I clearly understood where you're coming from and that your intention wasn't that of a bad one. But I think it would have been better if you add a better disclaimer that if the demos or whatever the pieces were bought in a proper manner its perfectly legally to do so. Also whether they were actually released pieces or demos. And some english versions were actually released later than the korean version which sort of shows maybe the original was sold to two parties or the demo wasn't released by original artist, which sort of puts your narrative pop to kpop question. Just because its a western song doesn't necessarily mean it has to be the original right. Because of misunderstandings i see lot of people putting down artists and companies in the comments which sends out a wrong message considering how kpop fans are. Also the title highlighting sm is a bit pushing for a negative sense in it itself considering this is something that happens in music industries all around the world even among lot of pop artists.
I have to correct at least two: Kesha only sang the Demo, it was never released but sold to SM. Sarah Connor's Under my Skin and Mirotic came out at the same time, they both bought the rights and agreed that Connor would perform it in the western side of the world and TVXQ in Asia. Some of the other songs were Demos, too, I think. Saara - You Think and maybe 4 Walls (but I am not sure). Call me Daddy was a Demo, too. Anyway, this is not meant as hate but only as additional info! I know that this videos are a lot of work!
You aren’t correcting anything, the maker of this video said right at the beginning they won’t be saying if they were demos, plagiarized, remade etc just songs that are similar to others in all different ways 😂
but Eurhytmics wasn't fucking demo. Copyrights for Sweet dreams had to cost them millions and millions. That song is still on radios which is unbelievable achievement if you ask me
Ngl, when I heard "Under my Skin"/"Mirotic" my jaw dropped. Frankly, as long as SM payed for these songs fairly and included the proper credits in liner notes, their investment has paid off in spades. So many of these songs went from obscurity to iconic.
For Under My Skin, it is not an English song turned into a Korean, the rights were sold to both SM and Sarah Connor around the same time individually under the condition, that Connors version only gets published in North America and Europe and TVXQ's version in Asia. Sarah Connor released her song a bit earlier, that's why a lot of people still think, it's a sample/cover.
@@edurneelurreta5087 i mean this shows that they are talented and hanbin once said u are a yg artist if u can make your own music or something like that
@@sitikhadijahl0122 why are you getting so worked up? I never said anything against any idol, there is absolutely no reason for you to list all those groups. I just found the comment funny because it is true that yg as a company lacks majorly in promoting their artists to their full capability. Why are u pointing fingers without any reason
@@sitikhadijahl0122 listen I don’t have any beef with any artist and it actually is amazing if they are capable of producing their own music and if they are not then it’s the company’s responsibility to take care of it but if you read the comment again it was throwing shade against the company for its mismanagement and how they give few comebacks and all like literally this video and comments, all are talking about the production of the labels and critiquing them, none of them even brought up any artist until you. Anyway sis you can go on think whatever you want and for your satisfaction let’s say I am sorry I was in the wrong and u were absolutely correct. Good day.
Taemin and key both recently said that SM buys and collect songs. They have a lot to choose from when making an album, but the problem is that they lack lyricists to rewrite the song in korean. So , what they buy are english songs.
I just want to point out that buying rights for a song or using samples that are already famous is not a bad thing. If someone buys, then it means the other person agreed to sell. Also, if two artists buy the rights for the same song, in the end they will sound different. Same as when people do covers, you will just like one version better than the other (or maybe both). Plagiarism is the only thing that is very bad.
It’s not bad, it just shows a lack of originality. Beyond the lyrical content there’s very little truly Korean about kpop. It wouldn’t exist as it is without western music.
@@mangarda I do not think it is a lack of originality, as someone who listens to a lot of remixed by DJ, you can buy beats, samples, songs and still be original. For me it means that the person loves the original and wants to share the love for it. Also, I think you are right with your last statement but not in the way you think. The world was "Americanised" music wise. So one way for K-Pop to export themselves was to play the same game. Nowadays, I hear more K-Pop on TV and on the radio, which would have been impossible before.
@@Darkangelike I think that’s true sometimes but I don’t think we can assume that artists imitate the work of other artists out of love or respect. Often it’s just because they want to capture the same audience the previous artist had, or ensure more chart action by releasing a song that already sounds familiar to listeners. And that’s only in the best case scenario where the new artist asked permission, paid, and credited the original artist, which doesn’t always happen in kpop. Your second point, that kpop replicates American trends in order to compete internationally, kind of supports my point lol. Kpops objective is to replicate the success of the western music industry, and to do that they have to compromise originality to an extent. It should be noted that they don’t HAVE to do that; they could worry less about competing with western trends and just produce kpop primarily for domestic consumption. Jpop and Bollywood do this very well; you rarely see them on western charts but they don’t care because they thrive in their own markets.
