Great video, very informative! I'm going to do this right away as it's been driving me crazy!
Not sure if others aren't seeing your entire video, so many people asking about not having access to the bottom of the stairs (and some quite hateful ones at that!). Perhaps they aren't listening before they make their rude comments!

Tackling my squeaks today in UK! Plasterboard removed under stairs, wood adhesive applied, screws pre drilled to prevent cracking, next for PIR staircase LEDs then a layer of kingspan going in before new plasterboard

With no access under stairs, the actual stair tread moves when you step on it in the middle and there is a gap at the front above the riser when no weight is on it, how do you fix this? Put glue in and try and screw it from above?

not on stairs, but I used that kind of double-threaded snap-off screw kit to fix a super squeaky floor before. worked like a charm!
the trickiest part, both in stairs or floor, is to find where the supports are underneath (stringers or joists, respectively). my kit included a couple really long screws with just a 1/2" of the tip threaded, to help find those supports. if you drill that screw thru the surface and then it just spins and spins, it means you only hit air in that spot below. but if the screw keeps pulling in, it found your support of choice.

Unfortunately, you’re one and only solution is taking the carpet up fixing it and either putting it back or have someone replace it if the carpet is old enough and you’re able to afford it having carpet put on your stairs would definitely be cheaper to have installed as compared to a whole room.

@@Steve_Hayden no problem, Bobbie! I'm actually happy to share this little invention. It's super handy and works really well! I think I went over this in another comment here, but the hardest part is just finding the joist or stringer below the walking surface. But they give you a different kind of screw to help with that. Once I'd find a joist, I'd leave that screw in it sticking out. Then I'd find the joist again maybe 6' away, then tie a string between those 2 screws. I could then follow my string line all the way down the joist, sinking in snap-off screws every 6" or so.

    Drywall screws???

  • @pavlo687

I have my stairs stripped down to the utility 1" pine they were built with. Preparing to install oak treads and risers made from 1/2" maple plywood (and I finished them). I cannot access underneath stairs without removing drywall. I've tried drilling 3 pocket holes into the tread and can 'pull' the riser tighter against the rear of tread. Before tightening the screws, I 'injected' Titebond glue down into the rougly 1/16" crack. Then I tightened the pocket screws (1 in middle, and 1 on each side) and the crack tightened up and glue squeezed out. 8 hours later, still squeaking. I was also thinking of injecting melted paraffin wax down into the crack. will the oak treads, glued down with urethan glue help the strength.

"Fixing" a thing like this temporarily just long enough to sell it is a really dick move. It feels a bit in the same way as painting over your water damage or mold knowing full well it doesn't address the problem.

Not really cool to recommend this to aid realtors and hide something from buyers. Home buying is a nightmare enough without people actively making it worse.
