  • This video was processed in 3D using the data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). This incredible spacecraft is currently orbiting the Moon in an eccentric polar mapping orbit, gathering vital information for future human and robotic missions. The LRO's detailed mapping is helping identify safe landing sites, locate potential resources, and understand the Moon's radiation environment. Here we explore the detailed mapping of the moon with the highest detail currently available. Look at each bump, crater, and mountain on the surface of the moon, while enjoying classical music from some of the most recognized artists.
The intent of this video is to enjoy the details of the moon's surface, while having relaxing music for a calming ambience. I would love to have a flat panel monitor in my office where this video plays on a loop as a living portrait of the moon.
The final render ended up being 141 Gigabytes! The displacement map was about 500 Megabytes, with the surface color map was of a similar size.
