Grew up there in the Late 50's to 1970.... many memories mostly good..... Incarnation School... Highbridge Park and sneaking into the pool...LOL Mother Cabrini Dances..hanging out with my bro's on St. Nick Ave.... we were from all over, Jews, Irish, Greeks, some Italians and Hispanics... mostly working class ...yes a melting pot...
Very nice video. I must have seen hundreds of these videos of my old neighborhood. Born & raised in the heights. 175th st between Audubon & Amsterdam Aves. P.S.155, I.S.233 and GDubs is where I claim my education. Thanks for the memories.
I grew up there a little later (late 1960's and 1970's. I remember John's bargain store and Werthheimer's (they had an elevator, which I remember was always packed when I went there with my mother. Goldies was a popular spot.

You gotta remember that little Greek restaurant close to Wertheimer's that had the open grill by the window and had the best steaks and pickles on the table at 181st Street between Broadway and St Nicholas in the 1970s.
Hobbyland was on the corner of 182nd/st & St Nicholas Ave. Do you remember Worth-himiers, on the opposite side of 181st/st from Woolworths. Goldies (Army/Navy) on the corner of 181st & Audobon Ave, the was also a hunting/fishing/camping store on 181st between Audbon Ave & Amsterdam Aves. The was a place called the Doll Hospital on Broadway (between 180th & 181st), that place has some cool stuff (the name was misleading). I was a great growing up there.
I remember. Wertheimers. Woolworths. The bait and Tackle shop. They also had that fish market/butcher shop. Where they had those giant live codfish in the big metal Tub by the front window on St Nicholas Ave. Memories for a lifetime
I remember my mom walked me into hobbyland for my 9th bday and spent $100 on toys and play guns. That was alot of toys back in b the 70s. The one and only that happen. Good memory
Yeah, I recall St. Elizabeth's Church on Wadsworth Avenue, and how it allowed my doo wop quintet The Sinclairs [me, Eddie Albino, Arthur Stewart, Yusef 'Joe' Khan and Eddie Griffin] to sing there for its student body. The lady who granted us permission was the sweetest Irish lady there ever was and my mixed group of black, Spanish and white sang our tushies off there!

wow this is video is awesome i lived on 188th and wadsworth ave. from 1965 to 1980 went to p.s. 189 and 143 and gw, we use to hang out at around the bend, and go to center at saint elizabeths for dance parties on wednesday and friday
I really enjoyed this video; I was born and raised in the Heights (as well as both my Mom and Dad) I grew up on 192nd St (568, then at 370 Wadsworth). Went to PS 189 (my sisters and brother went to St. Elizabeth's). Later I went to JHS 143 and then GWHS (still went there even when we moved to the Bronx in 1979). Great neighborhood with great momories. Playing little league around the bend. Thanks for this video
Thanks Steph. I lived on Wadsworth & 190th from '62 to '92. (I'm 29 still) On FB there are plenty of pages such as, I Grew Up in Washington Heights, You are Probably from Washington Heights and a few others. Large collection of pics too.
great video! I grew up there from 72 - 82. ps189,143, love to go to st Es dances. lived on 191st and wadsworth. loved growing up there. still keep in touch with close friends even though I live in Cali
Yup, I recall Werthheimer's, Goldie's Army Navy and my favorite although its prices were 'pricey' during the 1950's. When John's Bargain Store opened up on 179th Street & St. Nicholas Avenue, my mother was amongst the first salespeople hired for that store. I recall Ripley's on the 181st strip which I think was across the street from the Automat?
The Automat (Horn & Hardart's) was replaced by Ripley's. My mom used to meet me once a week to take me to lunch at the Automat (when I went to PS 132). I was disappointed when it went out of business and was replaced by a clothing store.
