No it's his job to ask questions about the movie which the viewers may find interesting. He is not supposed to know every single detail of their lives. He interviews LOADS of people, and all you are is a fangirl to the Hobbit crew so of course you know details about their lives.
He's no more annoying or ignorant than all those American and Canadian interviewers who don't even bother to find out how to pronounce "Armitage". And anyone, but anyone, can become a little confused some times
