In this video Musical Theatre Coach Marc Daniel Patrick discusses Shrek The Musical and the song Who I’d Be. With Brian D’arcy James, Sutton Foster and Daniel Breaker.
Every single song from this musical is an actual BANGER!! I hate how underrated it is!😩
Shrek is an AMAZING and hilarious musical. I love it so much.
The musical is great
Sutton Foster's rendition of Morning Person is my second favorite song from Shrek. She deserves praise for that one, too.
Marc is the kind of guy that says “let me rewind a little bit” and then clicks ten minutes back. Just kidding, love your work Marc!
I love the level of analysis in this one, love when he goes back!
HAHA. Its so true. But once I've gone back, I just have to let it play, why try and fix.
@@MarcDanielPatrick haha yeah I’m the same way
Hey Marc, good stuff here!
We actually did this production earlier this year. I was the musical director and wrote the Spanish adaptation/translation. I had seen a couple of translations for this number but they got the verb wrong. They translated it as "who I would want to be" and to me that's a completely different song. The reason I mention this is because that got me to analyse profoundly this piece and why it was this verb. "Who I'd be" is so good is because we have learned throughout the whole act 1 about why Shrek is the way he is, his parents told him the big bright beautiful world exists but it isn't for him, and he's been living this whole time by himself. Donkey is the first character that didn't react to the fact that he's an ogre, begrudgingly Shrek accepts going on the journey together, and Donkey being the stubborn and oblivious donkey that he is, but also a sensitive friend gets Shrek to tear that wall down and be open and vulnerable. Who I'd Be becomes this big bright beautiful world that Shrek in fact has thought and yearned about. The he sings about the exact situation that just happened when he rescued the princess, where she also reacted about him being an ogre, but in this case he gets to remove the helmet and the story continues differently, and that's why we need that beat; that's why that beat is important. It's like a gasp. But alas this big bright beautiful world is not for him. And that's why on that part he goes down the melody not up. It has to. It reprises what his parents told him, not for him. It has to deflate. It's almost within reach but it really isn't, everything just vanishes in that moment.
And that harmony at the end, Fiona is actually one third above Shrek. The thing is, the chord their doing is on a second inversion, and Shrek has the main melody and the base of the chord, so it has to be like that. Fiona is one third above, and Donkey is one fourth below, Shrek has to be in the middle, like he's in the middle of this situation.
Anyway, that's my analysis.
Thanks for sharing!
I love this show it’s so underrated but the problem is everyone went into it thinking it was going to be exactly the same as the movie and why would it, this is definitely the best song
My absolute favorite song from Shrek. And Brian D’Arcy James is... he’s fantastic
Yeah. Why the F is he the only cast member of Smash that got DUBBED?????? It's not like Nick Jonas or Angelica Houston OR Debra Messing were fantastic or anything (my harsh opinion)
I get chills with that ending harmony, just so good. Do something from next to normal, Brian was amazing in that too!
That clash on "That's How" is sooo clean, just makes the end even so much more effective !
watching this on netflix was my first time seeing a broadway production (I'm chilean lol we don't get many of these) and it blew me away- I started it with no expectations but now it's the sole reason I'm trying to watch more musicals :')
YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY CHECK OUT FALSETTOS. It has a pro shot and it is AMAZING.
@@rainbowandre9580 my only problem is that it doesn't have subs :( believe me, it's the only reason I've only ever seen shrek the musical and hamilton (sure, I understand english, but trying to catch the lyrics on the first try, while getting distracted by the music and trying not to lose sight of the stage movement is... challenging for me lol)
I'll give it a try anyway 👀
@@Loesgane I have a version with English and Spanish subtitles 👀
@Loreto Espinoza you would like Beetlejuice, Book of Mormon, Hairspray, they all have that fun vibe to them. Idk what’s available to you but yeah. Falsettos has an amazing opening song and then it’s kinda just fine but that’s only my opinion
@@yourfavoriteinternetyoda8422 what do you mean by "just fine"? Falsettos is my favorite musical. I'm obsessed. It's the best thing ever. Btw I've already watched every musical you mentioned
Ok, since I'm watching ... I get what you mean about the beat. But I find it perfect, too. He's already been through that moment where it went wrong. Of course he'd quickly cover it up with how he wished it could have gone :P
Oh, I absolutely agree with you! He’s literally remembering how it actually went vs how he wanted it to go and that hits so differently. That beat had no right to be that perfectly placed.
