Good luck! It is quite fun to read classics in it's original languages, I find that to be a good goal to try to reach. If I ever learn Russian I would try to read "Crime and punishment" or "Anna Karenina". There's a famous Brazilian novel called "Meu pé de laranja-lima", which I always highly recommend. I read it in Spanish but would love to read it again in Portuguese.

This is definitely the most exciting time of the year for anyone who is passionate about language learning! Last year I had the intention of studying some new languages but mostly defaulted to ones I already knew due to time constraints with work, school, and family. I expect to have more time this year (after graduating college in December 2022) and am really looking forward to starting fresh with new goals and new languages! I also recommend the "Persian in Use" textbook for anyone learning Persian. All the best to you in achieving your goals this year!

I tend to learn languages till C1 before stopping active study of it. Only reading part to C1, speaking can be B2 level, that's fine for me. Taking it to C1 level makes it stay in my head in more proper way, even if I never study it again for very long long time. Also regarding Assimil, its a very good book, just know that it will not take you to B2. And instead of active language material, I suggest use it as side activity in very start of lang when you are learning its basics.
I tend to be the same way level-wise. It's my preference too. I couldn't care less about C2 to be honest. :)
Regarding Assimil, I am certain it won't get me to B2, you are right. It's never the level that's promised on the cover, no matter the publisher haha
@@PolyglotSecrets It's sneaky on the part of the authors/publishers but I imagine those books actually deliver if what you want is to get the B2 certificate. Unfortunately that doesn't make much sense for anyone since nobody (aside from outliers) is learning any language just to pass that test.
Hi i'm a student at 12th grade so my plan is to get highest gpa also i'd an intention to learn russian but i was come across only useless or boring materials
It's difficult for me as an arabian since my mother tongue is arabic
Also russian is not popular in arab world like some languages such as english french and turkishBut it was great that i found steve's channel and knew about lingue
I liked the way that it teaches a language
And wish me a good luck because i need to depend only on my ears as a blind man i can't use my eyes which is a pretty important fackter to learn

I dicided to add Romanian to my language plan! I heard that language for the first time and I just adore it. 🇷🇴
Besides that, I will learn Spanish, Italian, German, Czech, Bulgarian. I hope also we'll have some time for Portuguese. At least I understand not bad in Spanish and even better Italian in written, because French is the key to other Romance languages.

Good luck with your plans! I'll recommend a potential Greek resource - How to Be a Leader: An Ancient Guide to Wise Leadership (Jeffrey Beneker's translation). The entire book has its Greek version of the text (original, I presume) and the English translation side-by-side, basically a dual-language read. Pretty cool resource if I were learning Greek, especially in the realm of ancient wisdom/philosophy. There's a sample available on Amazon if you want to see how it looks.
I'm also not big on new year resolutions but I've set some goals for this year! The languages I'll focus on are mainly Spanish and some Swedish (I live in Sweden, so assuming you decide to give it some time, let me know if you ever need some "locally available" resources ;)) and Russian/French.
- My goal with Swedish is very practical as I'm trying to improve it as much as I can for a test. That'll be 3 months of intensive study and reading some books towards that purpose, heavily supported by LingQ (and lots of looking up words… don't hate :D). Afterwards it'll go on a backburner and I'll only limit myself to some extensive input and everyday conversations.
- Similarly to you, Spanish is one of my biggest interests ever since I got into learning languages. It'll be my 2nd year of learning it seriously and I'm planning on spending at least 500 hours with Spanish this year. My input has so far consisted mostly of reading so I'm switching things around and will do a lot more listening in 2023, and I finally feel my vocabulary allows me to start transitioning to mostly extensive input. I'll also start speaking for the first time, so that'll be pretty exciting!
- Russian and French - both are languages I'd love to learn but I haven't set any goals. I've always loved Russian and French music and the sound of these languages, and as you well know the entire Eastern Europe is insanely rich in history, culture, and literature. The thing is even in the best of times these languages would get much less time than others this year and I'm not sure how much I'm willing to dabble. But I'll choose one and spend _some_ time with it this year and just see what happens.
- bonus: Polish - not really language *learning* goal, but I've realized that I haven't spent much time with my own native language after moving out of the country. I'll be changing that by immersing myself in some Polish content in 2023.
On a side note - we both like learning through input, and we both seem to prioritize non-fiction over fiction. If you have some intermediate-advanced Spanish books and podcasts that you've loved, feel free to share! :D
I like your plans! I love the distinction you made about getting ready for a test - it's a whole different ball game and the usual best practices might be broken. So I get it. :)
Regarding Spanish, I recently got several books written in English translated into Spanish. It's a go-to for me. Especially non-fiction does not have to be in the original language. Also, I will always recommend Easy Spanish (Easy Languages channels in general are amazing). And Casa de Papel, which you might have seen, but in case you haven't - so worth it!

