Ohhhh NO, I’m done chasing tobaccos, I’ve been chasing for 31 years, so don’t try to ignite that flame again under my tail. I’m at a point where I’m being chased by the tobaccos that I have… ha ha ha. It’s good to see how we found our alternative tobaccos in replacing the ones that are obsolete. Good stuff my friend, THANK YOU for making and sharing this video with us 👍🏻👍🏻
White night,Blackhouse,Firestorm all Russ blends I never really hear people talking about that are excellent! Almost all of those you mentioned I never hear people talking about and there’s so many more. Great vid Brian
Virginia. Slices is definitely on the list. Here is a short list for me. Virginia Slices 505 Red. Virginia Six pence GLP Boswell Railroad Station Peter Stokkebye bullseye Mac Baren Virginia slices Be well and keep em burning. Blessings from Gettysburg Pa…
So glad you mentioned Sixpence. I’m amazed that one doesn’t get more attention. I’ll definitely try some of the others. Love this type of video. Fantastic!
I totally agree about Quiet NIghts and Brebbia Latakia Flake. GL Pease is such a talented blender, and just because his stuff isn't hard to time doesn't mean it's not great. Just tried Windjammer, and it's superb.
Thanks for the info on subs for what ya can't get as they are hard to get....for me being in Canada I need to be careful how much to get as the Canadian government likes to charge a arm and leg on the tobacco tax....sad we get hit so hard..
It’s sad for sure with ridiculous taxes , there starting to go up here , when I started out about 12 years ago I could get 10 tins of tobacco for $100 not anymore lol
With all of the wonderful alternatives out there. I'm not at all concerned about those hard to get blends. I'm geared towards stocking up as much as I can, as fast as I can. Besides, what's to say that blends readily available today won't be unicorn blends in 5, or 10 years from now?
The Sutliff VA Slices are made in Denmark. Sutliff just resells it and also puts it in some of their blends. I think VooDoo Queen is one of them. You can tell by how thin the flake cut is that Sutliff doesn't make it. Your spot on with Star of the East and Quiet Nights, excellent english flakes. Also I would add Fiammata from Castello make by C&D. (Vaper Blend and it seams it's no longer in production, another C&D mistake) I always hear the complaining about mold (including myself) but some of their blends are spot on and are worth the gamble. The Amphora Burley Blend had a tiny bit of Kentucky and Virginia which makes this sing. I use to mention this over and over about all these hype blends but people love Hype and Trending blends and are willing to pay crazy money for them too, lol.
@@beans316 From what I heard years ago its from the Orlik factory. Which makes sence because it has that same flavor profile as Orlik and Stokkebye flakes.
Good morning my friend. I've tried a number of these from watching your videos or at your suggestion. I tried the Formers at your suggestion and boy am I glad I did. Now of course there is going to be a run on all of these blends at the on-line stores. Have a great rest of the weekend.
Good morning Brian, this is a great video for someone starting out & want some guidance. You nailed the blends that many over look. I do personally enjoy Penzance very much. I can remember when it was readily available, before all the hype, & I paid less than $20 for 8oz bag. Would I pay more, no. Star east is just as good. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Cheers & Keep them smoking that’s what they are made for, Art
Great Review Video!! (As Always) You are right on all those Blends. I love the LJ Peretti London Flake because it's Great!! I got the Thanksgiving Blend and it an Excellent Blend too. I too enjoy the Amphora Blends. Thanks for sharing......Jose from Texas
In Matches860 1/17/2020 Friday Night Live, John talked about how much he liked Sutliff Virginia Slices (507-C). That - along with Opening Night, Union Square, Luxury Navy Flake, and Yorktown - make up a large amount of my favorites. All of them benefit greatly from just a little age.
McConnell Scottish Flake, Stokkeybye Toasted Burley, wessex Burley slice, C&D Epiphany (not sure if under rated but I like it and don't hear about it much), HH blackhouse
Star of The East Flake, HH Old Dark Fired Ready Rubbed, HH Bold Kentucky, The Hiking are all great blends! Amphora Burley and Amphora Kentucky blend are great as well!
