Litjoy has had a subscription service for awhile. They just redid their book subscription service. They retired their magical crate and then rebranded/renamed their book subscription. Before it was called YA crate and they had themes for each box and didnt get a choice of what book or items you got. Now it is TBR and you get to chose 1 of 2 books, with the possibility to add the other book to your box as an add on. Then you can pick 1 or both items from each level if depending on which book/item subscription you pick. Plus you can have add ons as well.
For people in the UK that are hoping to get some special editions second-hand, Vinted is an amazing option. I’ve perused Fairyloot editions, and Illumicrate books on there that aren’t ridiculously marked up. It’s not just clothes on there. I bought the Fairyloot editions of The Diviners series on there for a very reasonable price. You might even be lucky and find a unicorn in Oxfam books. Honestly. There have been special editions of books in my local Oxfam bookshop.
Special Editions are always fantastic to look at. For me though, I am happy as long as most of my shelf is hardcover editions because for me they are easier to shelve and unshelve (except manga, don't usually get a choice with format for those).
The Broken Binding is TOP TIER with their editions, I know their waitlist for Tier 1 sub is really long (almost 5 years last I heard) but they just created Tier 2 so more people can get their hands on their editions which is so fantastic.
I love special editions! I am the crazy person that buys special editions of books that I haven't even read yet 😅. But they are usually books I have a strong feeling I will like. I recently pulled the trigger on the Red Rising Subterranean Press books (which I have read) and will cherish them forever! Options mentioned and others to look into for special editions: - Midworld Press - Subterranean Press - Grim Oak Press - Suntup Editions - Centipede Press - Lyra's Books - Amaranthine Books - Curious King - Wraithmark (usually through Kickstarter)
Great info. Thanks. I own editions put out by both The Folio Society and Easton Press and I can confirm that both companies put out very high quality books (leather, sewn bindings, acid neutral paper, etc.).
The Folio Society editions of Howl's Moving Castle and The Neverending Story are on my long term wish list. They're so beautiful but dropping that much on a single book is.....difficult for me to justify lol. Thank you for all of these websites! I have so many newsletters to go subscribe to
My go to is Litjoy because of a) my lunacorn membership and they sell their stuff at the same time consistently so it is hard to miss them and b) it is the company that got me into special editions. I think for sprayed edges, I want to learn to do that myself because I don’t want to spend 30 dollars just for sprayed edges. Oh and Etsy is a good place for dust jackets and custom books and the prices vary. I love my Caraval ones that I got for 45 dollars before shipping. They are beautiful and you can see the love the seller put into it. I had a couple of successful purchases on Mercari, but I can see how not every seller is trustworthy. You can’t tell. What I try to do is read the reviews and judge by the quantity first (ie. 400 reviews) and how many consistently give good reviews.
I have the Folio Society Hobbit/LotR but the one you showed, not the special limited edition from a couple of years ago, now in the £1000s used! However I habe the Folio Society Gormenghast trilogy on order - a great first two books (the third is bad) and a tealky nice illustrated edition.
I've sold a couple of my Fairyloot editions and other books through Mercari. Used it the most in 2020/21, and I always made sure my stuff was shipped next day or 2 after it was purchased. Mercari actually sends notifications to the seller to ship it within 3 days.. I do like the safety measures in place of Mercari not letting the transaction go through if you never get the item. I've heard WAY to many horror stories of Ebay for both buyers and sellers. Sad that the person couldn't be honest with you. Definitely using Pango from now on though, now that it's around.
Folio Society is not all super expensive editions. They do do some like that but you can also get other books for around £30-40 UK. In addition I wouldn't put them in the newsletter category because many of their books are available to buy for years, it's only the very limited release ones which can sell out quickly. In the UK at least it's often possible to find older Folio editions second hand for a decent price - the company has been going a long time. Older ones may not have as many illustrations or other features as modern editions but they are generally in a slipcase.
I used to be subscribed to you're channel as Jay roc on my old comic channel but started collecting manga & started a new channel & you're channel just popped up on my home page , good to see you again
The Broken Binding is my go-to. I've got their editions of Faithful and the Fallen (John Gwynne), The Licanius Trilogy (James Islington), The Malevolent Seven (Sebastian de Castell), Of Blood and Fire (Ryan Cahill), Darkwater Legacy 1 & 2 (Chris Wooding), and the Children of Time Trilogy (Adrian Tchaikovsky). I'm not a subscriber. I just hope there's still some left over for a general sale. I discovered them too late, so I had to get a few of these second-hand, but since I've been paying attention, I've been able to grab what I want.
I don't have as many of the subscription series as you do, but they are also my go to for special editions. I own maybe 10 of their special editions non-subscription books, including several that you mentioned. I managed to get a leftover First Law trilogy set from then once they put the leftovers on general sale. One day I hope to get a subscriber invitation...
