"Nudibranchs in Motion" - Wonderful Diving in Tulamben, Bali Indonesia 2019 (4K-Video)
- Muck diving in Tulamben is famous for its amazing variety of nudibranchs and many other critters. Over 45 different species of nudibranchs appear in this video, some of them still undescribed. We have captured flatworms, head shields and many other tiny critters as well. Spectacular was the early morning dive at the ship wreck of the USAT Liberty with the mighty bumphead parrot fishs and oriental sweetlips.
We stayed one week in April at the wonderful Villa Markisa Dive Resort in Tulamben just in front of the famous Seraya secret dive site, where countless nudibranchs can be sighted. Villa Markisa is well known among nudibranch enthusiasts and the owner is deeply involved in the taxonomy of these fascinating animals.
For animal identification please refer to the video subtitle or to the species list below.

Incredible !
Thank you very much, Sandra and Markus, for this video with outstanding quality, so very interesting and informative content and unforgettable beauty 😍 For me, the "star" of this video was the beautiful green Costasiella koroshimae. You got a new subsciber from Finland.

👍👌VERY BEAUTIFUL 😍👍 I LOVE IT ❤️👍
Thank you very much for your kind comment, apprecitate it very much! Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Wow, wow, wow...!
Great video! Dove all over Indonesia in 2019 for 6 weeks, but didn’t dive while in Bali. Must go back! Great job with identifying these species. Dying to dive again! God bless.
Dear Ornery Oh, thank you very much for your kind comment appreciate it very much! Bali is really a great place for macro and Tulamben for nudibranchs especially. Good luck for your next dives and best regards, Markus
Sandra & Markus Trachsel have you dove in Ambon, Lembeh and/or Komodo National Park? The muck diving in Ambon and Lembeh was incredible. Komodo, a nice mix - the mantas was a bucket list for me. Still takes my breath away. I’m just a GoPro girl (landlocked in Colorado), but am so impressed with the quality of your macro work. If you’re interested, refer to my UA-cam for vids, esp shark diving in Beqa Lagoon, Fiji. 💜 Take care and happy diving!
Dear Ornery Oh, thank you very much! Yes, Lembeh is our favorit place as well, and Ambon was great too. We did the Komodo trip a few years ago, but must say we have to do it again. Before we were on Trip from Flores to Alor, also a great video on our channel and over new year we just came back from Raja Ampat and Misool. I think we only saw mantas there, so many mantas! We will release this video around May. Wow your shark diving video is stunning, congratulations. I gladly subscribed to your channel. Yes, Fiji is definitely on our bucket list too. Thanks alot and best regards, Markus
Sandra & Markus Trachsel Raja was the last stop on our 3 mos trip. We began in Palau, then Truk Lagoon, and Yap. Then Puerta Galera, Philippines, a couple nights in Singapore (wow!) Then we began a 6 week trek in Indonesia; Manado, Bangka, Lembeh, Ambon, Komodo (our 1st livaboard), Bali and then Raja Ampat. We stayed at the Meridian there in Waigeo...beautiful but if I’m ever blessed to go back at some point, I’d like to go by way of livaboard. It’s so vast and so many sites still undiscovered. Minsool’s supposed to be great, as is Triton Bay. Galapagos and Solomon Islands 🇸🇧 are on the ol’ bucket list for sure! Happy chatting with you, and thanks for the follow! More videos to come on my channel as well. Take care!
Sandra & Markus Trachsel oh, we weren’t lucky with the oceanic mantas in Raja..,could see them flopping on the surface from the dive boat, but didn’t see them on our dives. Reef mantas in Komodo. We DID get to hike to the scenic point at Piaynemo...stunning! Similar to the Rock Islands in Palau. I feel very blessed to have the chance to see those parts off the world, and fell in love with the Asian culture and people! Everything in Bali is just beautiful...including the people. So kind! Weaver’s Dive and Travel, Boulder, CO - the BEST at dive travel. We couldn’t have done that trip without them. Forever grateful!
Love your video. The macroshots are amazing. Can you help me how do you get such steady macro shots?
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad to hear that you enjoy watching our videos. If you like nudibranchs and macro in general, then pleaes don't miss our video about Mafia Island in Tanzania. It is a great place for macro diving as well. Regarding your question about filming steady macro videos, well, there is no easy and simple way to get these results. I am getting my 1000 dive soon and I am doing macro photography and videography for over 15 years now. So I assume that this is now paying off slowly. Then of course there is a lot of stabilization work done in post processing of the videos as well. This footage of course is not straight out of the camera, but the steadier the source material the better the result after post processing as well. Also one thing to keep in mind, that I use a very big and heavy camera rig (but which is completely neutrally boyant underwater). The mass of that rig helps a lot to keep it stable and steady. So for me all these factors combined gives the results we show here. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel thank you for your reply. I will surely watch the video of Mafia Island!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
14:14 this one look like a collectible
How do you know all of this fish and animals names
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! It's 15 years of nudibranch experience, lot's of books and contact to experts in case we encounter a species that we have never seen before. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
seen some underwater footages and yours is one of the clearest, greatest quality..i can't get enough of the beauty of those lil creatures!!thanks for taking us to a wonderfully majestic place and sharing your expertise..be safe and well..💞
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad you enjoy watching our video. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Awesome video! Love your style! Epecially the fish ID is very cool. Subscribed and looking forward to you next critter videos! Keep up the good work.
Sandra and Marcus this video in 4k was absolutely perfect. All the subjects were tiny and the colours, clarity and resolution were amazing. The only thing better was meeting you both there. We now have to go back and see the species we missed that you captured so beautifully. Will be sending this on to friends and colleagues.
Hi Paul, it's wonderful to hear from you and so glad you like the video too. Yes, we really had a great time together in Tulamben, it was wonderful to meet Linda and you in such a beautiful place. I am still asthonished how many Nudibranch you saw that we missed and vice versa. But honestly, we wouldn't have enough time to capture them all, so going back is definitely the best we can do! Thank you very much for all your support, that's very very kind of you. All the best and best wishes to Linda and you, Sandra and Markus
Fantastic video! I particularly love the super closeup shots. Which wet lens are you using for the super macro shots? Excellent work. I definitely need to get back to Bali now that the volcano has calmed down. Thank you for sharing.
Dear nyfrogman, thank you so much for your wonderful comment and your kind subscription, appreciate it very much! Yes, Bali Tulamben is one of our favorite places for nudibranchs. But we are already planning for Sogod bay inspired by your video. We use the Olympus 60mm f2.8 Macro with 1:1 maginifaction for all our super macro shots. We show our equipment in this video here in great details: ua-cam.com/video/r5dDOqveHZQ/v-deo.html
No, we do not use the macro wet lens anymore, it's too shallow depth of field for video. With best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel Thank you so much for the information.
Super schön! Danke für‘s Teilen! Speziell die Baby Costasiella ist super süß. Hoffe, die wurde nicht verspeist. 😳♥️👍🙏
I like the nudibranch too... Awesome video of the beaty of nudi
Dear Norbert, thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Gratulation, sehr coole Makros🤙
LG