I've been trying to tell people for years how great 507C is. Its so underrated! Same with HH Pure Virginia. All 3 Former's blends, the Birdseye is great too. 633 is a top 5 blend for me. My underrated blends are Amphora Virginia, London Flake, Boston Slices, Newminster 400, 4th Generation Evening flake, & Sillems 1814 & 1695 flakes.
As a new pipe smoker and a lurker, I catch all the weekend vids, but this one I watched several times, I prefer Virginia's and will be on the look out for some of those! That's for the great content.
This review was… fantastic 🤪 First Amendment kicked Six Pence out of my rotation. I tell everyone who mentions how much they enjoy SP to give 1A a try. Gorgeous morning down state! Hope you’re having a great one too!
Even the stuff that is underrated is getting hard to buy. Everything seems to come in a batch and sells out pretty quick. I guess one that I like and never have trouble finding is Capstan Blue.
Some of my favorites.. Star of the east and quiet nights are top shelf all the way.. Good idea on mixing some VA with that Kentucky. I’ll feel the Kentucky blend is just a bit much for me too so that should mellow it out and give it some sweetness
I smoked Frog Morton cellar a few times back when it was available but switched to Quiet Nights since I found frog to be too mellow for my taste, I get that the rarity adds to the flavor but I found quiet nights to be superior.
Skip to 10:19 - how is no one mentioning that O…. Enjoying First amendment and Lane HGL! Want to order your recommendation on LJ Peretti but shipping is brutal! Enjoyed the video.
To me an extremely underrated blend is H&H Louisiana Red. This blend has the most tangy viniger notes I've ever had in a red Virginia. When I smell the tin my nose tingles from the rich tang.
Great video, as always! Smoking Pipes should send you extra Christmas cards on my behalf... I've purchased tons based on your recommendations. I have yet to crack most of them, but I have a lot to look forward to. Thanks!
Been smoking a pipe for 50 years and never have acquired a taste for Virginia flakes, VaPers, Vaburs. I just don't like Virginias! However...they have their uses. The Sutliff Virginia flake is made by Orlik. The arrangement was in place before MacBaren bought Sutliff from Altadis, and MacBaren was was wise enough to leave well-enough alone.
@@beans316 The Internet has really opened up choices for pipe smokers. Back in 1971 when I took up the pipe, Virginia flakes were unknown and largely unavailable in Southeastern Ohio. In spring, 1972 Marietta Pipe and Tobacco opened, and they carried Sobranie Virginia Flake. Being a huge fan of Sobranie White, I bought a tin. There was nothing to it, as far as I could tell. I was, however, blown away by Edgeworth Slices. The best Burley that ever was! Keep puffing, my friend.
If I could go back in time I would have stocked up more on the D&R regulars that are now discontinued, and before Mark Ryan sold the business. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks my friend that’s why I wish you made vids you are truly a wealth of knowledge. I learned a lot from you with some of these Vapers so many to try so little time haha
Some really good choices. I really like sixpence. I also like to mix amphora Kentucky and Virginia - quite good. Thanks for the tip on London Flake. I’ll have to give that a try.
I absolutely love Newminster #403 Superior Rounds!!! And I hope nobody else can stand it. Great mildly sweet taste and a nice kick, to me anyway and it comes in bulk!
Great video Brian! It's a really good summary. Missing Marlin Flake. I don't know if it is underrated in the U. S. but it's one of the best vapers that I know. I'm also missing Peterson Flake (former Dunhill). Both flakes are a 9 of 10 to me.
Sutliff 507c Virginia slices is one of my all time favorite tobaccos! (And I never was a Virginia smoker until I discovered it.) Some great tobaccos there Brian!
Great video Beans !! As a guy who started out as a Aromatic smoker 40 years ago, I've found my tastes are now in the Virginias and the Burleys. The only tobacco I have started to stay away from in my older years is Perique ..... I'm finding the oriental, spicy types just don't agree with me anymore.
Great video Brian! Def some fantastic and underrated blends. Been enjoying SOTE flake for years and agree as well as Quiet nights tho I prefer Chelsea Morning. Have to get some of that Hiking as it sounds right up my alley. Best wishes.