I guess to SM's defense, they picked a lot of unknown songs (essentially demos) to buy the rights to and made them more famous so it is a win-win all the way around.
some arent demos tho, they were full fledged released songs, theres some q well known like next level was q f&f soundtrack and that franchise is pretty popular
Most of these songs are popular in my country. While Kpop remakes aren't. Maybe just a few from Momoland, Psy, and GG. I guess Psy pretty much introduced a slight of Kpop their.
Some managers/producers sell their artists songs without their permission like what happened with Taylor Swift's case. Anyways at least SM buys it while in my country some artists their pretty much copyright the songs😅.They changed pop songs into reggae but their version of reggae is hella boring😂😂😂.
Just wanna point out that for Mirotic / Under My Skin - they sold the rights for one to promote in the Asian market, the other European, so both are originals and neither is a remake. ✌️
Meh I still think it's scummy, do they not have talented producers to come up with their own music? Kind of insulting themselves by trying to appeal to the west by copying the music...
11:19 Hold on. For Nathalie Makoma, it is the other way around. Girls’ Generation released tell me your wish (genie) in 2009. She bought the rights and released her version called I just wanna dance in 2010.
As a German Hot Summer always has me cracking up when I hear it because the original was SO BIG here 🤣🤣🤣 Funny that there were several other Monrose songs though. And Sarah Connor and even Cinema Bizarre. Very interesting lol
@@puddingcake39 I always knew under my skin by Sarah Connor but I forgot about it and never thought about when listening to mirotic. When I saw the comparison a few weeks ago it absolutely blew my mind. 😅
I always thought Hot Summer was a cover of Hot Winter originally by Chinese/Taiwanese artist Jolin Tsai. There's a great video of F(x) Hot Summer with Tsai's sound track. Jolin Tsai feat. f(x) - Hot S'Winter (Official Music Video)
A lot of Songs sold to SM have English demos. SNSD has a lot of repurposed/remade songs SM bought. I love SNSD’s discography. Imo SM picked great songs and made most of them more iconic. SM bought Press It Demo by Bruno Mars and released Press Your Number for Taemin…it’s so good.
@@solar6120 Press it WAS demo. You can google these things. Kesha recorded demos and they sold it-aka- Run Devil Run. I didn't say all of them were demos. I said "a lot of songs sold to SM have English Demos." I ALSO said SM REMADE a lot of songs. SNSD did a remake of Mercy. It was big but no where as big as the original. It's a fact that SM has bought a lot of songs, demos or fully released songs the artist SOLD. A bunch of songs shown in the video weren't even fully released but SM bought them. AND, I said SM made "most" of them more iconic. Not all of them. No one saying SM made a song more iconic than Jennifer Lopez's releases. Aespa's next level is arguably more known than the original-still a remake but original still very popular. Mirotic is def more iconic than the original.
@@penultimania4295it was a leaked demo, similar situation to Lady Gaga’s Nothing On But The Radio where it was an online demo that got leaked that a lot of people liked but then got sold officially to a different artist (in this case Addison Rae)
Theres a lot of these that arent remakes perse, but samples or interpolations. Others just so happen to use the same splice sample sounds as the aformentioned “original”, where both songs purchased the rights to the splice sound (if it wasnt royalty-free)
Looks like SM bought songs that didn't do well in the western world but put the amazing Kpop Vibe on then and made amazing song.. As a Shinee stan I love all there songs. Where they were originally western songs or not.. Love Hello so much.
This just shows how western music and it's industry has such a huge influence in kpop and it's industry and some kpop fans just don't want to admit that, but it's just the truth.
I COULD NEVRR AGREE MORE LIKE CHILL you don't have to send literal death threats to someone if they state facts the proof is in this video....why do you think these groups/ management teams buy these song? Because they were influenced by it, liked what they heard, and wanted it, and they know that they can make money on it too.
I agree that there's influence (both ways now), but the other side that i think the KPOP fans are trying to point out (maybe not in the best way) is that this video can be a bit misleading. I know that a lot of the songs SM artist remade had had the rights bought so they were able to do it. and the one for Katy Perry and BTS: BTS's album released first, the main album released in 2016 then a repackaged one in Feb 2017, Katy perry's album was released in May 2017. Does this mean there was any copying? who knows. But it does show that this video can (unintentionally) appear misleading. But yes, everyone should just chill, it's all good music :)
the big successes of the 2000s and early 2010's were all American remakes, and the late 2010's-early 2020s are all written by Swedish songwriters who didn't made it to America.
