stand out....then I look and it's from you!
Sadly I won't have access to a keyboard until tomorrow night, but damn... this looks like fun! A fun _challenge_ I should say... I suspect I'll be coming back to this and learning ever more from it for many years. Thank you, good sir!
It will keep you busy. And when you learn the swing part and invent your own interpretation, now you are expanding your skills through creativity. Let me know.
Another great video, with theory/scale combos I prefer to scale drills. Packs more info punch for my allotted time. I'm retired, so that's a HUGE consideration!! Keep them coming. (Love your book, BTW, and keep it always within reach of the keyboard.).
Thanks so much, David. for buying my book and for your comment and support. Keep swingin'!
Great lick, Kent! And a great exercise in which to play it. I figured out a way to apply it in my solo of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE in the Em A7 | Ab∆7 section near the beginning of the tune. With a little changing around, it really sings! Thanks so much for the inspiration.
This is just an exercise, but if you can use the lick in a song and then build ideas from it, then you see how effective and practical it is to practice it.
Great advices, and fantastic exercise! I will for sure try it out. Thanks! Greatings from Sweden. /Jonas
I hope I can visit Sweden some day. A singer I work with and a good friend has family there. Thanks for the support.
A day without music just plain sucks. Years ago I got into listening to all the talk radio crap and after awhile I reallized the negative effect it was having on me. A couple years ago I switched back to listening to music instead of talk radio, stopped watching TV as much especially news and listening to more music. My life is so much more enjoyable now.
To keep up with what going on in the world I scan and read a number of news sites, pick what I think is worth digging into and make my own mind up on things. I also limit how much time I will spend news and I give myself unlimited time for doing creative things like listening, playing, and studying music and the arts.
Sounds like you found the right balance for you. I hardly ever watch the news, but my girlfriends keeps me informed. Music is always a healing force. Thanks for sharing you're experience... and stay well. brother!
You mean people actually go a day without music? Very sad...
That’s terrific. Thank you. ‘Can’t wait to go to work.
Have fun!
Wow, this is the best sounding exercise I have ever heard. I’ll definitely give it a try.Thank you!
Wow!! Great comment...thanks!
Keep them coming Kent!
Thanks for the encouragement....definitely needed now.
This is wonderful music. Whoever I do not understand your fingerings. I’m going to teach this exercise to my students I want to know your opinion about fingering of that exercise. It is matters or it doesn’t matter. The question is correct because you’re using not conventional fingers and I wonder it’s down for a purpose for a better sound or is not.I will greatly appreciate your answer it’s very important for me to know. Benjamin Pearlman.
Thanks for writing to me at my email...for more answers to specific questions.
Always enjoying your content, your personality and your playing! Thank you!!
Great comment....thanks so much for your generosity!
Liked. Agree cool. I play guitar and when I got to Bbm to Eb the voicings werent sounding close enough together but after playing the melody it really sorted out. So what Im saying is Im not ready to be able to just play the chords before reading how the melody goes. I was analyzing a pop tune hotel california because I started an exercise with just broken 3 note chords that span well up or down and a perfect voicing on the guitar I realized was used for that tune and this reminds me of that in that instead of 2 5s its something like 5th or 4th up and then a sixth alternating.
I can't speak for that...but if you practice this exercise...I think over time you will develop skill and your ears will grow to understand how music and improvisations works in a very natural way. God bless.
Well done, an excercise that. takes. Piano Playing on a musical journey. Thank you a thousand times. This Cat, out.
Cool cat....thanks for taking the time to watch and write to me....you're in the elite club now!
I hear it, but my fingers don't play it ! After a week = C - eyes closed, F - a breeze, Bb - brain strain, Eb - stuttering, Ab - stop/start, Db = deflated. So next week I'll start from F# treating it as the easy C.
Seriously, this is an addictive way to learn through the keys. Great stuff so brilliantly explained, thanks Kent
Thanks, Stephen, I'm glad you like the exercise. It proves to me that exercises like this are beneficial, and that's why I'm working on a new book of exercises and drills. Hopefully it will be fun and skill -making, and not just boring. .
Excellent tutorial delivered with your usual wit and pizazz! So grateful. One question. When you start freely riffing towards the end, are you still consistently progressing through the circle of fifths?
Absolutely, Otherwise the bass players notes wouldn't be relating....but when improvising there's much more freedom of expression than just using the basic scales.
i love these exercises, thanks alot!
Glad you like them!
Thanks Kent! Great vid and exercise as always!
Glad you enjoyed it
You sir speak from the heart. That message at the beginning of the video was both encouraging and inspiring. Music is definitely not an easy path, but it sure is worth it! The exercise is something I’ll be incorporating into my practice too :) More power to you, good sir! Looking forward to all your future videos
Thanks for the affirmation and encouragement. It means the world to me...God bless!
Thanks, Kent. This was a good one.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great exercise and great jam at the end! 😎
Thanks, Mark, great comment!
