    Flamingo Land is technically my closest 'major' park, and in the 13 years I've been driving, I've gone twice.
    In that same period, I've done Alton 15 times. That's says probably everything you need to know!

    • @pjw1993
      @pjw1993 9 місяців тому +6

      To expand though, I think sadly it's just too remote to draw a big crowd bar the sort of clientele that stay in their on site caravan park.
      I doubt an RMC Raptor or anything of a higher scale would ever be feasible in their current trajectory, but they could aspire to be the Paultons of the North. At present though, the management just seem utterly apathetic towards guest experience.
      The fact they take measures to actively reduce ride capacity by choice, and have the worst operations I've seen in ANY park, just make visiting the place exhausting

    Flamingo Land is my home park. It's really easy to get to for me.
    I still visit Alton Towers more. It's like you said just ok.
    It's great for getting a lot done in a day. I've managed 42 coasters in the 6 hour opening times on a dead day. Worst case scenario when it's busy you can still do everything at least twice.
    I like it, I don't love it.

    Flamingo Land is fantastic! It has awesome rides that are right up there with the best. Sik is one of the best coasters in the UK. Kumali is also up there as one of the best rides, it has a huge drop and is so smooth to ride compared to other versions from the manufacturer. Odyssey for example is so rough and uncomfortable. Not only do you get incredible rides but you don't have to put up with queuing for hours just to get on one ride. Yes, I agree its not particularly well themed and it would go a long to invest in this area and put them right up there. But you can't knock this place it is awesome.

    Last year they bought some Greater Flamingos and made a new enclosure for them next to the Lost River Ride. They also have the Chillian Flamingos and another breed of Flamingos in the zoo which you can view from the raised pathway over the South American area or from the lake in the Wallaby walkthrough area. This year they are redeveloping the old lost river ride into a new water ride using the old trough but extending it further towards the lake that Voodoo and Kamali are over. Flamingo Land is a family owned park that operates on a tight budget which is why developments happen very slowly over time, it does not have the money that Merlin has, it has come a long way since the 1990s when it had a lot of temporary rollercoasters and fairground rides. I go mainly for the zoo but it is our best theme park in Yorkshire much better than Lightwater Valley and Gullivers at Rother Valley, which are the alternatives in our area. I prefer Flamingo Land to Alton Towers because Alton mainly caters for thillseekers where as Flamingo Land caters for everybody and do not forget that a lot of people that go to Flamingo Land are Holliday makers staying at the park or in the surrounding areas and these are mostly families wanting a day out not theme park enthusiasts.

    I honestly think that Flamingo Land is lining itself in just the right spot to have a solid and bright future with Sik's addition to the park. What was said about Sik being a supporting coaster for 'The Coaster' that isn't there yet is true, but I feel like one day it will be there and hopefully the park will be a lot more solidified with it.

    So I haven't been to Flamingo Land for ages but it holds a very nostalgic place in my heart. Sadly the owners don't really have to put too much money into it because they know the people who go to Flamingo Land are families living in the relatively poor North of England who wouldn't be able to afford to travel all the way to Alton Towers!

    I love Flamingo Land, the big rides are great and the zoo is undoubtedly fantastic.
    Some areas could definitely use a bit of TLC and others sprucing up a bit, like a Splosh and Metropolis revamp would be great, however you must admit that the park do some things well; like having free parking, great public transport connections (as you tested), fantastic accommodation options, great maintenance (Kumali is very smooth for an 18-year-old SLC), dogs allowed in the park, huge themed animal enclosures, fantastic food etc.
    I feel you focused more on the negative aspects of the park instead of what is actually good about the place, and especially for a park that gets not too much attention even in the UK doesn’t show the full story.
    I agree that being under ownership of a company that pour lots of investment into a park would be very beneficial to many aspects of it but they are getting more and more successful so I think we’ll start to see changes for the better.
    Truly underrated in my opinion and a park to watch over the next decade.