@@babymilksnatcher Bro seeing some credits on kpop songs is crazy, it's like the whole of Scandanavia moved to SK. (especially for red velvet and I guess SM in general, and tbf the same can be said for Swedish writers/producers for US songs)
I mean, I think people would be shocked to find out just how many western songs are remakes/covers or samples other western songs 😂 There's so many iconic songs everyone knows that are actually just covers
@@ramiawilliams638 whitneys music falls under a phenomen of the great american songbook. a time where songwriters and singers where two very distinctly different jobs, and the term singer/songwriter was formed because being both was something categorizing. sinatra, dean martin, etc. all just sang the same few songs. this is a vastly diofferent thing from 80-90-2000-10s era tho. where unique songs were valued and covering was fine and sampling was fine but straight up copying like often times shown in this video was very rare and heavily frowned upon. There is a distinct difference between sampling and doing a korean cover, and prayer in c to mamamoos version is a completly fine version of a sample. Duffys mercy to dacing queen is just straight doing a korean cover if they have the rights its not illegal and totally ok. its just really uncreative and unoriginal and i as an artist myself wouldnt ever dare doing something like that without putting cover in the title

@@voneychiu2828 western music doesnt own every genre. That in itself is a wild take in a discussion about kpop... following the logic of your argument western artist should struggle to mke original music too, that take is like HUH??? What? And coming from a very standardized equalized minimalistic production stile with monotone chordprogressions like that of many many chart hits, going to song like S-Class or other more creative Stray Kids songs (i mostly listen to skz tbh so that my limited expertise on kpop) is a breath of fresh air. Cheaply copying western demos is a certain way to easy money and also garuanteed failure in the music industry, as youll never stand the test of time.
A few of those kpop songs were made before the English songs even came out. For example, wings by BTS came out February of 2017 whilst swish swish by Katy Perry came out in May of 2017. EDIT: i mixed up the dates for outro: wings and interlude: wings, however my point still stands. please stop pointing it out, i am well aware of it by now /lh
when I think of all the american movies reproduced from originally Asian and European movies and series, and famous American singers who have covered European songs for more than a decade, I can't be shocked by this. The influence goes both ways.
yes it goes both ways, but kpop fans think kpop is so original and says ppop, jpop, and other asian pop groups are copying kpop....when kpop is the main thieves in the music industry LOL
Yeah this video did not fact check the release date of these songs at all, so many of these Kpop songs are release before the counter versions. This is very misleading.
To be clear, Run Devil Run had Kesha do vocals for the demo of the song, then they pitched that demo to SM, then Kesha's vocals leaked online, so it wasnt like it was originally a song pitched to Kesha and put on her album first or anything. Definitely not a "remake" in the sense you were referring to at the end of the video. Pretty misleading.
@@Droam006 lmfao isn't it sampling much better than copying a better term? I bet YG ain't better with literally using Kashmir sounds all the freaking time😂 ignorant fools
It's interesting to see that some people are surprised by how much English-language pop has influenced kpop when Lee Soo Man was inspired to create H.O.T after seeing the Backstreet Boys in America, according to a source I don't remember.
Oh wow I didn't know that. I know Lee Soo Man is YG's CEO, right? And he was a member of H.O.T. or am I mistaken? Is it H.O.T. that sort of kickstarted the whole group culture in kpop? Wow it's breaking my brain that the Backstreet Boys were the inspiration for what kickstarted kpop groups as a trend in kpop. All this influence from the West and so many people got into kpop (at least around 2013-2015 when I got into it) because they liked what was different about it compared to western and especially U.S. pop, at least specifically the difference between both at the time. (That's what I got from the youtube comment section anyway and was also what drew me in as well.)
It wasn't the Backstreet Boys, but New Kids on the Block. BSB did not debut in the US until nearly a year after H.O.T. debuted in Korea. Take That may have also played a role.
Because ready or not by shinee was released back in 2010 as a part of their repackaged album of lucifer. While sean Kingston's ready or not was released in 2011
Uh .... "You never walk alone" was released in February 2017. Katy's song was released in May 2017. So, based on your logic, Katy remixed Outro: wings. 4walls is kinda of like a demo for f(x).
