    This is what I should have been learning in my art classes -.- man I hate school so much

    • @riss803
      @riss803 8 років тому +20

      i assume in your art class they are teaching you to "draw" and not to "illustrate" (what sycra is doing is illustration, but hes using the foundations of drawing while he works)
      drawing is a step you cant skip if you want to be an artist. if you start with illustration before drawing, you're going to mess your brain up and its going to give you a hard time really understanding form, light, and space.
      i used to hate my drawing class too because my interest was in illustration, but the better you get at drawing the more advanced your illustrations will become, so work on both (and maybe express to your art teacher that you wish to learn more about illustrating?)

    I've been looking at art tutorials for years and honestly, your how-to's are so fucking good, and probably the most helpful ones I've come across. I'm trying to get back into drawing, and over the past couple days I've watched your iterative drawing guide, and how to connect arms/legs to the torso and I just feel so informed instead of just fumbling in an attempt to mimic someone else. Thank you so much for these

    Could you do a tutorial/guide on studies. Like how to approach a study, different types of studies (anatomy, textiles, paint), what to pay attention to. and any mental art tips.

    That's interesting. I've recently started drawing the ribcage as a box to try and cement the perspective of the drawing before getting to caught up in it.
    I usually make the box pretty wide and think of the ribcage as being inside the box; as opposed to being correctly represented by it.
    I'm not sure if that counteracts the problem. I guess we'll see.

    • @MrMADman171
      @MrMADman171 8 років тому

      +Call Me Ishmael That makes sense to me. The only problem I can foresee with that method is that it makes the figure less organic, because a box isn't an organic shape. I'd say that an egg works better, but it would be wise to modify it a bit to include planes. That way you can actually see how it's oriented in space.
      I also like the "bean" method. You simplify the whole torso (ribcage through pelvis) into a bean shape. While it's not very great with perspective, it's really easy to twist and turn it around, getting some natural and lively results...
      As for me, I combined both the modified ribcage and bean methods into what I call a "one piece swimsuit" method. You take the entire bean, and modify it to include planes. It's fairly representative of the way the torso moves, and it gives you a lot more room for modification.
      Just some thoughts, hope this is of use.

    "The clavicle and the scapula are buddies, they're always doing stuff together." Aww...
    Edit: There's something interesting about the arms, which is that the pivot point in the shoulder girdle area is in the sternum, where the clavicle connects. So when you move your shoulders forward and backwards, up and down, that stays in place and the scapulas move around the ribcage.
    By the way, Sycra, the Teres Minor muscle almost never shows up. The main muscles in that "window" formed by the lats, traps and the deltoid are the infra-spinatus (which sits below the spine of the scapula; 'infra' = below) and the teres major (which goes from the bottom tip of the scapula to the top of the humerus, just under the 'ball'/head).

    Im watching this tutorial with a broken clavicle, its kinda... funny. I think I broke it right on the portion wich has no muscle, maybe that's the reason it didn't hurt that much. Great teaching skills mate.
