They sing in their own accent which we Scots had never heard before. Their first single that was a hit in UK 🇬🇧 "Letter from America" is about the Highland clearances
It's interesting, because it's often said that singing mysteriously nullifies accents. Of course, that just means that you're assuming that your accent is the default "no accent".

I was stationed in Scotland when this came out in the 80s. It literally took the UK by storm and you knew it was one of those songs that the world was going to love.
One hit wonders?? One hit wonders??? They've had seven top 30 albums and five top thirty singles in the UK and in Scotland especially Craig and Charlie Reid are massive. But they are even better live. hardly a word is spoken, it's just one song after another, a typical set-list would be about 25 songs and the audience know every word of each one, they are just tremendous. Which is why I'm grateful to you, I've only just found that they are touring in the UK later in the year so I now have two tickets for the Royal Concert Hall in my hot, sweaty mailbox. It's going to be a good night. But it would be better if we were watching them in Scotland.
The UK and Ireland tour currently has 49 dates between June and December with more to be announced. The Scottish leg is in November and December, all but two of the concerts have sold out already.
The way Brad explains how the song goes loud and quiet at unexpected points, is a bit like how conversations with my Scottish grand dad use to go when he got on the whiskey 🤣

Yeah. I've caught some of their one hit wonder livestreams and so many of the artists are anything but one hit wonders. Typically the live stream chat is full of folks who don't know music.
They are a one-hit wonder from an American perspective. It's the only song of theirs that charted here, and that didn't even happen until 1993 despite the song originally being from 1987. Whenever we talk of one-hit wonders, we mean here in the US. We don't pay attention to foreign charts. Of course even then people have different ideas of what exactly constitutes a "hit" song. Billboard Top 100? Top 40? Top 10? Did it have to peak at #1 (if so this song wasn't a hit either, as it peaked at #3)? I think most of us just go "I heard it on the radio a lot and it seems like pretty much everyone knows the song, therefore it was a hit", without much regard for the actual chart positions anyway, haha.
@@nethrelm whole I see what you mean, you have to remember that just because you are American or Brad and Lex are... @@paulshaw9953 It's their channel, and they're American, so that's the perspective they're going to bring. Yes, UA-cam is global, so you can choose to watch creators from anywhere in the world... You chose to watch an American channel and complain that their perspective is too America-centric. Do you go on Japanese channels and complain that they aren't speaking English or that their perspective is too Japan-centric as well? Not everyone wants to be some kind of global citizen... most people actually are attached to their culture and have little interest in what the rest of the world gets up to as long as it isn't threatening their way of life. It's not "backwards thinking", it's normal. Your entitled attitude that they should cater to your perspective rather than their own is what's backwards.
@@nethrelm of course I wouldn't criticise Japanese people for speaking their native tongue but that makes no sense to this discussion... If they did a 90s stream and reacted to songs all released and made popular in the 80s would that be OK with you? I mean it's their channel so why not right?? Also they asked for 1 hit wonders, not American one hit wonders, they are broadcasting live all over the world asking people to suggest one hit wonders, they are literally working on a global scale... it's not about me wanting a certain thing, it's about facts. Fact is, this song isn't their only hit

Whenever I hear this song I think about the summer after my graduation. I was constantly hanging out with my best friend who was going to leave town for his new job. We were drinking beers, eating pizza, going out and watching How I met your mother (the song features prominently in a couple of episodes). Good times.
Brad, the soft and loud in a song is called "dynamics" - the music gets louder (crescendos) and softer (decrescendos) at times for effect. This is a fun little song that everybody can sing along with and enjoy. This song was also a running joke in the show "How I Met Your Mother" - a tape of it got stuck in Marshall's Fiero and it was the only song that ever played when they were in that car. It crops up in several episodes.
I don't think he meant that, and maybe you didn't notice, but there were very short moments of volume-peaks that i never heard in this song before. The video they watched must have some faulty audio.
You should watch a video of the band playing just a few years ago at a musical festival and it had been at least 20 yrs since the song was a hit and the crowd goes crazy at the beginning of the song. It's just a good song that brings everyone together. 😊
in the student's union bar in Glasgow when I was at uni there this song was the second to last song on every night (before flower of Scotland) and every time the whole place went full on bananas every single time . Brilliant memories
This song is so obscenely catchy despite it's simplicity! There was something wrong with the audio of the lyric video that you used, the volume doesn't vary like that on the original.
There was a punkband who did a punk version of this song and the always rewrote the lyrics ‘when i haver, *whatever that means*, i’ll be tha man who’s havering for you…lol. Few people outside scotland seem to know what it means.