Funnily enough, this is the first song I ever cried to
I feel like, with the song isolated like this, lengthening the beat makes sense from an acting standpoint, but I found it to be more impactful at how it's just *slightly* off enough to let you reflect before hitting you with the rest of the song so soon after. The way Brian hesitates with that tone of triumph is just so powerful to me.
This was my high school musical for my senior year. I was Baby Bear, a Duloqian, and a dancing rat, so this musical has a special place in my heart 💖 every time I listen to the soundtrack on spotify, I just remember not only performing it, but seeing it on Netflix and being blown away! The musical develops things that the movie doesn't, and honestly you can really only compare the two productions in basic storyline and some character designs in my opinion. The approaches to the story are different and I love it! What an incredible musical 🥰
Shrek surprised and delighted me as a musical. I had the opportunity to see it put on by a local group and thought it was wonderful. I ended up going a second time with my daughter (six at the time) and wish I had gone a third because I spent so much of that show watching her reaction. Despite its giant original budget, I think Shrek is one of those musicals that's perfect for community theatre groups. There's a lot of room to play, and a lot of opportunities to showcase creative talent, plus it's an easy show to market and will definitely put bums in seats.
Shrek is one of my favorite musicals. In fact, I prefer it over the movies.
im obsessed with this musical lol i love it! its so underated
I've been asking him for months on this song . tHANK YOU!!!!
My three year old is currently obsessed with all the Shrek movies and the musical. I fall more and more with the musical every time I watch it or listen to the soundtrack in the car. I had to get all the CD soundtracks to have in the car bc he loves the music from all of them, too. The only problem is he says “Don’t sing it, mommy” when I start singing along with it. Except for Donkey’s song “Don’t Let Me Go” bc I sang it to him at karaoke and I guess that one is okay for me to sing.
Marc when I sing it with them I do the higher harmony 😃
Such an all star cast! I didn't realize they sunk 25 million into it. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why it got filmed, for added revenue. Regardless, I'm glad they did and wished all musicals were professionally filmed. Can you IMAGINE?!
I hope you react to more of the songs from this musical!
I’ve been waiting for this reaction for sooo long!! Not only does he do such a good job with making each action mean something and every look have purpose but it’s all in that ridiculous costume which just adds to how impressive it is! Love your reactions keep it up :)
This is the song that got me into musical theatre. The power, the emotion, the everything. Will always be my favourite song.
OMG OMG OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COVERING THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven't even gotten to the video itself yet but THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to see a reaction to the original cast of Aida! Heather Headley, Adam Pascal, and Sherie Rene Scott are chef's kiss perfection...
I completely agree that it would have been better to go up on world on the "big bright beautiful world" phrase. It would have lent a sense of forward motion and hope that made the drop back to the original melody of "but not for me" feel even darker.
Please react to Bo Burnham "Welcome to the Internet" next!!
I was part of a very-amateur community theatre production of this a couple of years ago. It’s a ton of fun to do, and a TON of work! But so, so rewarding.
I wonder if the relative lack of success stemmed from the new and unfamiliar music. I was a bit surprised by that when I started learning the show.
So many costume changes for the ensemble! The wigs alone - wow! This is an amazing show, and I love that amateur groups can do it as well as professional theatres!
I absolutely adore this show, it's in my top five for sure. I cry several times every time I see it! I think one of the problems it has, though, is just a bit of uneven tone. You have these show-stopping numbers like Who I'd Be and When Words Fail, that are just dripping with heart. You've got great storytelling, like in This is Our Story and Build a Wall. Freak Flag is a phenomenal number that gets me every time! But then you have some very silly songs (or verses of songs) that don't really add much. I'm looking at Donkey's road trip song, Donkey Pot Pie, and What's Up, Duloc - I think all of these could have used some more work to really come together. Not to mention the end of Got You Beat, but I recognize the need for some Ogre humor in there! Of course this is just my opinion, I don't want to step on anyone's toes! But I think that maybe that was another reason for the struggle Shrek had in the beginning - people maybe weren't sure who the target audience was?