A lot of people sampled that song. They forgot to put Nicki Minaj - Truffle Butter (2014). The track that is sampled is called, "What They Say" by Maya Jane Coles.
Technically both songs are sampled. I forget what si hey sampled but I know he song was sampled many times including nicki minaj and the gaga blackpink collabs
"Outro: Wings" is a extended version of BTS' song "Interlude: Wings". It was released on February 13, 2017. Katy Perry - Swish Swish (Official) ft. Nicki Minaj was released on 24.08.2017, half a year after the Outro, sooo... 8:38
I think they hear the English version and then they hear the Korean version and immediately assume that the English version must be the original because why exactly?
BTS Outro Wings came out before Katy Perry Swish Swish. BTS Outro Wings was released February 13, 2017 while Katy Perry’s swish swish was released May 19, 2017.
Yes but look how much they gained from it as well because they did a great job with it and people loved so much their groups. They knew it would work well and be food investments.
new title for this video: snsd's entire discography is western demos (they really made some bops with them though, especially "genie" and "mistake". also, i think "into the new world" isn't a copy of "boys of summer", yeah they sound kinda similar but i don't think that was intended)
Lol no, Bruno Mars version is only a demo that was simply leaked in 2019. The song was originally made by Bruno Mars and The Stereotypes then sold to SM, they're credited on Press Your Number. edit: I'm talking about Press It by Bruno Mars, I just realized you're talking about Please Me which was indeed released in 2019 but it was never mentioned in the video ?.. The comparison is Press It vs Press Your Number.
I was curious for the BTS examples so I looked it up: For autumn leaves the beat is a sample you can buy, plus it was released the same year as the english song. Wings came out in 2016 and swish swish in 2017 so I'm assuming that's a sample beat as well.
Mind got definitely blown! But I don't mind as long as they got these songs legally. And if people decide to check out the original songs it will help those artists too, so all's good :)
I actually love that SM does this, it's truly amazing to hear the demo and the finish product with all SM inputs on the songs! Their producers, lyrics and arrangers are talented af.
These are not Demos. These songs were super popular in Europe and the United States. If you don't know any of these songs, then you know nothing about music. The Maroon 8 song was so popular. Smh. SM was only lucky because back them, there was no social media to call him out. He bought these songs for the Korean market
Some are demos!!! And for like over half of the SNSD/Girls generation songs , they came first. I did fact check it cuz I am biased so to give a far opinion I did look it up.
Agree, I just look it up and “ tell me your wish” by SNSD was released in 2009, while the other some got released in 2010, so SNSD song is the original one.
@@alicenguyen9487 Just because it was released then doesn’t mean it wasn’t written much earlier. Many artists write songs and decided they’re not good enough but then end up releasing them years later. On the Wikipedia page for “tell me your wish” it clearly says it was originally written in English as “I just wanna dance”.
I'm so surprised, there are so many german groups and artists, that usually also no one knows haha (like Monrose, cinema bizarre, sarah connor.. and that's just naming a few) These samples were so interesting :)
The “Press it” from Bruno Mars, that was actually set up to happen and Bruno collaborated with Taemin, the video was even recorded in the USA. Taemin looked up for Bruno who he admires tremendously. Taemin made it a hit reaching Billboard charts. I’m sure Bruno Mars is very proud and cashing🤑🤑
Going to admit, I just played can I guess the Kpop song from the English song for the whole video. I did terribly, this is definitely not my forte. But, there were a bunch of Kpop songs here I want to check out now, so it feels like a win anyway!
BTS' Outro:Wings was released back in Nov 2016 on an album called Wings by BTS. the original title was Interlude:Wings implying that they will release the repackage later
Guys, kpop is an industry. They see an opportunity, they take it. In the end its a plus for all, the original artists and the kpop groups + their labels. It doesn't make the song any less 'original', because well almost noone in the bigger kpop labels produces 100% of their music. It's produced by other people. Also the skill of sm specifically is looking around everywhere, spotting the stuff with the best potential, paying for it and winning straight awards with it by giving it to the right artists. I doubt sm would be part of the big 3 (or big 4 if you consider hybe) without that skill, and that should be appreciated. Shinee in the early days was entirely built on that, and songs like love like oxygen, Juliette and Hello literally got me into kpop. Lucifer was my first kpop song and I wouldn't be a kpop Stan without it. Also, if you thunk about it, like at least 50% of what we consider to be 'classics' are samples, like genie, hello, into the new world, hell even shut down by blackpink is a sample.