I discovered PangoBooks late last year and am so glad I did, I agree it’s a wonderful app!! Thank you so much for going over all of these! I’m so excited because I finally am getting my first Broken Binding books-I was lucky enough to snag a Winnowing Flame set in the general sale for leftover stock and I’m constantly checking the shipping for when I’ll get it!! I cannot wait! I didn’t have luck with the ones I’ve tried before selling out and I’ve been waiting on the waiting list since I learned of Broken Binding on your channel long ago lol I think their books are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
OwlCrate has really upped their game with customizations over the past year. I used to sub several years ago and found it meh, but now it's definitely worth it
Assuming that you mean the Grim Oak Press edition, I was lucky enough to get a copy. A little bit hard to justify spending that much on a book, but since it's one of my all time favorite fantasy series I pulled the trigger.
I know this is an older video but here's some other cool options that I haven't seen listed: Page & Wick (they send you a book + a candle) Anderida Books Ruined By Fiction
One thing I like about The Broken Binding is that they purposely keep some stock of their special editions available for their general sale. They now have two tiers of subscription - tier 1 is signed and numbered editions, tier 2 is not signed or numbered but otherwise the same - and subscribers get first chance at any exclusive editions that they offered apart from their subscription books. Since they have an incredibly long waitlist, it's nice to know that there is a chance for us mere mortals to purchase their exclusives. Several other of the companies that you mentioned routinely sell out just to their subscribers and end up canceling their general sale. With the Broken Binding a challenge for us in the USA is that that they are a British based company, sometimes (usually) their exclusive books go on sale at 4:00 am Pacific time in the US, and you are paying a lot for shipping from Britain to the US. That being said, I have bought a lot of their exclusive editions though I will be more discriminating going forward because of the shipping cost, and a lack of room on my bookshelf!
I didn't know there were this many different companies doing stuff like this. I knew of Juniper and Folio but I thought regular publishers like Harper Collins were putting out most of the other editions.
Thank you so much for this video!!! I always felt like exclusives were a little gatekept (is that a word?). I've also had some luck finding sprayed edges and dust jackets on etsy.
I live in a country very far away, so freight charges are astronomical, therefore I don't get any subscription boxes. I have some older series, like Star Wars & Gormenghast, where I have some of the old '80s covers and am trying to find the ones I'm missing in 2nd hand bookstores. Then, I've got some beautiful editions of favourites, like The Witcher, the LoTR, illustrated Princess Bride, illustrated Gormenghast, Berserk deluxe editions etc. It's nice to have a matching set of beautiful editions of favourites, but they're mixed in with my older books, too, '80s covers, Penguin Black Spines for my classics, some Barnes & Nobles for my Lovecraft. My biggest score was at a book fair, where I found a Folio edition of Anna Karenina for $4 NZ (c.$2.40 US.) Oh, & if I were rich I'd get the Dark Souls & Bloodborne books by the Irish publisher Tune & Fairweather who have exceptional quality and care in their books. Their Abyssal Archive & Blood Echoes editions would be my first buys! 😍
I don’t mind the early notice. When issues arise is when people buy multiple copies (which makes sense because they are gifting them as well as getting one of their own) depriving the public from a chance. And sometimes, I wish if a company knows how popular they are they can provide more copies from the beginning.
This might be a stupid question, and I'm sorry if it is, but what's a lettered edition? Is it more sought after then say, a numbered edition of a book? 🤔
Lettered is more sought after because there are less of them, 26 to be exact for each letter of the English language, and because they usually have more quality upgrades like a clamshell case, higher quality paper and binding, and additional illustrations to name a few.
Speaking of Owlcrate. The Grisha Trilogy editions that I just saw look so good. Would love to see how the Six of Crows duology will look like, since I much prefer duology to the trilogy.
Rainbow Crate is another hybrid, focused on queer books. I got an exclusive novella from the Tarot Sequence by KD Edwards at the end of last year, so it was cool to be able to not only get a beautiful special edition but something that wasn't being published anywhere else.
There is one small press special edition publisher that is actually located in the EU, Croatia to be precise. Amaranthine Books, they are focused on classics and important and proven genre books. Their most recent pre order was for a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, they have also done Dracula, Alice in Wonderland, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Grey etc., all with great design, art and cool features.
@@nanotyrannus5435 They do make beautiful editions but they are definitely up there in price. Their editions cost a couple 100 to a couple 1000s per book!
@@WinonaCH to be fair, that already includes shipping worldwide with DHL Express, which nobody else does to my knowledge. Still very expensive for the numbered and lettered tier, since Sherlock they have a "Library Edition" though at around 200€. That is the same price range many Subterranean and Grim Oak books land in and gets you Letterpress printing and the same careful design. As high end goes, it's a pretty good value, but I absolutely see that it is still very expensive in total terms.
