In the olden days the grain mill was most often the “Heart” of a community. Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. And hopefully bring back some of that “Heart” and maybe a little more Love.

Wow that’s amazing Virginia did a great job stearing that gas powered draft horse how lucky are they to get so much driving experience so early even had bear helping 😊
That is for sure, thank you! 😆
I sure do love the sound of that creek flowing beside the tater field. Music to my ears. Mmmm! Green beans and taters with lots of black pepper and real butter! Sweet Dreams Char! Great job guys!😊🦋🌷🦋🌷🦋
Thank you Sonya❤️. It is nice to listen to…
What a fast and efficient idea! Donkeys, mules and a horse back in the day but now a motor car 😂 Hope un's get a huge harvest Justro. Taterterian 😁
😆 thanks!!
Awesome thanks Tater Terrian . Glad you gound some time to plant. I was going to this week guess its going to be in-between rain. . Send the girls hugs and love to all. 👍💯❤️🙏
😆.
Hope it works out and you can get done.
I will pass them along, Love yo y’all ❤️
I'm 63. My Daddy was a sheep and wheat farmer, but he never taught me anything about plowing ( or raising sheep). I have learned more from you about what tools are for what, than I ever learned from him. I never knew you had to rip, disc and plow. I won't tell you what I have tried to do..
I hope ai have helped in dome way. Thank you for sharing. Good yo see you here🙂
Looks like y’all got a good system going there my friend. Hope y’all have a great tater harvest. Praying Char gets to feeling better soon. 🙏🏻😇🙌🏻❤️
I hope so too. Thanks Pastor 🙏🏻😇❤️
I used to drive the cub and my grandpa ran the bull tongue when I lived with them. Here in the foothills of NC we had 52 acres of flue cured tobacco and 5 gardens as well as some soybeans here and there. That's how I earned my keep and my school clothes money. I have cultivated probably 100's of miles of soybeans and tobacco when I could barely reach the pedals. I loved seeing this..thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this with us! I enjoyed it
In my opinion they never made a better cultivating tractor than them old cubs. I come an ace of buying one a week or two ago, but the misses informed me that we didn't need another tractor. We are working at a ratio of one tractor per acre already. I couldn't argue but I would've liked to have that old cub.
@@oldnorthstateoutdoors2002 I couldn’t trade my Allis G for 5 cubs. Them cubs wont work on our sloping land. Thank you!
@@metcalfmills5679 I have saw a few of the Allis G's but I have never had the pleasure of using one. I can see how they would be more stable on a hill. I saw an add on Marketplace awhile back and they had like three of them pretty reasonable. I thought about you when I saw them.
Yeah they really work good
I enjoyed that. Blended the old ways with the new "mule". Good to see old Bear in the tater patch. Them eyes gotta be up I like to say they are looking up to the Lord to bless them and make them grow.
Amen, they are. Thank you friend
Dad and his girls working together, don't get no better.
I planted my taters the last week in febuary, here in eastern NC we can get started early. Scratched up some last week.
That’s for sure! I am glad to hear that but I have to admit I an just a little bit jelous😆
Thanks Ron!
I'm a tatertarian too. And darn proud of it.
Hear Hear!
I would have never thought of this and makes quicker work of it. (Well done Virginia.❤️) Great workout Justin and Bear.👏 Hope Char feels better soon.💗 I so love potatoes too!
Thank you Deborah, I hope it helps. I will pass your kindness along
Thank you! I planted taters in my garden today, for the first time ever. Loved your video!
I hope they do great for you. Thank you!
A mule named Honda, and you don't have to adjust its attitude with a 2x4, I like it! You done went and wore out poor little Charlotte. That was cute of her snoozing. Virginia makes a good team driver. Good luck on the tater patch this year Justro!
Most of the time she wears me out, she was puney. Virginia did do a great job. Thanks Rick, we appreciate you!
We’ll done. I can see the effort put into this one. Keep it up! Have a great week you three!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed, hope that you do as well
That looks like a hard job! It’s great that you have your girls to help you out, and even the little dog helping😂. God bless y’all and may you have a wonderful tater harvest🙏🏻. Hope Char is feeling better!😇
Thank you Mrs Robbie. I am thankful. We appreciate y’all, God bless you as well! 🙏🏻❤️😇
Wow what an awesome idea, I can’t wait to see everything growing in y’all’s garden! Virginia and you did a great job working together, I’m sure Virginia will cherish these memories of working with her daddy the rest of her life. I’ve got so many fond memories of my daddy even though he was lost in an accident when I was just about chars age, I miss my daddy so much!!! Thank you both for sharing this and refreshing my memories, please stay safe and always be awesome 😎
I hope they will always remember. Thank you for sharing this with us. So sorry to hear that. ❤️
It won’t be long before Charlotte does the driving!
I sure would use one if I had one. Great helpers you got there. My Gracie helps me alot. Good to see ya brother hope you are well take care.
Thank you for sharing, good to see you as well!