This is by far my favorite musical. Gives me chills every single time
My daughters were in a Shrek Jr production. The young man who played Shrek is graduating from Emerson College this year I think. Every single time he performed this song, I was moved to tears. So lucky to watch him.
This song is in my audition book! When I’m in good voice (which is rare) I take it up to the G at the end. There is a recording somewhere on UA-cam of Brian going up to that G as well
I also love Brian D'arcy James in Something Rotten!
There’s an ending with Donkey moving up to Eb, Shrek moving up to G, and Fiona on a Bb and it sounds so much better
I literally ended on here searching for a reaction to this song to find out if my thoughts on that last note were off!!
The wide range of their voices set up a broader(?) final chord, especially considering how the song I Know It's Today ended with Sutton opting up as she did
I preformed this for a concert
This is my favorite song from the musical and makes me cry everytime! Poor Shrek just wanted acceptance and to not be judged by what he looked like.
Im not ashamed to say this is my favorite musical
This musical took me by surprise! I found it one day, and thought, hey I like the first Shrek movie, let's try this. And I LOVED it!
I auditioned for a role using this song. Marc, I believe he turned and smiled because in that moment when he removes his helmet, remember at that moment in his lines, he's not himself, he's a hero. So when he turns and smile he wouldn't be an ogre, he'd be a proud hero that gets the girl and now he's taking his breath before he continues. That's the way I interpreted it and the way I use that break.
YESSS I JUST GOT INTO THIS MUSICAL!!!
Thank you thank you thank you for covering this song. ❤
As a born and raised Canadian, I have never related more to a video intro than this! Thank you for getting through our crazy weather to produce this quality content! 😅🥰
My first exposure to this musical was when the West End production performed on Britain's Got Talent. One of the judges (Amanda Holden) was Fiona. I fell in love with it there and then! I heard and sang the songs so many times that even now, after years of not listening to the songs, I still remember every lyric and word spoken ^^ When I saw it that it was on Netflix, I watched it so many times I've lost count. Unfortunately, they removed it from Netflix here in Portugal 😭 but I've been listening to the soundtrack a lot more lately 😁
I moonlighted as a stage hand after college and got to help load in this show at the 5th Ave for the preview in Seattle, the dragon pieces were amazing! I used my paycheck to buy a rush ticket and got to see it with the original cast before it left. I didn't even know who Sutton Foster *was* at the time, but I loved every minute of the show!
This song is SO AMAZING!
Shrek is an amazing musical. It’s so underrated. It makes me sad how much hate it gets. It needs to come back
I loved your reactions and comments about it!! My respects to all the cast of Shrek!!!
He had some good thoughts and a good ear to hear the blandness of the last note. I always will sing that last note a 3rd above!! It sounds so much better to me that way. Lolol good ear!! Props to you.
Love this musical.
Please react to a number from the In the Heights movie, like "Paciencia Y Fe" - it was so moving, and the fact that she 's OBC just makes it so much better!
I feel you about the heat. Down in Seattle it’s been awful! Also, I had no idea this was a musical that existed. 😲 -10 points to my musical fan cred.
Plz do something hadestown next!!
Love this show ❤️
From Alberta Canada . I feel your pain.
The way that the light+temperature melt Marc it’s just what I came for
Ha, oh thanks. lol
That third up is in the score when you get it and actually is sung in the “off-Broadway” version of the song. Think they played it safe.
I think you should react to Quentin Earl Derringtons performance of it he makes some interesting choices and in my opinion did some pretty good acting work.
Never seen it, I'll go find it though. Thanks!
YESSSSSS
I love this musical it's really good do I know it's today and story of my life
So. Good wish I could have seen the entire show
I think of netflix or Disney it’s on there
It’s on UA-cam, just look up Shrek the Musical
I would love to be in west end shows but need to learn where and how to get singing lessons
I’d like to see a reaction to the song Story of my life. It’s one of my favorite songs in the musical.