I found you guys from a twenty one pilots reaction, but I am here to stay. Y’all love music enough to appreciate and comment on different genres without any apparent bias. You just take each piece for what it is. I love it so much! 🤞❤️
You should listen to a live version of this at one of the many out door concerts they perform in Scotland. The crowd interaction, lifts the sing to a new level.
I loved this song since the first time I heard it. They weren't a one hit wonder, they had a few hits but this is by far their biggest hit. I just spoiled the whole comment section, this is the 667th comment
The greatest part about these two is that they are unashamed to sing in their Scots dialect. It was extremely uncommon back in the day as most singers would try to sound American or British, but people REALLY liked the sound they had going, and I can't imagine it being sung any other way. Celebrate our differences, folks. We all have something we can learn and appreciate from each other :)
More than hearing this song you gotta experience it. Go to a pub, a club or a wedding when this song is played and you’ll see what I mean. I’ve played this song hundred of times it never fails to get everyone up singing, shouting the chorus and creating a belt
One of the goofiest songs ever to become a hit . It's nerve racking. God, my friends, brothers and I hated it! radio and MTV would play this . Its alt rock mixed with folk rock. Admittingly it became catchy in later years, as you would hear it on movies, commercials. lol. Then my daughter liked this song when she was a baby. Uugghh!!! lol
Yeah I have to admit I can't stand this song either. I first heard it when they were guests on Letterman. I literally thought it was a Letterman show joke and was confused that it became popular.
1993 down at Penns Landing in Philly for one of the summer's series of free concerts and the Proclaimers are scheduled to play. But this song gets huge for them, and they get the opportunity to play a paying gig in a real venue. So what did they do? They showed up and played this song and a couple others and then off they went!! Credit to them for making the effort for those of us too broke to pay for tickets.
My friend was from the same very small town as the Proclaimers (Auchtermuchty), and he loved nothing more than banging out this tune on karaoke. He would also just burst out into it in random conversations because he knew it would make me laugh. I miss him.
What a classic track, one of the very few songs that is guaranteed to get everyone in the UK on the dance floor!! Even had a charity version realised for our Red Nose Day years ago. It was on the soundtrack for a Johnny Depp movie but I can't remember which. Great reaction 👍

@@1234cheerful Thanks a lot - but a little correction: Juliette Lewis played with Johnny Depp in "Gilbert Grape" - also a very nice calm movie with more than two special personalities :)
This is a great movie
@@1234cheerful Mary Stuart Masterson was the actress in Benny and Joon.
You’re making us all sound like alcoholics. Lol.
If your granddad was indeed Scottish he'd be drinking whisky. If he was Irish he'd be drinking whiskey.
@@Derry_Aire he was a blue nose Glaswegian. Passed away at 92. He was infamous in our local area for being the oldest guy to get an ASBO at the age of 80 something. He broke a guys wrist for trying to pinch his drink in the pub.
Fantastic band and certainly not a one hit wonder, their best of is stacked
UA-cam is global so to just think in terms of one location is backwards thinking... it should be based on what the band had globally, I'm On My Way and Letters From America are hits too if you think outside of one country
That's a bar song. It's a drink five beers and jump up and down in place song. It's marvelous.
This is a joyous song and I have had it on my playlist for many years
I love this song so much, it just makes you want to sing with it, and pulls you into the song
You should check out They Might Be Giants - "Birdhouse in Your Soul."
"Dr. Worm" or "Istanbul."
Ana Ng.
@@shanebrown4146 I live in "Old" Amsterdam...
Well an hour or so outside of it...
I remember when Tiny Toons did a "music video" for "Istanbul, not Constantinople"... Eegads, I am old!
At some point in the last day and a hallf binge listening to you , you were talking about Mitch and said the wrong words, I just don't remember, it's all running together. But I just thought about it during this video I was telling someone about Mitch's secret identity as a Fender Guitar, and I said, and I quote "him and his latented little mouth". We had a very good laugh, of course they didn't know all I know about Mitch. Just thought you might get a laugh out of this.
Whenever I hear this song I think about the summer after my graduation. I was constantly hanging out with my best friend who was going to leave town for his new job. We were drinking beers, eating pizza, going out and watching How I met your mother (the song features prominently in a couple of episodes). Good times.
It is literally impossible to not dance when these Scottish twins fire up this beauty!!
'I'm on my way' is another feel good banger from the Proclaimers. It was in the first Shrek movie.
A love song, plain and simple.
