BATTLING A MASSIVE SNOWSTORM and BELOW ZERO WEATHER

  • As a nice welcome back from vacation I get to deal with 10-16" of snow and -22 degree weather. Snow plows break, trucks wont start and buildings collapse.

iowANFarmer, Ben Van Roekel, is a 2nd generation farmer in southern Iowa. His goal on UA-cam is to showcase what young farmers have to offer to the agricultural community. He hopes to give the general public a glimpse into what life is like on an American corn, soybean, and hay operation. The channel will focus on farming equipment, repairs, precision ag, and daily operations on the farm. Join him in his daily trials and tribulations in the changing agricultural environment.

In my tiny town I plow a church a food pantry and a dozen driveways. 3 pay...it's funny the ones who have money give zero, but the who can't afford want to pay me but I won't except it. You will see the curtains move as they peek out and when you leave and look behind you they are leaving to go to town to buy a $8 coffee.

I lived about a mile from town
I did many driveways, mostly friends and seniors. They were for the most part free. Of course when diesel was 50¢ a gallon and my 560 cost $ 2500
If I still had my health and my tractor I would be doing it.
It was always enjoyable and rewarding.

I was raised in northern Pennsylvania. When I was 12 Y.O, I was chosen to be the dedicated snow plow operator on the farm. We used to get 2-3 feet of snow every year. I loved it.We had 2 locations to move snow. My dads farm and my grandfathers farm next door. I would be out all day and some nights moving snow to make way for the Milk trucks. I loved the job. That was back in the late 60s', and early 70s'. That was the awesome part of living in the country.

Don’t mind moving snow if you know where the driveway is. We have a tractor mounted snowblower that we really like and I like it even better when we don’t have to use it. Here in western Wisconsin we only have about 3” on the ground so far. 2:58

I learned a trick a long time ago plowing with a guy in his seventies. Use more of a "V" pattern taking a bite or two on the left side, pushing it off the side and then to the right side. As you get close to the edge lift your plow a foot as to not tear up the grass. Unfortunately every time you try to plow through the middle when it's this deep and heavy, you're going to break stuff. A lesson I had to learn the hard way several years, until he showed me his trick. I broke a whole lot less plow parts and springs when I used my brain and not just brute force.
    Hope that helps.

Who would pay someone $10 for snowremoval? I surely understand being poor. . . But that's a freaking insult. I were you i would feel more appreciated / compensated it the offered you home cooked food or bake goods something that actually a level of appreciation. This is the 1st video of yours i have seen. Thank you for being a good human. I don't know if you have heard of that individual God. . . His pronoun are not defined.... but God Bless you brother!

ZERO disrespect intended here, but I think that you're a poor businessman when it comes to snow removal, but a GOOD PERSON, if that makes sense. I'm a snow removal contractor, and I don't do what I do for "beer money" if that makes sense, and with your machine, I wish that you wouldn't either. What is that, an M-5 or M-6? Those aren't cheap machines, and I'd like to see you be able to earn your keep with it when doing snow removal. But you could also do better if you had a push box on it vs. a blade. Anyway, I wish you the best! And much respect to you and all farmers.

I get what you’re saying here 100% and if there was a snow removal contractor out here in our rural area, I would let them do it but there isn’t. My busiest year of moving snow was when I had to go out and do it 4 times. How’s a contractor going to make a living doing that?
