Thanks Richard. I added that tip due to the number of herbicide questions, I've been getting now that spring is here. Now really isn't the time to be spraying that stuff on your lawn if you can help it. Keep the "cides" off your lawn unless needed right? Appreciate you chiming in sir.
All 5 tips I use and my lawn looks amazing. I cut twice a week with a rotary mower (cool season turf) not another soul on my block does. I got a compliment from my mailman who delivers mail to 6 blocks and he said my lawn is the best out of all of them
Thanks for chiming in AndysLawnCare. It's amazing what regular mowing will do for a lawn. The other tips are definitely important but you can't have a great lawn without frequent mowing. Appreciate you watching sir.
Same here man, I mow mine 2-3 times a week and at the highest cut setting. Makes a huge difference in the summer. My UPS guy and neighbors are envious and jealous. People even compliment me on my edging skills. I have extra crispy edges.
Thumbs up for the time stamps. Much appreciated. I can also vouch for the my soil test. I did one last year and compared it at the same time to my local university extension soil test. Results were effectively the same, but the my soil test was so much easier to read and interpret.

Do you have any tips for someone starting over a lawn with bermuda seeds and an inch of topsoil? I have 1600sqft and wants to grow from seeds as it is cheaper than having it sodded.
It’s cheaper to use seeds than sod Love but only if you have a way to keep the ground most for 3 weeks. You literally can’t have it dry out for 3 weeks. Soil temperatures also need to be at 65 degrees.
@@RonHenry Do you have any recommendation for the type of sprinklers I should get? Also, do I need to put fertilizer same time as the seeds? will it help germinate the seeds faster andngive soil more nutrients?
@@randomlylove3983 I'm a fan of in-ground irrigation due to convenience. Applying the fertilizer the same time or even a few days before seeding is a good idea. You'll want a bit of phosphorus to improve rooting.
Hi Ron! Thanks for your expert advice! We're in the south and have centipede grass on clay/red dirt foundation because of our home being a new build. It's horrible trying to get this grass thick and healthy. Any extra advice for me? I did fertilize two weeks ago and I did purchase a soil kit that I'll use this week. I was probably backwards in doing that. Take care. 😊
Hi KK. It's still fairly early in the season so the Centipede still has time to green up. One of the best ways to get to encourage the grass to thicken up is to increase your mowing frequency. If you already put fertilizer down, the lawn likely has enough food to get going. Not sure which part of the country you're in but if you start mowing now (even if just a little is coming off), it will help move your grass in a better direction. I'd be interested in seeing the soil test results once you get them back. That will help us to develop a better treatment plan. Once you get your results, feel free to email me at ron@golfcourselawn.com and I'll help you go through them. Appreciate you watching the content. 👍😎

Do you have any tips on aeration espeically the best timing if soil is too wet to do this operation or more or less aerate anytime . Plan to cut mine more often once it warms up a bit new reel mower the novelty has nt worn off yet ?!
Morning Peter. I’d wait for the lawn to dry out a bit before aerating it. There’s a balance between being too wet and soggy to where the aerator creates ruts. We obviously don’t want that. At the same time we don’t want the soil to be so dry that the tines can penetrate. Given what you’re describing, I’d give it until the end of April to early May before aerating the lawn. Hopefully the novelty of reel mowing doesn’t wear off for you. 😎 It’s one of the best things you can do for your lawn. Thanks for much for watching the content and for the kind words about the lawn. Hi Ron! Ive watched a lot of your videos and they are very informative! Here's the issue, i dont know where to start. I live in Clearwater ,Fl, most of the yard gets a combination of sun and shade, its a pretty small corner lot about 50 x 100 feet The yard has dips in it and i think is made almost entirely of weeds. 😬 Would you please direct me in the order i should do the repairs? My grandchildren and i would be forever grateful!
Hi Danielle. I'd start by getting the weeds under control. A herbicide that's safe for St. Augustine grass is called atrazine. You can get it here: ron-henry.com/atrazinertu That's a ready to use configuration so all you'll need is a hose to apply it. Given that you have 5000 square feet, you'll likely need 2 bottles. It's difficult to give you more advise on how to improve the lawn without pictures. Shade is the enemy of a great warm season grass lawn. If you can send me pictures of the lawn to ron@golfcourselawn.com, I'll do my best to help you out.
Hi Mr Ron have a question of my bermuda lawn i just mow it a couple of days ago and it was really green an about 3.5 '' high so i mow it to about and inch and now i am seen that is turning yellow almost everywhere i really dont know what i did wrong and what can i do to recover the green color , i bought 5 bags of milorganite but i have not apply them yet , i am watering it 30 min each section every other day can you please help me ?
You didn’t do anything wrong. If you cut that much of the grass off at once, it will turn brown. Just keep mowing it at the lower height. Watering every other day won’t fix it. It’s mowing that you need. At least twice per week to keep it nice. The green will come back. Thanks for watching.
@@RonHenry thank you Mr Ron ona last question i notice also that when i mowed my lawn the next day i saw the tips of the blades on the grass are seen like white and yellow is that normal or i have to sharpen my mower blades i have been using it like 4 times only but you tell me ?
Hi Ron, I very much enjoyed your videos/Friday chats and have a solid handle on everything except soil treatment. How important in the grand scheme of things (in getting a nice lawn) is it to treat the lawn with carbon? Be well, Marc
I suppose that depends on the health of your existing soil Marc. I’ve seen a lot of benefit from incorporating carbon soil amendments into my program. Many others have gotten great results too. If you’re doing everything else right as far as mowing frequency and a solid fertilization program, it’s definitely icing on the cake. In the golf course lawn academy I have an entire section on soil improvement. It’s actually the largest section in the course as of today. Can you get a nice lawn without adding carbon? Yes. Absolutely. Would it be even better with it? Yes. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching sir. Appreciate the support.
Maybe a dumb question but I put down granular preemergent after scalping and the lawn hasn't really greened up yet with weekly cuts. The weather has been inconsistent. Do you think the preemergent is stressing the lawn?
Hi Steven. Not a dumb question. I would get pre-emergent down sooner than later. You ideally want to have it in the soil before soil temps cross 50 - 55 degrees. I'm mainly referring to post-emergent herbicides. So leaf-absorbed products that are sprayed on actively growing weeds are the ones to avoid during transition. It's not going to kill the grass. Just will often delay green up. Pre-emergent applied at the correct rate shouldn't hurt the lawn. Thanks for watching the content sir. Let me know if I can help with anything else. 👍😎