    Flamingo Land is my home park, and I agree with a lot of what you're saying. The theming aspect of the park is very tricky.
    Here's my hot take:
    1. Mumbo Jumbo (2009) was their last attempt to actually bring in a new attraction that's themed to an existing land and have it play into its concept.
    2. Dino-Stone Park (2013) was decently themed when it opened. Pterodactyl had more seats and theming on the ride than it does now. I feel this was the last time Flamingo Land actually refurbished any area of the park properly and tried to properly theme it.
    3. Hero (2013) was the start of them trying something new. I'd assume they did this because it's very different to anything else in the park. Unfortunately, as someone else here quite rightfully said, we did lose a perfectly good wild mouse in the process. The theming on Hero is very poor, and didn't really fit with anything in the surrounding area at the time of opening. A huge step away from the standard of Mumbo Jumbo.
    4. Flamingo 1 (2017) was the breaking point, in my opinion. Any prospect of theming that the surrounding areas had before this attraction became very irrelevant and out of place. Slapping a huge F1 car ride attraction directly in the center of the park was an incredibly dumb idea, because it doesn't really fit with anything.
    5. Sik (2022) is, I feel, the point where the park tossed the towel in and gave up trying to theme things. Right next door to Sik, we have Velocity. They play rock music in the station. Sik is nothing like that. You'd think they'd want to try and bundle the two together and keep the theme relatively similar to tie things together a little better and give themselves a headline attraction. But they haven't done that.
    So to summarise, the park has essentially downgraded over time. It doesn't get much investment, as we can clearly see from the condition of the rides and the lack of care from the way they've left the lands that do have some sort of theming in them. And the investment it does get goes into attractions that are wildly different to anything else at the park, and there's no effort to try and make anything match.
    So my final opinion of Flamingo Land is: They'll add a ride every few years to get some attention. Management don't really care about whether it looks nice or not. The zoo they'll upkeep because it's their history, the holiday park they probably make a lot of revenue from, so naturally, that's what their priority is.

Its probably the closest park to me in terms of distance so says alot when places like towers are much more re-visitable. Also would probably visit more if it wasnt super expensive, its the most expensive park in the UK by a country mile. Its best rollercoaster is a clone of Colossus at Thorpe Park, a decent looper but nothing outstanding.
      It's also got a decent S&S El Loco, but not comparable with Lost Gravity at Walibi Belgium, for example.
      And Velocity is a fun ride, but it's not got much of a layout. It's basically Rita but with motorbikes.
      Kumali is above-average for a Vekoma SLC, but it's still a Vekoma SLC. And it doesn't have the new restraints.
      And Hero is trash.
      This place can't compare with Alton Towers, Europa-Park, EnergyLandia, PhantasiaLand, or PlopsaLand de Panne. It's also probably not as good as Walibi Holland.
      The rollercoaster lineup is comparable with Thorpe Park's before Hyperia was built, but outside of rollercoasters, Thorpe Park is much better.

      Its one of the only SLCs you will find that isn't in Asia that has a different layout, they could have just gone with a standard SLC layout if they wanted to but they didn't. To me, Flamingo Land is a decent independent in the U.K. The rides could have better maintenance but you know, it’s not a big corporate and probably doesn’t have the money to re invest - particularly after covid when they still had all the animals to feed, I’m surprised they didn’t go bust.
    You are wrong about the zoo. The zoo may have come first but it never used to be as good quality as what it now is. They’ve totally revamped it and I hardly recognise the zoo now compared to my childhood.
    It was very much about the thrill rides like magnum force, the bullet, corkscrew, thunder mountain etc. The original owner (the father), had a passion for thrill rides.

I'm not even tall but my legs can barely fit in the trains, the lapbar and seats squeeze you within an inch of your life and the swing launches are completely forceless, I desperately want this coaster model to disappear off the common clones list...

      The trains are definitely awful, can agree with you on that one. There are several similar style rides from other manufacturers that would also be decent fits. S&S, Intamin, Gerstlauer, and Zamperla all have their own variations of the compact swing launch coaster.

    Great review! Flamingo Land is my home park (despite living an hour away!) and I haven't been since I stayed there for a week in 2021.
    Everything you said was correct here. The park is unloved, all of the rides look dirty and in need of a major repaint or jetwash (especially Hero, because jeez Flamingo Land, you have an awful ride and you want to make it EVEN WORSE by not cleaning the dirty green stains all across the ride?! 😆) But yeah, the lands are excuses for little-to-no theming. The Runaway mine train is listed as being in Muddy Duck Farm, even though it's nowhere near there-and also, technically it's in the Splosh area you didn't mention, even though it doesn't thematically fit there (like many rides at this park!) Since out last visit, we've said no to Flamingo Land, and opted for much further-away theme parks instead (Blackpool Pleasure Beach twice, Disneyland Paris, and Legoland Windsor this year)
    I wish the owners would put more care into the park, by taking out all the carnival rides (and Hero), giving the park some TLC (this is question will involve a lick of paint and a splash of water) giving us actually themed lands, and adding something new and modern (one of those new Zamperla launch coasters? Just saying 🙂)

    You have to remember when comparing flamingo land to Thorpe park and Alton towers is that flamingo land is a family owned park and the others are owned by a big company, BUT I will have to agree with you and over the years it’s become more underwhelming. It used to be so much better back in the day when they had rides like the bullet, magnum, corkscrew, wild mouse!