Thankfully I've only had one bad experience so far buying/selling on Mercari for almost 2 years (knock on wood!). The person was a week+ late shipping the book and then it showed up smelling like old cigarettes. 🤢 Mercari won't give you a refund for that because "they can't confirm a smell" .... so if you submit one asking for a return/refund they leave it up to the seller. :/ I really like Pango, but more often I get people who just don't ship and it auto cancels. I feel like they signed up and then like, forgot they put their books up there lol Great video!! Thank you!

Can you tell me what the books are to your left (viewers right) behind you? they're orange, white, maroon, and purple-ish? Dark Plum? It has a design in gold foil that goes across the spines.
I could do a similar video on this for the UK but Fairyloot, Illumicrate and Waterstones are all UK as I'm sure you know and for second hand I suggest Vinted and World of Books
High end UK based (higher than Folio Society) would be Curious King Books and Lyra's Books, as well as Arete Editions. All those are handbound and Letterpress printed.
@@nanotyrannus5435 Thanks for the replies everyone. It's a shame that there aren't many (compared with the US). HOpefully, i the future we'll get even more choice :)
Last one: Does anyone have a limit of how many editions of the same book or series? Mine for Harry Potter is 2 maybe three. I think with my other ones, it is just one.

Rainbow Crate is another hybrid, focused on queer books. I got an exclusive novella from the Tarot Sequence by KD Edwards at the end of last year, so it was cool to be able to not only get a beautiful special edition but something that wasn't being published anywhere else.
Ahhhhhhh!!!! I had no idea this existed!!! Yeeess!
Loved this content 📖 ❤thank you!
The Owlcrate edition of Study in Drowning (September) is the most gorgeous book I own (if you can get your hands on it) 😍😍😍
Interesting video, I would gladly know which ones are based in which country because if you are in Europe the shipping costs are often way too high.
Illumicrate, Fairyloot, Folio, Broken Binding, Goldsboro, Kraken and Waterstones are UK based. The others are all US or Canada as far as I know.
Just to say I LOVE Pango ♥️
I have several editions of the LOTR books and several editions of Little Women.
Thank you!
Thank you so much Elliot I appreciate all the tips and everything you we so amazing xoxo 😘 💕🌸🌺📙💚🖤📚📖🌺💕💕❤️❤️💖💔🌼🩷🩷🌼💙💙💜💛❣️💕🌸🌸🌺📙💚💚🖤📚📚📖📖📚📚💚🧡💕🌸🌺🌺💕❣️🌼💙🩵🩵💙💙💙💙💜🌷🌷🌷💜💖❣️❣️❣️💕🌺🌺💚📙📚📚🖤
Thank you for this video
Does anyone know if PangoBooks is available in Australia? 😅
Can you tell me what the books are to your left (viewers right) behind you? they're orange, white, maroon, and purple-ish? Dark Plum?
It has a design in gold foil that goes across the spines.
I've used Mercari a lot with no problems, fortunately... last purchase from there was The Night Circus 🎪
Great Video!
WHERE did you get the hardcover editions of Ninth Rain???? 👀
The Broken Binding Subscription.
Need Lyra's and Curious King on there too haha
Would be great to know the best options in the UK besides the folio society :)
I could do a similar video on this for the UK but Fairyloot, Illumicrate and Waterstones are all UK as I'm sure you know and for second hand I suggest Vinted and World of Books
Goldsboro, Broken Binding and Inkstone (a fairly new one) are all UK based 🙂
High end UK based (higher than Folio Society) would be Curious King Books and Lyra's Books, as well as Arete Editions. All those are handbound and Letterpress printed.
@@nanotyrannus5435 Thanks for the replies everyone. It's a shame that there aren't many (compared with the US). HOpefully, i the future we'll get even more choice :)
Normalnie zazdroszczę coś pięknego Pozdrawiam uprzejmie
Inkstone Books is another company similar to Goldsboro.
Last one:
Does anyone have a limit of how many editions of the same book or series?
Mine for Harry Potter is 2 maybe three.
I think with my other ones, it is just one.
I love special editions and they are amazing unique and wonderful and so wonderful and gorgeous xoxo 😘 📙📙📙📚📚🌺💕🖤💚💚🌼🌼🌸📖🧡🩵💜💙❣️💛💛❤️💔❤️🌼🌸📙💖💜💜🖤💕🖤💜💜💔💛💛❤️🪻🪻❤️🔥🩷🩵🩵💜💚🖤💙💜💜💜💜❤️🔥🪻💛❤️🌼🌷🌷🌷🌼❤️💔🩷🩷
I wish people didn't sell their special editions on Mercari/Pango etc for multiple times the price. Every FairyLoot/Illumicrate etc edition I search is selling for HUNDREDS and that is just insane. I get that it's a special edition, but they're profiting like crazy for marking it up 3x the price.
😊😊
You forgot The Arcane Society 😬
Mercari is so scuffed. Ebay and pango>
Suntup
At this point, i feel like mercari is a scam.
I was sort of interested in that Lord of the Rings set, but the art just looks awful...
