  • In today's episode, we explore Porirua, another town on the outskirts of Wellington. Porirua is known as the home of Pataka Art and Museum, a popular and diverse museum and art gallery. Porirua completely surrounds Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour, which is a popular spot for windsurfing, waterskiing and jet skiing.

    The place you thought was a rundown shop that has the word Halloween in the window, is the emergency accommodation hotel. It's called The Post because it is in the old Post Office.
    The Whitaker Chocolate is up on the hill above the town. Up Prosser Street, turn into Mohuia Crescent.
    You missed out the main shopping mall North City. Porirua CBD is quite disjointed and spread out

    Thanks for visiting my home town of Porirua. Unfortunately it has a few issues and as you can see a lot of it is empty or run down. Because it is so close to Wellington its more of a 'living' city than a 'tourist/entertainment' or 'business' city, so it doesn't really need to put on much of a show, and anything cool is usually in Wellington anyway. It also drives the house prices up as people live in Porirua and work in Wellington. Then you add in mismanagement by the city council to make things worse. I hope you checked out the North City Plaza and Mega Centre, they are the best shopping areas in Porirua, and Titahi Bay beach is one of the best in the area. I do love and miss my home town but I can't afford to live there and even if I could it's not worth it anymore unfortunately.
    PS. when you get to the South Island if you go through Fairlie you should stop at the Fairlie Bakehouse for some pastries. They do the best steak and pepper pie I have ever had, and I've tried pies all over the country.

    It wasn't long ago and it was about $2-3 for a scoop of chips, and $2-3 a piece of fish also. All of the sudden they have become $6 a scoop, and $6 for a piece of fish😜. I don't know who decides that. But if you want a cheap delicious snack, you're better off going to a supermarket. You can get a whole bag of frozen chips for less than $6. Or a whole box of crumbed fish for $6. Takeaway stores have been seriously hurt financially because of competition, that's why they have to charge more. They never had so much competition in the past. I've noticed that the pieces of fish are much larger for $6. But don't expect the fish to stay large. I don't understand why they don't just keep the fish the same size, and increase the price by 50c, instead of $3. It's like some kind of game going on there. Because believe me, give it a few years, and they will make the piece of fish smaller again. They 'always' do!😜.

    • @GlenAndMado
      @GlenAndMado  6 місяців тому +1

      Welcome to inflation haha. But let’s be honest freshly sliced potatoes compared to frozen chips is so much different 😂 I never sacrifice quality food haha. And also same with the fish. 🐟 but we do feel it’s quite expensive but it hasn’t become slightly cheaper since the winter since we arrived 😀

    • @MrTurboCat21
      @MrTurboCat21 6 місяців тому

      @@GlenAndMado There has always been inflation though you see. I took that into account. I'm born in NZ Palmerston North, and fish and chips have 'never' increased my that much in a year. It's usually small increments of like 50c to a dollar. But both one fish and one scoop of chips, has gone up by a whopping $3 in just one year. Because I used to live on fish burgers a few years ago, and I knew the prices. I honestly think it's all the new super cheap stores, and new fast food outlets cropping up. I just don't even buy takeaways anymore, because it's not cost effective. Eg. One fish and half a scoop of chips is the best part of ten dollars. That's excluding sauce, which is another $2. I used to buy two fish and one scoop, with money still left over from $10. It's so much more cost effective to just go to the supermarket. Eg. One large cooked chicken is around $14, and can last most of the week in sandwiches etc, if rationed. It's a clear money saver. It's a shame really. Not that I think takeaways are a good way to eat anyway. But it was convenient and saved cooking etc. People still waste their money on takeaways though. Even if I had more money to burn, I still wouldn't get takeaways at that price. Unless I was wealthy enough that spending money didn't matter so much. Most ppl don't have that privilege. Interestingly, those that do buy takeaways, usually cannot afford to live very well, and are often complaining. Just like those ppl that use those electric scooters, for $20 an hour, cannot afford to live very well. I don't get it at all😜. And I have 'no' sympathy for them if they cannot afford other basic essential items. As for NZ being dangerous, that is just a 'myth'. Eg. A few of the very bad stories. But really, bad experiences only happen to those bad ppl looking for that intentionally. You basically have to seek it out in other words. Which is not easy to do. Eg. I've lived as a rebellious teenager and alternative artist for years, and come across no serious violence. But I still wouldn't go walking around at strange hours of the night alone, in areas I'm not familiar with. As long as you stay away from trouble and don't seek it out, and don't provoke it, you usually cannot get into trouble. Stay around common places where there are people and cameras etc, is your safest bet. A simple 'hello' is all that's required. Difficult characters will be confused if you say much more, and might fly off on another tangent of suspicion. You want to keep things as simple and casual as possible, esp around the rough uncivilised types. You will know who you should be cautious of, just by their mannerism and dress. Good travelling. Cheers!

    Of course we have crime in NZ, what country doesn't ? But I think your being a bit unfair on us, NZ was voted the 2nd safest country in the world to live in 2021 where Ireland only made it to number 7 and that was only out of European cities. Also we don't have to ( salt ) Grit our roads like you do in Europe so our cars don't rust out in 10 years like your Irish / UK cars , hence you will see older models still in very good condition body wise driving about. ( having a garage helps as well )