When I was young I thought I heard SHINee's Ayo on our local radio but in English and not Shinee singing. I just thought I heard it wrong and went home feeling confused, thank you for solving this mystery for me 🤣💕
this is part of the reason why I like SM music, and people misunderstand it as being 'unoriginal' when they're the one K-pop company that has had the most diverse and evolving sound. they're always looking for things beyond the horizon / pushing the boundaries of their music. what's so great about k-pop imo is the professional teamwork of idols + songwriters + producers + stylists + creative directors etc. rather than one person/group do everything and be like a 'jack of all trades', divide and conquer so that each section is worked on by actual specialists what's better? only seeing one doctor that is decent in all areas e.g. dental, dermatology, etc or seeing multiple doctors each for their specialized fields
This is why I like Twice aka JYP at least they try to make their own music and in their own words best human beings rather than fake best artists. A proud Once SM only do samples and copies music and outright buys them no originality
@@pratikroy227 to each their own. You'd rather listen to subpar works (but "A for effort!" tagged on) than appreciate whats objectively good. Nothing wrong with that. But theres really no fundamental difference between paying your "own" writers to write songs for you (JYP) and paying writers "outside of your network" to write songs for you (SM). To reiterate, SM does not copy songs. They pay writers for their music, just like JYP/YG/etc does for their writers

Oh pls y'all be whining about "make kpop korean".. " This is real kpop " When majority of it is literally taken from western pop lol.. The difference between sm and other agencies here is quite clear in this video, other companies only sample some beats or melody and make their own song from it while SM literally buys the entire songs from western pop artist famous or popular and just translate it in korean and give it their artists, no work done on their own, what ur actually admiring about SM music is literally someone else's music lol
Its no news that sm bought their success, especially in their early days. Theyre very good at it, picking demos and samples. They made every song shine even more, ofc no discredit to the originals, but especially snsd and shinee made some of these songs literal anthems that everybody in the fandom just knows. They know what will work, redo it a bit, write new lyrics, and a legendary song is born. Is it a bit lazy? Yes. Is it genius? Also yes.
not sure if i'd call it "lazy," but i know where you're coming from. if anything, i think it's open-minded/experimental - why imo SM's soundscape across the years is the least stagnant compared to other K-pop companies. They're always on the outlook for something 'different' and 'unexpected', and what better place to find that stuff than outside their own workshops and company walls geniuses exists within and also outside of a company, there's really no benefit to being pretentious and refusing to work with the genius that comes from 'outside' imo
Music is music to me no matter who the singer is. I'm just vibing. Dancing throughout the entirety of the video and singing along to the pop/kpop songs I know the words to fluently.
The fact that i guessed most of the kpop groups correct based on the vibe of the songs even when i didnt know half of both versions of the songs just says enough on how mainly SM picks specific songs that fit the vibe of the group
To bring some nuance to this great overview you've created, similarities between songs could be due to a number of things: - plagiarism; - both songs sampled the same sound/demo; - the unreleased demo leaked online; - the song is a cover of a released song. It's too bad the video doesn't mention which is which, but I can also imagine that would take a lot of research!
The rights of most songs are just purchased. They could have been previously released songs or unreleased demos. They don't have to be "leaked" or plagiarized. That's silly to think leaked demos or plagiarized works comprise any significant portion of the songs. Most of these songs are by nobody songwriters who sell licenses for less than $1000 per song. Also, none of these songs are sampled. They are interpolated (i.e. the tune from the original was recorded by different performers). Interpolation doesn't even require permission. You can pay a mechanical licensing fee and just credit the original songwriter. And that's SONGWRITER, not the original recording artist. Recording artists get none of the licensing royalty if interpolated. About 90% of the recording artists of Western music had nothing to do with the original creative work anyway. They're just performing monkeys of anonymous songwriters, just as is the case with K-pop.
To all the haters in the comment section, it doesn't mean that Kpop companies like SM and other companies bought songs on the Western Music doesn't mean that they own it as their "own" music. if you are looking at the main details, the original composers are still credited for those songs. they only changed the lyrics, and produced the song again, that's it. as still, these companies have their own brands of music in terms of style and quality. we cannot call it as "plagiarized music" as it was paid fair and square.
