So awesome that you found an original black painted model! I have a chrome plated Canon P and I've been shooting it so much on my channel that the brass is starting to show underneath haha
Without even asking, a box came to me in the 1980's. An uncle had died, who I only met once while on the east coast in the Army around 1971. He used to be one of the production vice presidents of publicity for Paramount in the 50's and 60's. Later, he ran a chain of theaters on the east coast. I think my film interest then was old Universal horror movies and of course 2001. In this box was the first Contax 35mm model, which this Canon reminds me off, it's leather case, and a 4x5 speed graphic in it's case with a drawer loaded with flash bulbs. The Contax had a curtain shutter that was iffy. Had it for about ten years, then sold it to buy a Yamaha Rev 7 reverb rack mount. What a thing to get in the mail.
One of the holy grail cameras that I've been looking for is a gray Voigtlander Bessa L. I, unfortunately, found one on Ebay a while back but was unable to buy one before it was sold. I love LTM cameras, owning two Canon P's but would love to acquire the gray Bessa L one day...
Congrats on your on your grail..nice to see a "real one"... I also saw you are using the Ollsen dot on the rangefinder to help out the rangefinder contrast..
JVC, that is an unusual find!, I've watched (& subscribed to your channel ) over many episodes & have found them to be very informative. I possess a 'P' w/50mm f1.4 lens, (which was gifted to me) in excellent working condition. I team it up with a very small Keks EM-01 shoe mount light meter. I sourced a 48>49 step up ring to use my collection of 49mm filters & lens hood. It still has the original leather case, again in excellent condition, (I tend to use the half case for protection.) It's my 'Japanese Leica'! May I respectfully point out that the fixed framelines are 35/50/100 & the locking device on the baseplate was used to 'lock & unlock' dedicated Canon reloadable cassettes. May you enjoy your photographic forays! Stephen, (from Australia).
That's a really nice user combo. The 50mm 1.4 is exceptional. And, stepping everythiog up from 48mm to 49mm goes from never finding what you want to both common and inexpensive. I've been looking at add-on little (modern) meters to replace the two selenium Canons I have (one dead the other ??) I've had for years. Like the KEKS but haven't gotten it yet. It looks like it would be a very clean looking fit.
Try finding a black paint Canon FX ...I got one several years ago off of the internet. Have not seen another for sale since then. According to Wikipedia there were only two known examples until I found another. My camera is featured on Camerapedia via Flickr. That’s a beautiful canon P in black paint...don’t even think about re-painting it! best regards, G
Hello sir, I love your videos, they are very informative. I have a question. Could you tell me how much a Canon P Black costs in Japan? I don't need one in mint condition, but rather a used one like the one in your video, but one that works. Thank you for your help.
Great and very informative. I have a beautiful chrome plated Canon P in great working condition. Very enjoyable to use. Howver the frame counter on mine stopped resetting to 0 when I open backdoor. I have seen a good video on how to remove the top cover but I have no idea what to do next to fix the counter mechanism. So I think I wont even try for now and am just try to remember or write down the frame count. Thanks for the video and your channel! I just hit the subscribe.
In Japanese, the pronunciation is changed to "reika" (ray-ka) which would form the habit of pronouncing it like "lay-ka". I don't think he's being stubborn at all haha! I think it's just a habit formed by living in a country a different primary language - I'm sure the camera stores where he gets his stock would have Japanese-speaking owners :)
Apart from the dedicated collector who must have one of everything, I've never understood the attraction of black body cameras. The Canon P is neither rare nor blessed with the best combination of features, so as a owner of many Canon RF bodies and lenses, I've never bothered with a P. This one is truly ugly, and you cannot have it repainted, or it looses its cache as a "black body".It's probably different in Japan, but it is practically impossible to get anyone to work on the shutter is the P, 7 and 7s in the US. Yes, you can raise the tension on the shutter to repair the slow running fast speeds, but many have reached their limit of adjustment and need a new spring replacement, which isn't happening. That why my user is a VIT with its older shutter, rather than my 7 or 7Sz.

My dad was a photojournalist. I have 3 of those black paint Canon Ps and some Nikon S rangefinders and Leica Ms.
YES WITH A DREAM LENS ACCOMPANIED ON IT
Looking to get one of these cameras myself. Don't mind having one to clean up as it'll keep the price lower when I go to buy it.
Great video 👍🏻

😆 the most important element here is lens!
Lovely! I just acquired one P that on each roll the frame counter automatically resets. Any idea if the mechanism is easy to fix? Thanks!
I enjoy my Canon P very much. Will you be leaving that camera in its raw worn state or will you be having it repainted?
i need that lens!!
Nice seamaster!
Hi, do you still keep this camera or have you sold it already?
That nikon loos cool
Too bad my canon P ,canon 7s and Vi-L all had faded rangefinder patches , they really don't age as well as the ones on previous models
Unless I missed it, is the camera on your site ?
Preschool brawl? And you didn’t photograph it?!
That thing looks pretty rough.
Cool presentation about Canon P. My only complaint about his presentations is his stubborn insistence on pronouncing Leica as Leeka......

Old cameras all rare n shit.

I actually think it looks absolutely amazing haha. Yeah, it's rough, but it's beautiful
