Something you'll learn about in K-Pop is that their videos tend to be full of symbols and meanings. Blackpink's "How You Like That" is a retelling of the classic Greek story of Persephone. Long story short, Hades, Lord of tbe Underworld, kidnapped Persephone, Goddess of Springtime, Flowers, and Vegetation. He lured her into a colorful bed of flowers and then erupted out of the ground with his chariot, dragging her down with him. Her mother Demeter, Goddess of Agriculture, found out what happened and went to Zeus, King of the Gods and also Lord of the Sky. Meanwhile, Persephone hated her new existence. She was growing angry and hated being kept down. A deal was struck that allowed Persephone to return to the world for about half of the year but she had to remain in the underground for the other half. So when Persephone returned to the world, she brought Spring and Summer. As she left, the world turned cold and decayed. This is the story all of them share, but silver-haired Rosé represents Persephone the most. In her scene at the beginning, she alternates between two locations. You see her happy with flowers and blooming with life juxtaposed with a dark, dirty cave. When she pulls on the mask, the first chorus comes through as the beat drops and they exclaim "How You Like That!?" The set is very green and full of plants. This is Spring. Summer is shown in the market with the lead rapper, Lisa. Fall with the purple background and umbrellas. And the Winter scene is obvious. Jisoo in the fire scene is the Goddess of Revenge, Nemesis, sitting on a spider-like throne. She's going through her list and throws the book when she's ready to deal punishment. At the end, the girls dance through a large hall and end up in a dome with 2 large Trojan horses. In the story where the Greeks hid in the horses, they erupted out of the horse secretly in the City of Troy and took over. These women use that to show that they have emerged and are here to takeover once again. And on the walls of the dome are an organic map. On the left is Asia and surrounding continents and on the right are the Americas, representing their global success. K-pop mv are so amazing bc of their visual complexity which basically means that your mind never gets board bc it always has something new to process. To create this high level of complexity they use a lot of different camera angles, transitions and set ups and a lot of cutting to create energy. For example in western mvs u usually have around 4-5 performance set ups in kpop videos u usually see around 15-25 which obviously makes a huge difference in the editing. Plus K-pop artists barely ever use green screen and the money and effort that goes into making those set ups look as interesting and visually pleasing as possible is insane!

Fun fact, this clip is based on so many Greek mythology references. Such as the Deus ex machina theatre style of representation in the beginning when they're lowering Nike, the goddess of victory and success above their heads, where they would normally pronounce the moral of the play. But instead of Nike, this is a representation of the Furies, the female gods of vengeance. There's also allusions to Hades, whenever they look underground, they're actually in the underworld, while Rose, in her coffin of flowers is a reference to Persephone, the goddess of agriculture. The coffin is falling to the underworld because in Greek mythology, she was taken by Hades, while she was picking up flowers for her mother. She then became his wife after an agreement, she could go back to the Earth for 6 months where she'd bring spring and summer along with her presence. While in hell she's the queen of the underworld, and 6 months per year, she dances her way through it, hence why we see them underground, dancing. It's a reference to Orpheus' music. We also see Lisa next to a falcon and later on with a falconry glove on which is a reference to Pheme, the winged messenger of Zeus. She's the goddess of rumour, fame and infamy. We see her small from the beginning and growing larger and larger at the end, just like rumours getting disproportionate after quite some . THere's also this representation of the suicides that've been going on in the last year in the kpop industry. Obviously the lyrics address this topic, it's kind of obvious with the chorus "Look at me, now loot at you, how you like that" but there's also a subtil representation in the video, which is also a reference to Greek mythology. First we see Jennie, wearing a red costume with a lot of silver jewels all over her dress, kind of like a reference to a spider web. She's seen with four dancers, 4 x 2 hands = 8, spider has 8 legs. Right after that scene, we also see Jisoo sitting on a chair that looks like a spider. The spider we're talking of here is Arachne, a talented weaver that challenged Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and crafts. In fact, she won the challenge over Minerva and Minerva sadly took it pretty badly. She beat her with her shuttle and Arachne hanged herself after out of shame. She then transformed into a spider. This is kind of stretched out a little bit. If they thought about it all though, it would be a reference of kpop artists being shamed and being victims of online bullying... That's it for me, although I know about all these mythology things, I didn't realize about the references throughout the video. It's all thanks to the British priest's sister's analysis (she's a classicist and a double first from Cambridge university), on JOLLY channel on BP's reaction video.

Fun fact, this clip is based on so many Greek mythology references.
Such as the Deus ex machina theatre style of representation in the beginning when they're lowering Nike, the goddess of victory and success above their heads, where they would normally pronounce the moral of the play. But instead of Nike, this is a representation of the Furies, the female gods of vengeance. There's also allusions to Hades, whenever they look underground, they're actually in the underworld, while Rose, in her coffin of flowers is a reference to Persephone, the goddess of agriculture. The coffin is falling to the underworld because in Greek mythology, she was taken by Hades, while she was picking up flowers for her mother. She then became his wife after an agreement, she could go back to the Earth for 6 months where she'd bring spring and summer along with her presence. While in hell she's the queen of the underworld, and 6 months per year, she dances her way through it, hence why we see them underground, dancing. It's a reference to Orpheus' music. We also see Lisa next to a falcon and later on with a falconry glove on which is a reference to Pheme, the winged messenger of Zeus. She's the goddess of rumour, fame and infamy. We see her small from the beginning and growing larger and larger at the end, just like rumours getting disproportionate after quite some .
THere's also this representation of the suicides that've been going on in the last year in the kpop industry. Obviously the lyrics address this topic, it's kind of obvious with the chorus "Look at me, now loot at you, how you like that" but there's also a subtil representation in the video, which is also a reference to Greek mythology. First we see Jennie, wearing a red costume with a lot of silver jewels all over her dress, kind of like a reference to a spider web. She's seen with four dancers, 4 x 2 hands = 8, spider has 8 legs. Right after that scene, we also see Jisoo sitting on a chair that looks like a spider. The spider we're talking of here is Arachne, a talented weaver that challenged Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and crafts. In fact, she won the challenge over Minerva and Minerva sadly took it pretty badly. She beat her with her shuttle and Arachne hanged herself after out of shame. She then transformed into a spider. This is kind of stretched out a little bit. If they thought about it all though, it would be a reference of kpop artists being shamed and being victims of online bullying...
That's it for me, although I know about all these mythology things, I didn't realize about the references throughout the video. It's all thanks to the British priest's sister's analysis (she's a classicist and a double first from Cambridge university), on JOLLY channel on BP's reaction video.