    You know, if they really wanted to have a signature, must ride thrilling attraction that was also fairly cheap, you'd think they'd buy an Intamin Mega-Lite or a Vekoma Bermuda Blitz (namely, a clone of Lech Coaster at Legendia).
    Both would have more than enough airtime, and the latter could even be touted as one of the most intense experiences in a U.K. theme park.

    • @joshuawells4842
      @joshuawells4842 9 місяців тому +1

      Fully agree something like lech would be an excellent fit for flamingo land, especially if it was themed well. Then go with a mega-lite after. Would make the park worth visiting again!
      They have the space to be a truly amazing park, but it needs proper investment. 2 amazing coasters with 3 okay coasters would still be a good lineup.

    If there is one thing id love you guys to work out is why the hell does the UK have no RMCs? Please work this one out for me

    • @me-myself-i787
      @me-myself-i787 9 місяців тому +1

      It's because we don't have any wooden rollercoasters which aren't either historic (like the ones at Blackpool), well-regarded (like Megafobia), or newly-built. And any we do have are at parks which don't have the budget to RMC them.
      And when it comes to building ground-up, RMC has to compete with loads of other manufacturers; they might have rides which are more marketable or have better train designs. The restraint design is probably a reason Thorpe Park went with Mack rather than RMC for Hyperia.
      Plus, UK parks don't build rollercoasters that often. Icon (2018) was Blackpool Pleasure Beach's first rollercoaster since Infusion in 2007. That's an 11 year gap.
      Hyperia (2024) was Thorpe Park's first new rollercoaster since The Swarm in 2012. That's a 12-year gap. Although, their last major addition overall was Ghost Train (2015), so that would be a 9-year gap. (Thorpe Park wanted to diversify their lineup because they were already full of rollercoasters)
      Alton Towers, England's best and highest-budget theme park, got Wickerman in 2018, 5 years after The Smiler in 2013.
      Finally, Sik (2022) was FlamingoLand's first new rollercoaster since Hero in 2013 - that's a 9-year gap - and its first good rollercoaster since Mumbo Jumbo in 2009 - that's a 13-year gap.
      The 4 major thrill parks in the UK have gaps of 5, 9, 11 and 13 years between major new additions. As a result, they're slow to jump on new trends. But Alton Towers's next rollercoaster might be an RMC.

      @technoandrew 9 місяців тому

      As far as conversions of older coasters go, the UK doesn’t have a load of large scale woodies built by the likes of CCI, Dinn or RCCA that would make good RMC candidates. The smaller parks will be looking at family attractions or cheaper relocations of older coasters. And the larger parks don’t get big new coasters very often. There’s a lot of competition too, and RMC being US-based doesn’t help them compared to their European rivals.

    more than likely the closest park to me with me being in South Yorkshire, but it's hard to disagree with much you say.. I've been once and it was awful.. but I don't really agree on the theming as I don't give two hoots about that - just gimme some good rides!! Which this place never has. best park I've been to in the UK has to be blackpool but that was in the 90s and it was a whole load better then due to the free entry.

    Yeah this looks just shabby, not very good or high quality. I assume this is like the poor mans Alton Towers. The UK has notable wealth inequality, especially in the north where this is, so for many families, a place like Alton Towers is probably out of the question, and Flamingo land is one of their best shots. In terms of their location, Flamingo land is pretty close to Scarborough which is a major domestic tourist destination and Flamingo land is the closest theme park to there. So they can capitalise on the holiday goers who go to Scarborough and in that case they might go for a visit to Flamingo land while there.

      Tbh Sik is a better experience as far as ridability goes (the lapbar restraints and modern style trains certainly make a more comfortable experience) but riding a better version of Colossus certainly isn't worth the trade off with the rest of Thorpe's coaster lineup.

  • @moddenby4525
    @moddenby4525 9 місяців тому

    I get what your saying but flamingo land is what it is the uk is bigger than you realise spending short a short time going fastest routes. Its in the top 4 in the UK probably 4th but nearest is blackpool which is like 2 and a half hours away they don't really have any competition and always just done their own thing you wouldn't say coney island needed theming lol they'll allways be a car park with some rides in it 😂 And about investment Thorpe hadn't added a new coaster since 2012 until this year so arguably flamingo land has had more in the last 10 years. But like you said quality over quantity i certainly don't go there year on year like I do Thorpe