"plagiarizing" is not the main issue. everyone knows for years that SM is lazy and has sht management and has zero respect for anyone even its own "artists". the only quality that has saved it is money, and thats it. when rather than music it mass produces pretty faces and glittering sets, it deserved to be called out lacking. 🤷
@@jdbalboa3155 i am, like many others. I cant imagine how any sane person would defend or even root for SM which is such a cartoonishly tyrannical company in the industry. i'll just laugh at ur assumption at the end cuz u dont actually know me and ur attempt at a burn/gotcha was pathetic. try again.
Lol there are none. English pop songs set the trends and kpop follows. Just look at how many "rappers" are in kpop groups now. When hip hop was American born.
Thanks for listing mostly 2nd gen songs so I could actually recognize them! I don’t know much about new kpop so I probably wouldn’t have known any of the songs if they were recent 😅
Maybe around that time too, they were still trying to establish their own unique sound. it also requires a lot of talent to pick music that will go together for the artist’s voice, their vibe, and get lyrics that will work.
In terms of number of songs/albums released, I’d understand how SM includes purchasing songs/demos/beats/mixes as a business strategy. They have tons, I hear. A literal vault. Their artists regularly go through them. Some, they wait for the right lyrics for (as a lot are composed with the English language in mind so they can feel off with Korean lyrics). Some, they combine. I was actually delighted to realize a lot of SHINee songs had English counterparts. Does not diminish from their talent and discography. Am sure they made the orig composers more money too. The one who composed the music for Lucifer still tweets about them. SHINee has also released 6 albums in a span of 11 months recently (1 group, 5 solos) so I don’t fault their prolific a$$ for embracing that vault. It is more than okay to “just” be a singer (or just be a rapper or dancer if you can’t sing) same way that it’s okay to try your hand in lyric-writing and composing. Nobody in the Kpop industry can accuse these idols as lacking in talent and dedication just because their companies bought music being sold to release as their own.
You can find the demos for nearly every song of BoA's English album (except for "Eat You Up" or "Energetic"). I love both the demo version of "Obsessed" and BoA's rendition of it.
You're in your studio making tunes and demos, selling it to some random agent without knowing it's a hit song in S.Korea, winning music shows and awards, people singing along like a national anthem
A lot of 2nd Gen is basically western music during the 2000’s - early 2010’s. When I heard Run Devil Run, I was like this definitely sounds like smth meant for lady Gaga or someone with a similar vibe with her.
Well there are lots of Kpop songs during 2 gen that are not sampled of western music though, like all of IU’s songs, a lots of songs from non-SM groups like B.A.P, BEAST/ Highlight, Big Bang, 2NE1, AKMU, Infinite, 2PM …
@@astisukirno2572 They didnt copy, these were either bought rights to produce remakes or they bought the demo of the song like how most SM's song's demo are mostly in English. Correct me if i'm wrong, actually 'press it' was song that bruno mars giving to taemin, sm and the staff mentioning on the making of their mv, the dance choreography also from bruno mars, so thats why 'press it' is one of taemin's favourite songs...
I love sm make all them remake feels the whole different vibes and suit the SM artist so perfectly. I mean its not easy to remake some songs and changed the vibes of the song
There were also the 7 plagiarized songs from Lee Hyroi's 4th album, H-Logic (in light of the lawsuits brought by those songwriters, I'd imagine that most of not all of the original songs in this video were legally licensed by the K-pop artists).
Britney never official released that song only demo leaked BoA was a fan of Britney Spears the song was sold to SM for BoA if you did more reserch you wold have found that out in fact you can still hear Britney's voice in BoA's vers aka BoA's sample was in fact Britney Spears
I know two of these songs came from a danish producer and he has been very vocal saying he sold the song to SM after it not doing that well for the danish artist, but he believed in the song (and you know... money...), so I imagine this is the case for most of these songs, though a couple of them are very obviously also just a simply case of samples
Actually, there are a few "English" songs which are actually also asian, like Miz "Hello Me" which is in Japaneese and some others. Still think they're worth mentioning, but not in the context of them being "English" songs. Also, Yoo Youngjin (who is Korean btw) is a producer for SM and worked with Shinee, so his "Electro" might be a demo version for "Lucifer"
Katy Perry and BTS kinda doesn't make sense, because Swish Swish came out may 2017 and Outro Wings in February 2017 (to be specific, Interlude Wings even came out in October 2016). I guess both only sample another song that wasn't mentioned. Also, have to say, they seem to love german songs, especially SM and especially Monrose.
I'm sure that the majority had legally bought the rights, but what astounds me is the sheer number of western artist doing the same songs or using the same beats/ background music that I've never heard.
