Small Engine Repair Valve Lash Clearance Adjustment on Honda, Predator, or any Engine
Вставка

- With that loud of an engine knock it was a long shot to just reset the valve lash clearance. If you watch to the end you will see the engine knocking is coming from the connecting rod on the shaft. Since nobody reads this description I’ll probably get a lot of people saying they knew right off hand that it was the connecting rod. This video isn’t to all those small engine experts. Its for those fix it in your garage type that want to add something to their bag of tricks.
Keep in mind, do this when the engine is cold.
This system works for all small engines. Doesn’t matter if you have a Honda, Briggs, Tecumseh, or even everyone’s favorite the Harbor Freight Predator 212. If you remove the pull cord assembly and it doesn’t have a triangle to designate TDC, top dead center (or both valves fully closed), you can pull the spark plug and put a screwdriver in and see when the piston is at TDC, then continue.

Easiest way to adjust the clearance is by turning the crank until one valve is all the way open/down, then adjust the oposite valve.
In this example the piston is actually almost ay BDC each time, and no need to be on the correct TDC stroke, and also no chance you are accidentally adjusting during the TDC valve overlap position instead of TDC compression.
This method also avoids accidentally adjusting the exhaust valve while the decompression cam is acting on the exhaust valve lifter/tappet👍
Also, try to leave the feeler gauge between the lash gap while tightening the lock nut, if the feeler gauge slips out you're gap is too loose, if it's hard to remove you're gap is too tight.
If it's just right, the feeler gauge will be held in place but won't be too difficult to remove ince the lock nut is tightened.
Minor point, the area that got hot shown in the video was the crankshaft journal, not the conrod, but most likely both will be worn, moreso the conrod being it's aluminium.
Saw in another video that leaving the feeler gauge in can damage it (if the nut tightens down on it and causes indentations).. maybe not in your example, but something to be aware of
@@kbach6524 Possibly, but of course you need to hold the adjuster screw firmly to try to avoid it moving when tightening the lock nut.
Feeler gauges are generally quite hard, so I'd assume there would be more chance of the valve starting to open before indenting the feeler gauge.
Always check that the piston is at top dead centre ( TDC ) on it's compression stroke , ....( there are two TDC's , one is compression stroke the other is exhaust stroke , ) if you are not sure , get someone who knows about four stroke engines to do it for you ,
Something to be aware of... all threads have back lash.. (slop) as you found out.
Set your lock nut on top to be in slight firm contact with your bottom nut when you feeler gauge.
Both those male threads to nuts fight each other on tightening and yes male threads DO flex as well....
Thanks for the input.
@Colin Jones Thanks,Colin. that is exactly the problem we ( a car mechanic and I ) are having!
Good luck mate, it’s hard to judge the skill level of a mechanic and there is a lot of luck involved in getting the right one.
Older mechanics with a very good attitude tend to learn and retain information

Rotate engine.
Observe the inlet valve go down.
Observe the inlet valve come up.......continue rotation slowly.
First TDC.......is the position to measure valve clearance.
Dont confuse the feeler guages metric mm or thousands of a inch.
Great points!
This should be pinned as top comment - one can get this so wrong if you don't know what you're doing - like this video.
I have a Sisley gauge and never used it before. SAE on top, Metric below that. Confusing those will lead to even more problems.
Would you know the feeler guage needed for 210 cc powerease BE water transfer pump. It's a 7 horse engine . Thanks
Sorry you'll have to look up the spec sheet.
Wow, I just fixed my generation with this, thanks
Fantastic!
My brothers mini bike did the same thing we tried to adjust the valves it ended up being the piston arm the two bolts backed out we took the side case off and tighten them up and no more ticking
Wow, never heard of that but glad you figured it out. 😀
thank you for making it easier for folks to maintain their equipment in light of the situation where there arent enough repair shops that can do the job work in a timely rate and when its nearly a toss up to just buy a new unit or fix it DIY. Thanks for being part of the solution for many of us in this situation.
Thank you for inviting us to dinner. I didn't realize this! Food 4 thought.

