In past Pump Reports we've already talked about the internal gear pump - its operation, benefits, and common applications. But in each example we usually talk about the traditional internal gear pump with a rotor, idler, and crescent. But Viking Pump also manufactures another type of internal gear pump - this time without a crescent. It's still a type of internal gear pump with its gear-within-a-gear design but these pumps are more commonly referred to as gerotor pumps. Unlike a traditional internal gear pump where the outer rotor gear is the driver a gerotor is driven by the inner pumping element. It has one fewer tooth than the outer element creating the offset and pumping cavities. Basic operation is the same. As the teeth come out of mesh, a cavity is created at the pump inlet which fills with liquid. The liquid is then carried through the pump with the rotation of the elements to the outlet side where the gears mesh forcing the liquid out and into the downstream piping. A traditional internal gear pump uses the crescent to define the pumping cavities between the teeth of the rotor and the teeth of the idler. In a gerotor pump, the rounded shape of the inner element tooth runs in close clearance to the outer element creating pumping cavities without the need for a crescent. Viking gerotor pumps offer an economical low flow option for applications like hot cooking oil filtration or lube oil circulation. So while all gerotor pumps are internal gear pumps, not all internal gear pumps are gerotor pumps.