English bestsellers translated into other languages have been my go-to as well, though mostly it's because of how few non-fiction books originally written in Spanish there are, considering the number of native speakers :o though maybe I just haven't searched hard enough (mostly relying on whatever I find on Amazon). I'll for sure rewatch Casa de Papel in Spanish at some point. I've only seen it in English, so maybe I'll try that with the new season!
Hello, there is a googleplay app with translation called 'Bible Offline KJV with Audio' created by 'Mr. ROCCO'. It's menu under 'versions' has 38 language choices. Some w/ multiples.:) i will dig into my memory storage this year w/a french revival reading Guillaume novels. Then a gutteral dive into german by gargling those consonants & gain familiarity with cognates. Spanish drags me kickin' to rolllll those 'r's. From canadian cities to tip of Chile, its spoken in americas. My phonetic hungarian culture.hobby has vowel harmony. I aquired ' Japanese from zero' book (UA-cam video also!) for sampling. WwowW.
viel erfolg! und in einem halben jahr kannst du ein video mit laura auf russisch machen💪i guess i'll stick to improving. it's all about the energy, or lack thereof. still quite a few work related challenges ahead, so that's going to eat up a lot of energy. and in that state of charge i tend to consume media in "easy" languages only, stuff that can be processed effortlessly💁♂️

@@PolyglotSecrets and that's really the decisive factor. when i started learning in 2018 i had a "normal" stress level, was even a bit bored. and started to explore those 30+ languages, focused on the ones i liked and made reasonable progress. the last two years invece were a real struggle, been running mostly on autopilot. there's still progress but it's incremental, i.e. tiny... but, nothing to be done about it, maybe winning the lottery or sth💰💰💰

Happy New Year. I am interested to hear what you think of Assimil. I use it to learn Spanish. I like it - it does teach a lot of little grammar rules in the dialogue notes, which feels quite old-fashioned according to modern language learning techniques!
Interestingly enough, I've just bought the Assimil book for Spanish. I plan to start learning Spanish as a 3rd language in 12 months time, however I'm just accumulating resources before I start, including short story books. Do you have any other resource suggestions for Spanish?
Regarding resources for Spanish, I have some in my Spanish master guide video. Check it out :) In general, I also love getting books I like translated into my target language (especially non-fiction).
I guess all intro books can do that sometimes. Regardless, as a lover of grammar, that's totally fine for me. :) I find it fun, although mostly unneccessary haha
@@Tehui1974 I heard of Assimil via Luca Lampariello. I think he's one of the best language learners out there so if he uses it to learn, thats good enough for me.
Another book I would recommend is "Practice Makes Perfect Complete Spanish All-in-One". For apps there is Duolingo & Babbel. In terms of UA-cam channels Dreaming Spanish is surely the most popular out there cos it uses comprehensible input method. I also like Butterfly Spanish and Easy Spanish.

An insightful video. My main language goal for the year is to improve my second language (Māori) to an advanced C level (I'm probably B2 / C1 level at the moment). In 12 months time, I want to start learning Spanish as a third language.

Stefani, good luck on your language journey this year! I absolutely love your channel and your learning philosophy. Your English is simply incredible, but are you saying ''15-minute rule,'' or ''50-minute rule''? It sounds like fifteen, but I'm not sure. For 2023, my language goals include taking my Russian reading level from B2 to C1, which is like swimming across the Pacific Ocean. A few weeks ago, however, I was pleasantly surprised to discover I can read War & Peace alongside an English translation and manage quite nicely. I'm also language stacking German (total beginner) with Russian.

@@PolyglotSecrets I’m experimenting with your 15-minutes per day rule this year. Am very curious to see what can be achieved with such a small investment of time.
My plans are: Continue living life in Spanish and Portuguese, making more connections with people in those languages. Get my German up to B1ish and be able to watch shows with German subtitles. Get my French up to A2. Casually start Swedish and focus on auditory input. Finally, write songs/lyrics in my secondary languages and try translating my songs from English to these languages!
Wow, writing songs - that's next level! When do you usually find you are able to do that?
Have you thought about learning ancient Greek? I'd do that along with modern Greek. I know ancient, I need the time to learn modern well, but the little that I know is relatively easy, because I can see where the expression comes from (δεν from ουδεν, καταλαβαινω from καταλαμβανω, etc). If you're going to read the Homeric hymns (that's unusual, by the way; I assume you've read the Iliad & Odyssey), you should do it in the original!
100%, its time will come! I would love to learn Ancient Greek and read those originals.

I'm not a resolution person either, when I make a resolution I do it NOW or tomorrow at the latest. And obviously about little things, decisions about bigger things need time to grow and cant be called résolutions.
Ah yes, at the end of the day, it's all about energy management, energy or time, both are similar if not equivalent.
I was complaining recently about my lack of strength, compared to when I was twenty when i could stay up all night, one.. two nights in a row and still survive. 🙄
But yeah, your ability to find time and energy to learn languages, on top of your regular busy everyday life, is amazing. And inspiring, because I am rather the "not giving a F" kind of guy in my personal life, so I might be willing to change that one day hahaha 😂 😂
At the first days of this year, I discovered a quote: "if you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans". And it's basically me! 😆 whenever I plan, I immediately put it on a backburner. So, I decided not to set goal. Instead, get the small tasks done right away.