Not sure if you mentioned... I FF'ed through video, but spec is also within +/-.02mm. In inches these Hondas are .006 intake, .008 exhaust, +/-.001.
Good point. Except that you fast forwarded through the video, haha!
Are you mixing up imperial and metric?
Wow what a nice videos, I'm so happy to see such a unique videos from you! Won't be much help, I don't do much with pistons. Take care!
This saved me on a service call im normally a deisel engine tech, hopefully I did right lol
Right on!
My engine turns off when taken off of the choke could the lash being offset be the problem ?
Sounds like a carburetor issue to me. Main jet is probably clogged.
Bad gas
Sir why my engine marine kenbo 7.5HP Can't down speed slow but in the fast speed there was no problem why please help me
Maybe someone else can pipe in but I'm not even sure what your issue is. What is down speed slow?
I've used this sprayer several times now on brick pavers, a wood deck, patio, and a driveway. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX It has performed as expected on all surfaces. For larger areas like the decks and patios, I think I will be looking into a surface cleaner attachment to speed up the job, or at least make it a little easier. Hose and sprayer connections are tool-less, tight, and quick. I used the yellow nozzle on the concrete/brick surfaces, and the pressure was adequate for cleaning those surfaces.I am disappointed that these units are still being shipped with a nozzle storage holder that allows them to vibrate out of the holder way too easily and become lost, but I don't want to knock off a star for that reason. The functional part of the washer works very well, so I would recommend this product.
Sure thing!
So my zero turn which has a predator 700 motor on it had been hard to start and then backfiring a lot recently and I pressure washed it one day and now it won’t start and I took the valve cover off and the cam rockers or valve rockers are super loose and it would run for like 10 seconds and then cut off and I’m not sure what my problem is with the right cylinder which is my problem having 40 psi of compression in my left cylinder having 160 psi of compression
Did you ever figure out the issue?
Finding tdc is not necessary to adjust valves. Just rotate engint till the valve you want to adjust has it's tappet on the base circle of the cam, ie valve fully closed. This makes it so you need not remove the recoil start assy.
Great point.
This is true. Well said.
I have never used a set of feeler gauges on these. I just tighten them until they barely wiggle and have had zero issues out of any of them.
Hey if it works, it works!
Right on!
There are two TDC (top dead center) on 4-cycle engines. I think you need to be sure it's TDC on the compression stroke when adjusting valves. This makes a difference on certain engines I was told. I'm by no means an expert on small engines but found this out the hard way.
That's true, but it's easy to tell which stroke you are on if you can see the rockers/valves. TDC compression, both valves are closed. TDC exhaust, the exhaust valve is open.
U can check tdc by pointing piston with a screw driver
@@ajay-xr9gp on a 4 stroke the piston goes to the top twice in a cycle
@@Z3n1tHL0rD yes but by navigating the tappets which is moving during rotating engine...
Place your thumb over the spark plug hole and rotate the engine, once you feel compression that is the correct cycle to adjust the valves get piston at top dead center...
You're lash is still loose! What you are hearing is rod knock or a stuck lifter.
Right on, thanks!
What makes a petrol water pump not to perform well in suctioning water
Sounds like a pump issue?
Gooday! My Friend firstime subscriber,
It's standard setting in all Gasoline &
Disel Genset .15 for intake & .20 for Exhaust for Valve adjustment?
I would assume it depends on the brand and model.
Different manufacturers have slightly different specs.
I changed my intake valve because it was leaking now my bike tappy loud when the bike has warmed up . What could it be
What do you mean by tappy loud?
@@-DIYPRO- just a tap defo not a knocking sound. When you drive you can't hear it but when at low revs you can hear it. Bike runs fine tho even with low compression lol
If they are not right can that make it hard to crank or pressure on it even when no hoses are connected
No, you should still be able to crank it. Pressure may be slightly off, usually pressure is way off when you loose a ring or broken piston.
Hey bud maybe you could help me out I have a predator engine I bought from harbor freight last winter and I started running it probably around April put the mud mud motor long shaft and it ran good didn't have any problems with it then after about having it out for five times I was driving I drive for about 15-20 minutes and all of a sudden the engine was like start to vibrate real loud like a crazy noise I can send you a video if you want let you listen to it but I thought it was a shaft but I took the shaft off and it's doing the same thing so maybe you can help me out I appreciate it thanks
Still doing it? Have you taken the cover off and checked in side?
I adjusted my valves which was needed as I saw they were over tightened. Now that the valves fully seal up the engine is extremely hard to turn. As if the compression release isn't working. I'm stumped. It ran fine before so idk what's going on
3 yrs on my Champion, no valve adjustment. Think it died, no start, cleaned carb, checked coil.?????????
Stay in school!
Doesn't sound fixed to me
My Honda clone engine manual says 0.10-0.15 for intake valve clearance and 0.15-0.20 on the exhaust
it sounded the same???
It was the same, ended up being a different issue.
I had to replace the push rod guide plate on my Gentron generator, looks like a Honda knock off. I only found a cap on the exhaust valve spring. Is there suppose to be a cap on the intake side also?
I can't guarantee but the ones I saw so far didn't have one on the intake valve.
No.
Thank you so very much sir for the info
Right on, thanks!
This is incorrect 1:15 - incorrect TDC chosen. (as per the instructions you show later). Swing it another 360 degrees to get to where both valves are closed.
directions for Champion Generators different. Wait one side go down adj other. Champion videos maybe decomp?
What feeler gauge is point two? WTF That little piece of knowledge is more important than the rest of it! Which feeler gauge is point one five?
Fucking thank you man, nobody online knows TDC for these damn things
Do you know valve settings for Generac power washer model 65950 with a 196cc engine.
This diesel or petrol..????
Petrol?? you must not be from around here, haha! Yes it petrol, or regular gas.
Gasoline 👍🏼
I have a wpx3200 pressure washer and can’t get it to start. I did valve adjustment and found intake rocker arm was very loose and could rotate it without even loosening nut and exhaust valve was too tight. Did the adjustment and now it feels better when pulling cord but still won’t start. Cleaned carb, fresh gas, new spark plug and gets spark, air filter is good, with fresh gas. Any other suggestions? Doesn’t start with starter fluid either. I do get some pops when attempting to start like some backfire.
Forgot compression stroke

