Lifetime member here, and I'm so thankful for all that Roon does. I do have a request to the team though… it would be great to be able to have multiple windows of Roon open so that the album/playlist you are listening to remains in full view (with all the tracks and such) but when venturing down the rabbit hole (that Roon is so good at) it would open in another window or tab so you could explore all you want without having to navigate back to the current album being played. Perhaps I've missed something here and this is already possible, but I've not seen how yet. One additional request would be to have the ability to start a playlist on a chosen song (buried deep in the playlist perhaps) and start the shuffle from there. What happens is that it only shuffles the 'remaining' tracks beneath the song and not the entire playlist. Many times I have an itch to hear a certain song right away, then don't care what plays next… hence the shuffle. This is how shuffle works on Spotify, for example. Cheers, and keep up the fantastic work!
If you want more functional Roon information skip to about the 7:15 mark. The first half focuses on the background of artists and other extra items Roon offers.
Nice introduction, but it would be helpful to point out that 'New Albums', Your Daily Mixes', and 'Playlists by Roon' require a Tidal or Qobuz account. I have neither and it took me searching the community boards to find out why.
Isn't that the truth. It's just a sales spiel. I'm on the free trial and can hardly figure out what's what. I have my music on hard drive and it's been 5 days around the clock and it hasn't finished scanning my files. And I have no idea where it is and how much more there is to go. Plus, all my files were organized by the date. But Roon only looks at the first letter. So everything is messed up. But because of my endpoint, Roon is the only thing I can use. I'd jump on JRiver in a second if I thought that could work. 6 days into my free trial and still loading files.
Fixing metadata manually is very painful especially with digital download compilation albums. Manually dragging songs up or down dislocate other songs in the ‘edit’ window,. And if touched accidentally elsewhere on iPad screen, the edit screen disappears and changes are lost 😮 this is highly frustrating. Surely this could be managed better!
Nice overview. What initially sold me on Roon was the multi zone with multiple protocols that it can handle. From the hardware perspective it is fantastic. It is often overlooked when I read all the comments about metadata opinions. The endpoint hardware and software handling is second to none IMO. From the RAAT protocol to all others it can handle, that’s probably worth a video on its own.
Can Roon be used to focus on a record label i.e. explore their catalog ? I find for specialist labels this can be a great way to discover music but have not found this to be possible on Spotify or Tidal.
Enno this was a very good and comprehensive review. I wish had this when I came onboard. Please keep them coming. Keen also to get the Roon on permanently as a server type if that's possible.? Thanks Adam
Whoever runs roon’s social media account really is not doing a good job. They liked your comment but I don’t see a reply. They may have private messaged you, but to me not seeing any response isn’t a good look. Just some food for thought. I hope to continue to see Roon evolve and become even better than it already is right now.
Can I use Roon to simply upscale tracks that I mixed long time ago and not happy with the quality? not for streaming just to upscale my music. doesn't it work for that?
Not sure what this is a ‘walkthrough’ of? Walkthrough suggests a starting point of where to enter into something new with some explanation of how to use it.
most of all the other information is useless for me...I just like to listen to the music...so why is Roon better than Tidal❓and besides that, some of that information is already within Tidal? I'm not looking into taking a college course about the artist or song...It seems like just extra money wasted after already having Tidal❓show us Tidal users why we would want roon❓
I think you miss the main point of Roon: it gives you this functionality across multiple streaming services AS WELL as your own personal library. So, instead of jumping from Tidal, to Qobuz and your own stored music files, Roon collects everything and presents it all in one front-end interface. So, when the user selects a particular song, album, artist, etc. Roon shows this data across all available sources...even your own music files... and allows you to select which one you'd like to play. Additionally, Roon allows you to create or select play lists that have tracks pulled from multiple sources, again from your files, Tidal, Qobuz, etc. Finally, Roon allows you to control and play multiple streams throughout your home, so as long as you have Roon compatible/ready devices, you can play streams anywhere in your home independently from what other people are listening to in other rooms. If you only have one streaming service subscription and don't have a stored music file library, then yes, you probably don't need Roon. But, if like many of us who have extensive music files stored on drive(s) as well as subscriptions to multiple streaming platforms, Roon ties everything together in a way that nothing else can or does. Roon is one of those things that if you think you need it, you probably do.

They suck at explaining their service

This was great! Love Roon. It's made me fall in love with music all over again like when I was a teenager 🎶🥰

I hope AI will some day in the near future localize Roon available in more languages and can retrieve data for lesser known artists and composers.

How can you run this on a windows server? 2019
You had me at Beethoven.

That’s what I got from this personally. This walkthrough has shown me how to discover more about the app that I didn’t know existed existed.
We listen the music meta data what? fix a software to eliminate jitter from streaning platforms

To me it just sounds like Roon isn’t for you - and that’s fine.