I love the old ways of doing things. No mule, but the Honda mule works great.
Howdy Jackie, I do as well. Yep it is easier to feed. Thank you for sharing.
The more things change the more they stay the same… Good job!
Yep, thank you!
Girls are learning and it’s a gift they will treasure n Rmbr❤
I hope so, thanks Mike!

Glad you enjoyed! Hope all goes well 👍🏻 🥔
Down here in Louisiana I planted my potatoes in late February. But that last late freeze we had in March killed off the tops of them down to the ground. Took my first sweet corn, my fig saplings I planted and most all of my peaches, pears, and apples. Potatoes about half came back, some looking okay others better. I've been planting out my sweet potato slips out for three weeks now.
I'm stuck using my Earthway walking plow to furrow and then recover the rows with the moldboard. It works as long as the sandy soil is nice and light but when the summer heat hits it then it's just a brick. Even a rototiller bounces off. The potato patch is close to an acre but less than half of it is really coming through this year. Real shame, but they might just surprise me. Last year it didn't rain the whole month of May which is when they usually finish up and put their size in. We had plenty of rain this year and we put cow manure, leaves and coffee grounds by the ton out to compost in it last fall.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Have you tried cover crop, ground cover? Keeping the sun off can be a big help..
@@metcalfmills5679 Even with cover the ground turns to a brick. Even in the woods under tree cover. But the potato patch isn’t fenced so anything other than potatoes going in it gets mowed by the deer.
And to be fair when it gets July through September you aren’t getting much but the most hardy drought tolerant crops. Even okra and cowpeas struggle that time of year. So you have to plant early and maybe you can get some late if there is some rain come September or very late July. At least these last few years, it’s been months long droughts with over 100+ days and nights well into the 80s until midnight to 2 am.
Virginia is doing a fantastic job backing that utv
Yes she is, she cut her teeth on a steering wheel! Thank you!
Nice team work! Virginia sure is growing up! Hope Char feels better soon. I'm about to dig my potatoes down here in South Georgia. Can't wait to cook up some fresh Yukon Golds.
Thanks Roger! That sounds real good!
Bear looked like he was a top tater inspector 😂 just makin sure y’all did it rite 😂
Nothing gets past him😆
Great team just a woo and no gee ha
Yes 😆
Good video
Thanks Mike!
I hear that Wu but no gee and haw, that another way to get ur done. Virginia makes some nice straight rows.
That us for sure, ha ha! Thanks Noble
Nothing harder in the garden to me than planting taters but there’s nothing better to me than new taters out of the garden
We are a little late, I like to plant middle of April. That is for sure, what a treat. Thank you Danny
@@metcalfmills5679 my grandpa always said Good Friday is tater planting day
Yes that about when I like to plant. We may not have none by father’s day like we always do..
GREAT JOB ,, U COULDN'T DO IT WITHOUT THE 2 BOSS LADIES ❤
I wouldn’t want to try it ❤️, thanks Charlie!
We got an old plow here at the house we bought. It’s odd looking. Maybe for the steep hillsides here in east tn ?
Most likely so, thank you for sharing
We used to do this with a mule
Yep, us too. Thank you for sharing
Curious. What boots do you wear? They look absolutely comfy.
They are Red Wings, thank you!
Nice field of taters. Did you call that tool a duck plow? Where did you get it? Blessings
I have a video with the link, bless you as well. I will put it down in the description..
That’s gettin her done!! Do you still have the tractors?? Are your energy levels back again?
Yes I do. Oh yes, feeling great these days. Thank you
I have never seen that breed of mule before.
They are a very expensive breed, but they don’t eat much! Hope you are well buddy
I bet Bear is eating for some fries! Looks good. Do you do any fertilizer?
Yeah he knows he won’t get any after there’re cooked! Yes I will later. They won’t make if they don’t get a little
Aww darn! I’ll send him some just kidding!
😆
Gardening is hard if you do it rite Can I get a amen on that jetro
I enjoy it so much it is more pleasurable to me than hard to do. It is a lot of work but mind set is everything. Ok, amen 😆
Why not just use the hand plow instead of the cart-pulled plow in the beginning?
Did they drive straight?
Pretty straight Jeff!
I like to have the plow
Link in description
That will heat ya😅. 3:50
Yes 😆
You didn't teach them Gee and Ha?
No room for it😆
Gee Haw
Whammy-Diddle
Make you some taller handles to save your back !!!
They will break your ribs if you don’t stay out of the way…shorter may be better..😆
Y
You bring joy to my heart with each of your video's. This one is especially nice the girls & Bear. What a great ideal to use your Honda! I know you will be tired after that work out.
I am glad that you enjoy what we share. I was a little bit😆. Thank you Brenda
Does the Wiener dog have a job or does he just provide a good-long belly for rubbin'?
He will hunt some varmints, but mostly a pet…😆
What happened to your girlfriend? Lol The old allis?
Saving her for cultivating 😆❤️