@@XueYangbaby Most would be bought from anonymous songwriters who send their music to lots of producing companies all over the world. So they're not really copies, it's just that 2 different companies bought that song and then had it recorded.
@@XueYangbaby also, SM didn't let most of their artists contribute to their own music for quite a while. Those SHINee songs seem to be before SM let Jonghyun and the other members make their own music.
@@XueYangbaby no no no, don't worry at all - these are not the kind of things that lead to plaigiarism. buying and selling demos, as well as remaking songs, is an extremely common and well established practice in the music industry. accusations of plaigiarism only come when the process isn't licensed, but in most if not all of these cases you can be EXTREMELY sure that they were, especially for sm. it is not something unique to kpop at all, either - some examples of famous western songs you might not know were remakes are whitney houston's 'i will always love you', cyndi lauper's 'girls just wanna have fun', and even salt n pepa's 'whatta man', which ioi then re-remade. many of the ones in this video weren't even remakes of released songs, but just unreleased demos, e.g. for press your number, 4 walls, and you think. this means that the songwriters decided to sell the songs to sm and not to release it themselves - there are MANY people who have careers making music without being the ones to release it. it is a fully legal and more importantly NORMAL process. this video is just misleading. if you're worried that this process takes away from their artistic integrity, that's also not something to worry about. it isn't very common for mainstream pop singers anywhere in the world to write their own music, and you don't need to be a songwriter to be a very talented singer, performer, and artist. and while songwriting definitely has its own artistic merit, the difference between an artist performing a song that was composed by songwriters in their own company vs. songs composed elsewhere is negligible. e.g. blackpink are not more artistic than red velvet just because all of their songs were produced by teddy instead of various western artists - they are all just great singers, dancers, and performers who make the best out of (and often have some input in) the songs they are given. which is why, in shinee's case, you actually have a lot more than usual to be proud of in terms of artistic integrity. jonghyun became more or less the only real singer-songwriter in sm because his work was just that amazing even in comparison to all of these thousands of demos sm could pick from, minho has been writing his own raps for ages, and since 'view' they have also been extremely active in the creative process, having chosen the title track themselves and in key's case also completely driving all of the fashion choices. shinee - and most if not all of the other groups here - do NOT plaigiarise. anybody accusing them of doing that simply does not understand what plaigiarism is.
Loved all these songs! and guys please don't spread hate against any of the kpop artists mentioned. Just because these kpop artists weren't the original singers doesn't make their songs any less amazing. Some of them revolutionized Kpop!!! These companies have clearly done all the necessary legal procedures to let their artists sing and own the songs so don't be sad. This is just business.
Amazing compilation. As for a newer one, aespa's "Next Level" is a remake of a song by Aston Wyld from the Fast and Furious movie franchise. As in many other cases, the singing and production of the K-Pop version is much better.
This could have been a good video/ deep dive if you had said what was a demo, sampled or had the same producer. Your video has given KPop and SM a negative image when it is most likely that everyone who needed to got credited did so.
No ill will intended :) That's why I offered the disclaimer at 0:26, as it'd be nearly impossible to track down rights for all of these as someone not in the industry
@@HallyUKPop sadly though i think the way it was worded made everything sound a lot more sus than it is, it's not a great disclaimer :( if you had also specified that the buying and selling of demos/remaking of songs is just a standard practice in any music industry then that would've been much better imo. rn (regardless of what you intended) it lowkey seems like you're calling companies like sm out for some mysterious possibly demos, possibly remakes, possibly plaigiarised process that is somehow abnormal. also yeah, it's a VERY reasonable assumption that most of these songs were properly credited, not mentioning that at all seems quite unfair to me, especially given some people in the comments who have very clearly come away with the wrong idea
that was never a kesha song, she only recorded the guide vocals for the demo. that's why you won't find it under her name on Spotify etc. a LOT of the songs listed here are the same, they're leaked demo versions, never actually released before
Shinee - One for me i knew EXACTLY what song it was before the Shinee version showed up lol so much so that i started singing the Korean lyrics on top of the English ones cause i listened to it THAT MUCH in high school lol
Psy "Daddy" being included because it was obviously a comedic play on "I Got It From My Mama" is kind of funny. That wasn't hidden, it is supposed to make you laugh because you recognize the source material and he does a funny twist on it.
sometimes people mistake it as "same songs" or having the "same arrangements" which makes them sound similar, some of them are covers of the song, so it's sometimes misleading.