Very well shot🧐😮👍
I know what they eat but does anything eat Nudibranchs? I love watching ur videos.👍🏻Nudibranchs are so beautiful it’s hard to believe that they have no eyes but get along just fine and have no problem finding food. 👵🏻🇺🇸👏🏼 Do you ever see those cute little Lumpsucker fish ?
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much. Nudibranchs are sometimes eaten by other Nudibranchs and for sure other predetors as well. For example if a parrot fish is eating corals and a nudibranch just happen to be in the wrong spot it will be eaten as well. They have a little light-sensitive eye-patch under the rhinophores that enables them to see at least some sort of light, but mostly it is their rhinophores (the antennas) that help them to orientated. They "smell" their food and other nudibranchs for mating. With best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel Thank you so much for ur reply, I will continue to watch ur wonderful channel.😁❤️👵🏻🇺🇸
Sehr, sehr schönes Video. Offensichtlich teilen wir die Freude an "grossen Kleinen" - Macro is one part of the heaven. May the air be with you.
Thank you sooo much ......natur is.... beautiful...facinating....

Nice video bro👍,,,what the camera you use???
Dear Budi Arta, thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much. Our underwater camera setup is presented and explained in great details here: ua-cam.com/video/r5dDOqveHZQ/v-deo.html
With best regards, Markus
Why is everything a uniform color of brown?
Hi Kathy, in Thulamben there are hardly any corals but mostly dark vulcanic sediments. In the video you can even see the vulcano erupting a bit. That morning the air was filled with a cloud of volcanic ash. Also the ash settles down on bottom of the sea and makes it appear dark. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Amazing video. Love the shots of the nudibranchs. I have started making some ceramic nudibranchs and this vdeo certainly gives me some inspiration.
Hi Amanda, thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much. In case you are looking for the names of the Nudibranchs, they are all stated in the video comment or in the video subtitle. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel If you want to see some of my work, I have a few pictures on Instagram @ceramicsbyamanda.
Great video some amazing shots of the fish doesnt look so many corals thoe. Looks a great place to dive definitely going on my bucket list
Dear Robert, thank you very much for your wonderful comment. You are correct, only few corals and fish because Tulamben is famous for muck and wreck diving to see small critters and nudibranchs. But from that point of view it is one of the best places. But Bali in total offers a good variety of dive sites (for example see our video about Menjangan here: ua-cam.com/video/pDiBo5H-MEg/v-deo.html ). Yes, we highly recommend this place in order to see nudibranch and critters. Also the guides are totally trained to find even the tinyest nudibranch for you. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Thanks for your reply I have done a lot of diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean and in the maldives which has been amazing I heard good thing about the place you have dived it seems bali etc seem to be amazing .I know past experience I think the maldives and gran Turks and some of the British virgin islands ive seen a great array of fish and corals .I will definitely keep it on my list and I will definitely check out your recommendations thanks for taking time out to reply .