Love the show
Another show that was cruelly stopped because of the pandemic was Prince of Egypt. Please please please celebrate with When You Believe.
Love your channel
oof saying Brian doesn't have a huge range....I'd direct you towards Burrs in the Wild Party...Easy A flat in there
Or when he sang Pity the Child... ua-cam.com/video/ME6BD-XYAKQ/v-deo.html
Someone might have already said this in a previous comment, but Sutton is up the third - it’s just not up in the mix
It’s definitely there, just subtle
❤
Who would I be? I’d be a Broadway star!
On the cast recording Sutton takes the 5th at the end. I believe it’s a Bb
It just doesn't sound high enough. No? Was it just me?
@@MarcDanielPatrick I have the sheet music for this song and Daniel is on the root, Brian is on the 3rd and Sutton is on the 5th. But I agree. I think Sutton should go up to the Eb at the end on the last measure
Can you react to songs some Something Rotten? I always thought it's underrated. There's so many fun songs and references in that show!
But do you have a fan?! Here in TX the only way I can cope with the heat is with a cooling towel around my neck & a fan running 100% of the time!
you should react to high school musical the musical the series. they have been doing songs from beauty and the beast my personal favorites so far have been “home” by julia lester and “if i can’t love her” by roman banks
Who else just now sung that last missing note in the harmony? It does sound better that way, I think :)
Haha.
Please do a reaction to Brian in Titanic
This gave me chills. I love the musical Shrek and saw the national tour of it. It is an underrated musical--and oh so funny with moments like this that can bring tears to your eyes. I adore Brian d'Arcy James and would love to see a reaction to him in the rehearsal for the concert of Titanic: ua-cam.com/video/QzpRYtVk9Vk/v-deo.html
BDJ balances the hope and dream vs the heart breaking reality so beautifully
Who is that Amazing Female Singer you had on the beginning of the video? Can you link her channel so we can Subscribe to her too?
If you were to look at Lord farquaad do things are looking up in dolock
listen this has nothing to do with this video but I didn't know how else to contact you with this emergency that only you can satisfyingly address for me (and probably other people). Bo Burham released a special on Netflix called Inside and people are flipping out because he's a standup comedian and they don't understand the format and why it's so amazing ... but to me it is clear; it is a MUSICAL lol. And a brilliant one. About reckoning with his real self versus his performer-self, and casting the Internet as the villain keeping them from fully integrating. So my heart would literally burst if you watched it and covered some of it here; your reactions and analyses are so valuable, and I'd love your take on why All Eyes on Me is making grown gamer dudes burst into tears during their live reactions (bahahahha the power of a good musical). ANYWAY I hope you'll take this as how wonderful I think you are at what you do, and not just co-opting your Shrek video to ask you to make content about Bo Burnham's musical lolllll okay bye thanks Marc!
Yea, I've been seeing a lot of him pop up lately and wasnt sure what to make of it. I'll give it a try!
Can we take a look at Heather's? I would love te hear your wisdom😁
You also can do Shrek the musical without looking at Lord farquaad
But I don't recommend it he's one of the best parts of the show
i’m here once again to ask for hadestown reactions plss
Haha., Its coming I promise.
Shrek gets so much hate and it makes me sad. Shrek the musical is way better than the movie. It gives the characters so much more depth, like shrek for instance, he’s just seen as a big scary ogre in the movie but in the musical we see he had a bad childhood and actually wants to be the hero. It had so many great meanings to it. About acceptance, and that beauty isn’t just the outside…it is silly musical but it’s funny has and has great meanings. And great songs :)
Jjjm
This song is some of the best writing that I've seen from stage adaptations of such movies. There are a few other songs that I appreciate, but I honestly didn't enjoy the musical outside of those numbers. I'm not saying it's a horrible show, I just don't have much appreciation for it and many feel similarly.
P.S. I'm sure I saw Shrek when it first came out, but I was a teeny human then so I have practically no recollection of it. Point is, I'm disappointed by this show but not because I compare it to the movie.
Okay?
She is oki but not that good lost of girls sing the same as here so I am not shock but good job
