I have information on how and where to find replacement strings for the banduria. Generically sold bandurias will often be strung with hard-to-press heavy gauge guitar strings so if possible change them with extra light guitar strings. Banduria strings are generally just plain steel guitar strings and copper or nickel wound guitar strings. The string gauges of an extra light guitar strings set make banduria much easier and more fun to play. Such sets of strings are typically sold at local music stores or online as super or extra light electric guitar strings and tend to be best within the range of the following gauges: .008, .010, .012, .022, .030, .038

I held on to it for a long time but when the Beatles (The FAB FOUR) became a hit in Manila, my brothers used my Banduria and my violin to play the Beatles songs because they did not have a guitar. Then later, my eldest brother started smashing all my instruments because he wanted to be Pete Townshend of the WHO.
It's a 6 Course Mandolin tuned in Fourths. There's a Zero Fret next to the nut so that way you have Low Electric Guitar-like Action to facilitate playability.

The first 3 courses (groupings) of 3 strings, each, are plain strings. Courses 4 (2 strings), course 5 (2 strings) and the 6th course (1 string) are, all, wound strings. I purchase 3 sets of extra-light-gauge strings for guitar in order to restring my banduria. You'll use *all* of the plain strings forthe 1st 3 courses. You'll have 1 leftover wound string for courses 4 and 5. You'll have 2 leftover wound strings for course 6.
From Glenn Villaluz Sagario: Just don't hold the pick with too much pressure during tremolo, just firmly with relaxed muscles. Allow it to be moved and bend up and down on your thumb, use a thinner but stiff plectrums. Pain/ Tensions are normal especially on long playing time that's why you need to flex back (pull backward your thumb) and rotate your thumb in circular motion to release the build up of tensions and improve blood circulation during breaks or in between transitions. Comfort positioning of plectrum depends on the players preference. But the proper way is to fold your fore finger (right hand) all the way in then place the plectrum on top of it in a 12'0 clock position then clip it with your thumb then turn the pointed part of the plectrum in a 10'0 clock position then when you tremolo, do not dip the pick too much under the string to prevent too much friction and resistance, in this way you could do much greater # of strikes / min during tremolo and greater speed with lesser muscle tensions on the base of your thumb and lesser chances of strings break-ups.
Aaron, I have checked everywhere, and I can't find anyplace that actually sells sets of 14. But I was told they can match the strings with the proper gauge if one breaks. They only place your going to find strings sold individually is in the Philippines. Try contacting Bandilla guitar store in Manila. I think they can be found on Google, but they definitely have a facebook account.

What's the ideal way to hold the pick when playing the banduria? The muscle at the base of my thumb always aches when I'm playing.