Can you do this without feeler gauges? If so how lmao, gotta predator 212 I've cleaned the carb and it won't start with even with hot sauce, guessing it might be this
Have you checked for spark? That is my go to after I've ruled out the carb.
@@-DIYPRO- thanks, my oil is a gray color that means there's water right?
You make use of a flat razor blade the get the clearance required
i still hear the knock??
Yea I mentioned that at the end of the video. This did not fix the knock.
Thank you very much big man Thanks for sharing your great knowledge 👍.
Thanks!
Not a very accurate way of doing it....

It bothers me on why the exhaust is less open then the intake when exhaust is what I would rather have discharged most and still have a considerable valve seating both valves
I'm sure there is a lot of science that goes into that one.
It’s not just valve clearance the shape of the cam lobe may hold the valve open longer
Hi. The clearance is bigger because the valve and the stem are subject to the much higher temps of the exhaust gasses. Therefore apt to expand more over it's length. This is true for every internal combustion engine
What would cause the jam nut to tighten causing exhaust valve to tighten after running just once or even a few runs? Thanks
Some day I might buy a 2nd engine and take apart the one I have now and learn how it works.
yeah buy that second engine first i took apart my go-kart engine thinking "how hard can it be" its been 2 years and i havnt got it to drive since then

Within Hondas, yes they should be.
so vavles loosen distance or get tighter age. Garage generator videos says tighten up age
Moen Pass
How do know which is intake & exhaust if they are stacked on top of each other not side by side
Sounds the same to me lol
I see it was a rod issue .good video regardless.
Yep, it was the same.
Was still fun to test this out!
What feeler gauge did you use for that engine
I've had them for awhile. I think they are just a cheap pair pick up at an auto parts store.
Thanks for post
You're welcome
I couldn't tell the difference in the sound.
Nope that didn't fix the problem. At the end of the video I took off the cover and found the tie rod was too loose.
@@-DIYPRO- ...tie rod?😶
I checked all the files of info, in my brainium,,,the ones that still work,,,lol
All info refers to the connecting rod, ( that metal thingy,,,between the crankshaft and the piston)🎯😁☕
You can watch those guys in India and Pakistan,,, they can remanufacture anything in about 60minutes, or less...lol
Thanks
No problem
I have zero gap on the exhaust valve, no matter what stroke the motor is in. What's the issue?
Does the valve spring move when you rotate the cylinder? Maybe the valve is stuck
@@jonathanyoung2588 I figured it out. The valve keepers were wore smooth. Replaced and within 1.5 hours the next set were worn off. I'm guessing excess heat/wear from not getting oil for some reason.
Let us know when you find out the issue.
@@-DIYPRO- not sure of the cause of why the keepers are being worn down. The company is sending me a whole head assembly. Not sure if that's going to fix the rocker/valve springs if they aren't getting oil but we will see.
@@clintsmith3408 the piston rod lasher should be throwing oil up into the head to lubricant the valves. But if they are wearing out fast make sure the rocker gap is correct and not too tight. It doesn’t have to be off much to to the low side to cause excessive friction against the cam. ☺️
Thanx very helpful
Most welcome
hii did you found out what was causing the knock i have an honda just like yours doing the same
Lol it might be a rod knock.
I would make sure your engine has a sufficient amount of oil, if not then you need to change the oil
@@logertgogert3227 changing the oil won't fix a rod knock or any engine damage
Is it me or does it have the same sound it did at the beginning of the video. Jack is right you need top center with closed valves. Try it once again.

Rod bearing
Taking the governor out doesn’t make it run to hard it only effects throttle because all the governor does is hold back throttle it’s better to remove it for higher performance
Correct but who are the people that take governors out, those that want to go full throttle. Doing that constantly puts a lot more stress on the engine and somethings got to give.
The governor is there for a reason, to keep extreme rpm from damaging the engine ! The engine rpm is controlled by the governor to run within manufacturers recommend SAFE rpm range !
You don't have any idea how much you helped me i pressure washer would not start and i fixed the valve and worked perfect thank you.