@@CossandraCastle cause they are not cover, the company bought the sample or demo from the producers and make a Kpop sing from that. So they pay the people who made the sound fair and square. The other artists may have also done the same thing and just bought the demo to make their own song, either way, neither are the original or cover. Unless, they wrote their own songs. Also, some Kpop songs in here got release before the other version, so whoever make this video are misleading viewers by making them think all of these Kpop songs are copy or released after the other versions, which are not the case.
It's actually pretty common for popular music from one language to be remade in another big market language. It goes both ways. I just pick my preferred version and listen to it and it's not always the original or vice versa.

QUEENS of kpop indeed ALSO 4MINUTE’s VOLUME UP IS A REMAKE TOO??? I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE PRODUCER WAS A GENIUS FOR CREATING SUCH A MASTERPIECE DAMN
I think a lot of these are either demos or more stylistic choices/pastiches - IIRC Run Devil Run was never released on any of Kesha's albums ad was just a demo that was sold to SM. Also another example of a pastiche is Gain's Truth Or Dare, which is a pastiche of Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines (and a better song imo)
I mean half of these artists already pitch demos to k-pop companies so it’s not that strange tbh. Kai’s Rover was a released song, but since Dara already participated in the songwriting camps, she just sold the song. K-pop is a big market so it makes sense

4walls was definitely a demo, thankfully was never released with the terrible original lyrics 😆 a lot of the original songs here are just demos
You aren’t correcting anything, the maker of this video said right at the beginning they won’t be saying if they were demos, plagiarized, remade etc just songs that are similar to others in all different ways 😂

@@mangardait’s kpop… k POP, Korean POP. If pop is created by black ppl then obviously pop won’t ever be Korean other than in language.
@@mangardathen how do you explain the use of traditional Korean cultural elements?? Pretty sure Americans don’t do that
@@Darkangelike I think that’s true sometimes but I don’t think we can assume that artists imitate the work of other artists out of love or respect.

I agreed with your ideas and the owner of this channel should be writing more appropriate content to share.
I think SM just goes online to see what songs are for sale, buys the rights to what they like and has their producers make it an SM song....

Also, if you thunk about it, like at least 50% of what we consider to be 'classics' are samples, like genie, hello, into the new world, hell even shut down by blackpink is a sample.

this is part of the reason why I like SM music, and people misunderstand it as being 'unoriginal' when they're the one K-pop company that has had the most diverse and evolving sound. they're always looking for things beyond the horizon / pushing the boundaries of their music. what's so great about k-pop imo is the professional teamwork of idols + songwriters + producers + stylists + creative directors etc. rather than one person/group do everything and be like a 'jack of all trades', divide and conquer so that each section is worked on by actual specialists
what's better? only seeing one doctor that is decent in all areas e.g. dental, dermatology, etc or seeing multiple doctors each for their specialized fields

I knew there is a lot but this is on another level O_O
They're always on the outlook for something 'different' and 'unexpected', and what better place to find that stuff than outside their own workshops and company walls
geniuses exists within and also outside of a company, there's really no benefit to being pretentious and refusing to work with the genius that comes from 'outside' imo

Unknown to people who only listen to K-Pop and nothing else.
To bring some nuance to this great overview you've created, similarities between songs could be due to a number of things:
- plagiarism;
- both songs sampled the same sound/demo;
- the unreleased demo leaked online;
- the song is a cover of a released song.
Outro: wings came out in 2016, whilst Swish Swish was released in 2017.
Exactly, and never alike
To all the haters in the comment section, it doesn't mean that Kpop companies like SM and other companies bought songs on the Western Music doesn't mean that they own it as their "own" music. if you are looking at the main details, the original composers are still credited for those songs. they only changed the lyrics, and produced the song again, that's it. as still, these companies have their own brands of music in terms of style and quality. we cannot call it as "plagiarized music" as it was paid fair and square.
true
"plagiarizing" is not the main issue. everyone knows for years that SM is lazy and has sht management and has zero respect for anyone even its own "artists". the only quality that has saved it is money, and thats it. when rather than music it mass produces pretty faces and glittering sets, it deserved to be called out lacking. 🤷

I know mostly 4th gen 😅

This could have been a good video/ deep dive if you had said what was a demo, sampled or had the same producer. Your video has given KPop and SM a negative image when it is most likely that everyone who needed to got credited did so.

sometimes people mistake it as "same songs" or having the "same arrangements" which makes them sound similar, some of them are covers of the song, so it's sometimes misleading.