Hope you like it it’s really a great blend I was blown away with that and park square. I had the London Flake with McClelland va and the new Va both are really good
I enjoy these vids, agree with your opinions on alot of these I've tried and some are favorites. Hiking and Asbury are tops for me in your recommendations. Macbaren navy flake is good along with HH virginia. Bulks are great buys but need some age so good cellar candidates I agree. I've enjoyed erik stoykebye evening flake since it came out, now it's hard to catch in stock, good bulk va per. Newminster light burley is a new bulk favorite, excellent if you enjoy burley. Cloud hopper is a very good one wish they sold that in 8oz tins haha. Grey ghost is another I wish came in 8oz tins. Aromatix got me into low country Guendelose that's a good blend. Looking forward to your 2021 cringle review, I got mine yesterday and had a few bowls.
I’ve always said Capstan Gold is underrated, especially with age on it as Blue gets all the attention. Great video, Brian, is there a way I can reach you via email?
In 10 yrs of piping I have never had Stonehaven. I have even had dreams about the stuff. Not kidding. But just picked up 2 tins of the Cobblestone Hiking upon your recommendation. I love Gawith Hoggarth Kendal, Rum Flake Bob's Chocolate Flake, but English blends smell and taste bad to me.
Dear Sir, My favorite tobacco was picayune. By daughter's and Ryan. Sorry if I misspelled it. Do you have a recommendation for a perique forward smoke. I currently am smoking C and Ds Bayou Morning Flake Thank you for any help.
Yes I do if you like strong perique blends there are a couple amazing ones first is Exclusive from Cornell & Diehl it comes in tin or bulk the other is the Formers blends very good Vaper . The Exclusive is also amazing to mix with other Va
One of the online retailers recently had a 30% off sale on Sutliff bulk. I got 5 pounds for less than $145 shipped! Great stuff for cheap! Btw I would be willing to properly dispose of a couple ounces of Stonehaven for you! I know that’s a major sacrifice but I’m willing to fall on that grenade for you because that’s what friends do! 😂🤣😅
I bought 8oz London Flake last year after your 9.5 rating. I wanted to let it age a bit before I try it. Dose that paint can style tin stay sealed well or should I transfer it to a mason jar???
I agree with star of the east.. one of my favorites.. i didn't like Penzance at all... was a big let down.. I fell for for the hype.. my other favorite would be 3p's... love that stuff... close to that would be salty dogs.. quiet nights is great too... i also did not like spark plug... very stubborn tobacco... ive enjoyed old Ironsides too... just hard to find....
Wise words have patience and it will come to you, I have to agree with you star of the east & quiet night are very good subs if not better then penzance personally I think it over rated
Star of the East Flake, Quiet Nights, Orlik, MB Pure Virginia, are all fantastic blends. No Dunhills!? Come on Brian!!!! So many great picks in their line-up. 😂 Cheers buddy!
They were all going to be mentioned in part 2 haha yep it’s funny you heard everyone cry when dunhill disappeared but now that Peterson took over with everything being exactly the same nothing 😂🤣
I nominate Peter Heinrich Curly Special as underrated! With some age of course.

Boswell Railroad Station

Penny Farthing and Formers tobacco are outstanding.
They sure are and if you really like perique C&D exclusive is amazing smells like manure but tastes great and a awesome mixer with other Va blends
"i get a little carried away with my tobacco". yep me to man. some good blends there. you hit on most of my favorites.
Great to hear from you my friend Any snow yet up your way ?
You mentioned C&D Opening Night a long time ago as an underrated tobacco. I smoke it all the time.

Great to hear from you wow that’s a great deal on that Sutliff I really like the Va slices
$1.80/ounce for a great flake tobacco! That’s a steal in my book.
I bought 8oz London Flake last year after your 9.5 rating. I wanted to let it age a bit before I try it. Dose that paint can style tin stay sealed well or should I transfer it to a mason jar???
It will stay good for a long time after opened and will stay for many years unopened
@@beans316 thanks for the response! I’ve never had that style of tin before. I have some peace of mind now.
Haha yep for sure my friend
Star of the East Flake, Quiet Nights, Orlik, MB Pure Virginia, are all fantastic blends. No Dunhills!? Come on Brian!!!! So many great picks in their line-up. 😂 Cheers buddy!
They were all going to be mentioned in part 2 haha yep it’s funny you heard everyone cry when dunhill disappeared but now that Peterson took over with everything being exactly the same nothing 😂🤣
