- EarthCam released this Telly Award-winning 4K time-lapse movie showcasing construction for The Oculus, New York City's new transportation hub, from July 2011 to May 2016, in honor of the ribbon cutting ceremony on May 26.
A message from the CEO and Founder of EarthCam, Brian Cury:
“Unique and impressive designs like The Oculus are defining 21st century architecture and my hope is this movie acts as a time capsule of our innovative culture. We are proud to provide industry leaders with a powerful visual medium to showcase their legacy projects in a meaningful way for future generations.”
EarthCam’s time-lapse editors pored over more than one million high-resolution photographs and panoramas, and hand-edited them into a cinematic time-lapse movie, showcasing the nearly 5-year project from start to finish in less than 2 minutes.

Love the rapid zoom-transition you pulled at 0:45 to change the camera angle. Though it didn't seem too complicated upon close inspection, it really created that 3D feeling.
I really have to give it to structural and design engineers. My dad was a Civil Engineer and I admired and always thought he was “smarter than the average bear.” (You oldsters like me will get that!)

Does anyone else realize the oculus hub is basically a giant eye ball with massive eyelashes sticking out at the top? I wonder what what made them go with that idea.

It's supposed to be a phenix like bird in ascension. The extended arches are wings. they were supposed to be moving parts. e.g milwaulkee art museum designed by the same architect, has wings that extend & fold. the original plan was to have these wings that would extend to the max on 9/11, as a form of symbolism of survival, but they couldn't afford it and there was space constraint in the area around it. So they are fixed, permanently extended.
Ehrm no it's an eye. Occulus in Latin means "eye". It's even supposed to open every year on sept. 11 for 102 minutes

So I've been there a few times. I'm a big fan of Calatrava and the structure is stunning. But it's basically a big mall and it doesn't really function well as a transit "hub".

Jerminnik Dunbar it's on hold, since there isn't a major tenant to anchor the building. until a major tenant anchors the building, 2 World Trade Center will be built.

I know, it’s core was already on its way up then they just stopped. Hopefully they continue again soon, but by the looks of it, construction on the newly redesigned 900ft 5 wtc will begin before 2 wtc

For others reading the comments - there's a parking garage down by the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel entrance that is convenient for access to the WTC site adjacent to this building. It's maybe a 5-10 minute walk. I found the price for the garage to be acceptable, but I was also parking for 8+ hours...

Can’t believe it took 5 years to build this ! Mean while in China they can complete a whole skyscraper in 6 months !!! Why is that ???????????????
Except working conditions in China are far worse, and structures can very often be of lower quality. I mean, one time a Chinese construction firm forgot about something as simple as water displacement when building land out into a river, and it made an unfinished high-rise topple over. Luckily no one was hurt. A skyscraper also randomly started swaying for no apparent reason. I could go on.
China might be able to build fast, but it's at the expense of people's safety, and the structural integrity of what's built.
Here in the US, we have things agencies like OSHA that oversee the safety of work environments, like construction site, to make sure the safety of the people is being respected. Look at the Empire State Building, it was built in like 13 months, but 5 people died because of dangerous conditions. Ex: No hardhats, no safter railing, no safety harnesses, slippery surfaces, etc.
OSHA didn't exist back then, and didn't until the 1970s.
In conclusion, fast doesn't equate to better, and Chinese construction firms often cut corners to get the project done quicker while their government doesn't care. That would not fly with OSHA, whose mandates have minimized work-related deaths and injuries.
(Note: Injuries are still common, it's still a construction site where many things can go wrong, but we no longer have as many severe injuries, like lost limbs and accident-cause paralysis, and falling from a 200ft high ledge is extremely rare thanks to railing and harnesses.)