You should watch a video of the band playing just a few years ago at a musical festival and it had been at least 20 yrs since the song was a hit and the crowd goes crazy at the beginning of the song. It's just a good song that brings everyone together. 😊
Their best ballad and song is Sunshine On Leith, which is pretty much a national hymn of Scotland. It's my expert opinion.
in the student's union bar in Glasgow when I was at uni there this song was the second to last song on every night (before flower of Scotland) and every time the whole place went full on bananas every single time
. Brilliant memories
Great vibe to this song...love it!
Basically, it is the love song from the movie Benny and Joon.
Haver is I think to speak nonsense or to talk in a confused and excited way.
The dance you do to this song is a drunken march around in circles on the dancefloor singing at the top of your voice, usually at a wedding.
Lex - Haver: To talk nonsense, gibberish; to speak rubbish. Like parts of this song, lol
Totally Flippen Groovy LUV song!!! hahaha Luv it!
This song and Runrig's cover of Loch Lomond are the two most quintessential Scottish songs
oooh yeah Runrig is awesome
BIg Country might have something to say about that.😄
errr...The Bluebells..Young at Heart?
The is the real Scottish National Anthem! If you ever see a concert in Scotland where this is played, it is amazing.
Haver = To talk in a foolish or trivial manner, speak nonsense, to babble, gossip.
Suddenly Haverford college makes more sense🤣
It's a love song to Scotland. It builds up for the wild dancing we do to this song, you need a breather.
You have to find a Live Version, where tens of thousands sing the whole song with them.
Imagine dragons have a live show with this. Very well done.
Thank you for listening to a Scottish band. Love you x
A hilarious one to see Lex's reaction to would be *Khia - My Neck, My Back*
Brad can try to analyze the lyrics.
I found you guys from a twenty one pilots reaction, but I am here to stay. Y’all love music enough to appreciate and comment on different genres without any apparent bias. You just take each piece for what it is. I love it so much! 🤞❤️
Can't think of this song without thinking of How I met your Mother. The perfect song to be stuck in a tape deck
SAME
SAME
and if you get sick of it, just wait, it comes around again.
Lex looked like she was having a blast listening to this song and that makes it worth it! It’s a good song, never heard the whole song before.👍🏻
Havering means to talk rubbish/nonsense and since the preceding line is about getting drunk, it makes sense :)
You should listen to a live version of this at one of the many out door concerts they perform in Scotland.
The crowd interaction, lifts the sing to a new level.
Back when this song came out you could literally be in an area where other people are and yell "Da da da dah" and get a "Da da da dah" back.
I loved this song since the first time I heard it. They weren't a one hit wonder, they had a few hits but this is by far their biggest hit.
I just spoiled the whole comment section, this is the 667th comment
This was the opening song for the movie Bennie and June with Johnny Depp, and it is an adorable 90's film you would love it
The greatest part about these two is that they are unashamed to sing in their Scots dialect. It was extremely uncommon back in the day as most singers would try to sound American or British, but people REALLY liked the sound they had going, and I can't imagine it being sung any other way.
Celebrate our differences, folks. We all have something we can learn and appreciate from each other :)
The love theme to Johnny Depp's movie Benny & Joon. Great song, incredible movie!!!!
Argent "Hold Your Head Up"...An Absolute Classic.
Benny and Joon
Dont know how you dont get into this song, such a classic and upbeat song. Loved Max singing it on Zoey's extraordinary playlist, that is real love.
I have to sing along with every time. My daughter and I would sing this on long car trips. Love it!
My husband's band covers this song. People love to sing along to it. Lots of call and response. I always get a kick out of it.
Great song that's stood the test of time. Lex gets it. Lex is a star. Awesome to watch you latch into a song like that.
Such a sweet love song-it’s the everyday things that really matters ♥️
This a staple for any party, car kareoke, weddings nights out!! Everyone in UK knows the lyrics
Tickets for their concert 25th of august "Melkweg" Amsterdam in the pocket , fantastic band en great song (and they have many more) :-)
My friend was from the same very small town as the Proclaimers (Auchtermuchty), and he loved nothing more than banging out this tune on karaoke. He would also just burst out into it in random conversations because he knew it would make me laugh. I miss him.
When I hear this song what I think of the most is the movie Benny and Joon. I also remember hearing it from an episode or 2 of How I Met Your Mother.
What a classic track, one of the very few songs that is guaranteed to get everyone in the UK on the dance floor!! Even had a charity version realised for our Red Nose Day years ago. It was on the soundtrack for a Johnny Depp movie but I can't remember which. Great reaction 👍
Yes Thank You & I had to look up the movie myself lol Benny & Joon great great movie
