I'm a gay black man from Deep South who entered Marines at 18 & Honorably Served for 8 years so this story hit close to home.

18:55 Marine Corps has very specific uniform measurements. The uniform inspection shown in movie is exactly how an inspection occurs in real life. The officer was using measuring tape to ensure that belt, tie, Pants, shirts, badges, etc are exactly in the right place according to more than 200+ year old standards and traditions. Marines are often described as being the most crisp cleanest dressers, especially in uniform. Sticking to those uniform traditions is why.

My son was in the military. Two years in the Ceremonial Guard at Arlington and the White House. They were measured to determine if the uniform and medals are correctly placed.

Gabrielle nailed it in this role. To me the colonel gave off a gay vibe [for what ever that's worth].

OMG I saw this at the London film festival and I cried so hard. Yes, the lead character was tough and resilient young man, but boy did he go through it!
I really liked the way he put so much feeling and emotion into the scenes where he had to 'hold it together', like when his mum said she wouldn't accept that part of him, he just stood there, holding back tears and bottling up his emotions... Those scenes had my heart breaking over and over again. Great film! Great review!

Sigh....one another. I spent alot of time with these guys and to this day, I smile when I think of them. And I miss them very much. I always felt welcome more so at their place at that time, than a few heterosexual friends I hung out with at their places. End of story. Love you guys. I don't care what anybody identifies themselves as. It's the personality, are they hateful, egotistical, etc? Truth🐈‍⬛

Based on how you, both agree that the Mother figure has some pronounced 'issues' herself - like even 'high-strung' personality perhaps - was very informative. I mean, it makes me look at the son in a different, positive light. This man had a bigger heart, in that it matters to him that he does get his (flawed) Mother's love, even after his own efforts is successfully accomplished.:)

I can only imagine being black will have its challenges even in 2005 (although better than 1955) but to be black and gay the stigma and challenges of both simultaneously I could not even fathom. I have not seen this movie but its description through you guys reminds me of a classic episode of OG Quantum Leap in which Sam "leaps" into a man whom is presumed to be gay - but it is never 100% been established - in the military in circa 1955 and the huge anti-gay sentiment of the military. However the gay men in the episode were all white there were nevertheless the bigotry they had to endure was so great that many resorted to suicide and Sam was there to prevent that from happening.
It is a good episode because it shows character development of Al who - although not a hardcore anti-gay bigot - vocalized his feelings of uncomfortably around gay men in certain situations and in the beginning agreed with the idea that men fighting in battle wanting to hook up with their fellow soldiers may have an impact on his ability to fight and for the others feeling uncomfortable in combat situations would also have a possible adverse affect on their ability to execute their duties as a soldier and be too distracted by knowing that fact in the back of their mind. Al brought up Sam's sudden legs crossed sitting posture and making tea to drink as signs that the gay part of the guy he leaped into may be influencing those choices. And he said some insensitive anti-gay sort of things.
Then later on through the course of the episode and seeing things from a different perspective as an unseen observer and the mental health of the gay underground community in the Boot Camp Academy and the suicide attempt it caused one of the characters. Al had a change of heart and became an ally of the gay community. You two's focus are primarily films and serialized 10 episode or so TV/Streaming series but if you ever were to branch out and take a look at some episodes of Quantum Leap... the 2022 version or the OG one from 1989-1993 I for one would love to hear the two of you discuss those shows from time to time as well as the ones you already do

I agree about the trailer being a bit different than the film itself based on the review but I still wanted to see it having gay friends in the military. I hope we get more from this director bc he seems like he's has stories for days. Thanks guys.

I watched this movie just because it's one of the very few Marine Corps movies that focuses heavily on boot camp.
They missed the mark by miles.
Literally the only thing they accurately portrayed was at around a half hour in when they show them running in "green on green" wearing "glow belts".
The rest is just basically what someone would imagine boot camp being like for a gay black guy.
Recruits have absolutely no alone time, let alone the space, or freedom, in the squad bay to send someone away to rack alone. The entire purpose of boot camp is to teach you to work as a team regardless of whatever prejudices and biases you have going in.
There are thousands of very recent Marine Corps veterans out in the wild, you'd think they could have consulted at least one of them to give an at least somewhat accurate portrayal of what boot camp is really like.
