We have admired NPI for so long! You and Elaine have brought us so many smiles and laughter, plus deep thoughts that we treasure both of you! We are honored and humbled by the shoutout! Thanks so much family! We love ya! :)
The phrase "More parties in the USA" at 3:39 is a reference to the Jonathan Richman song "Parties in the USA" which is on the album in the background of the shot!
I hope you will fulfill that goal of vacationing to the Cascadia region of North America. Years ago, I was able to spend a few days in Glacier National Park (Montana) in which several distinct ecosystems come together with a wide array floral and fauna display during the growing season. The glaciers, lakes and waterfalls there were lovely to behold, as well. Someday, I would like to visit British Colombia to add to my Cascadia experience and memories. Thank you for this review. I enjoy the game, along with many I have taught how to play it.
Wonderful overview and entertaining as always. I took notes: Don't sleep next to a bear, was chief among them. Only slightly second is that the British like straight queues. Subscribed!
Thanks for this video! The art and presentation here really is marvelous. If I played it anywhere other than here in Washington state it would make me feel homesick.
I would be really excited about a podcast dedicated to a historical tour of why NPI picked each LP that has been in the background of their videos. I might also need to recalibrate my excitement threshold
This awesome video review comes right before a trip up to the mountains. Would be a great game to bring along! I can't wait to see what you put out next.
You are officially our favorite channel. The effort and quality of your videos is unrivalled, so much love to you! Please keep being you and thank you for everything that you do! Hope we get to share a game one day!
Great video. I've already fallen in love with Cascadia and enjoy all that it has too offer. I appreciate the commentary regarding how Cascadia can appeal to both newcomers and established gamers. There are subtle layers of depth to explore and delight in -- like an elegant wine. Also, the shout out to OFPG is very well deserved. There is definitely a quality than cannot be described, but must be seen. They do treat the boardgame community as an extension to their family. As any family reunion can attest to, this is not always an easy task. Thank you for all that you and Elaine do.
If you ever make it to Oregon, which you should, I’d certainly be glad to show you around or give you suggestions of places to see. There’s a lot more than forests.
My stepdad moved out to Washington state a few years ago and I’ve been able to visit a few times. The Pacific Northwest is really beautiful, definitely worth the trip once you can make it!
Thank you for this great review. We just love Cascadia and think the whole Flatout Games team really knocked this one out of the park. Living on the West Coast of Canada really helps to make this one stick for us as well. Thanks again for sharing❤
Y’know the Pacific Northwest isn’t alone in its biodiversity, here in New York we have the humble rat! And the humble pigeon! Also the humble mafia informant! Rat capital of the world baby! Also hell yeah Cascadia
I'm not big on puzzley games, and I already have Gods Love Dinosaurs which seems like it's in a very similar niche. But now I'm really tempted by Cascadia.
If you're still looking for a "first-game" I highly recommend Sushi Roll (or Sushi Go if you must but I prefer Roll). It's got cute art, chunky dice you get to roll a lot, interesting but not overly complex scoring options, a little "take that" if you want it, and it plays fast enough to not over stay it's welcome. It's a perfect first game imho with the added bonus that it's super affordable so if she hates it you're only out $15 instead of 40!
This is the most interested I've been in a board game that's been reviewed by any channel for a long time. Not sure if that's credit to the game itself or Efka.
Discussion point: Incorporating an extra/specific mechanic to create variation on an existing core mechanic to the game implies that that core mechanic isn't quite as refined/balanced/developed as it could have been. (In this case having a market refresh mechanic, even if being able to do so is as a reward for taking one of the more limited tiles).
I see what you're getting at, but you know, not putting an airbag in just cause a car is a flawed design to begin with is a hill I'd not want to die on.
@@NoPunIncluded this is an open design discussion, no need to put it all on the line like that! Now if that extra mechanic doesn't interfere with the main gameplay loop and has minimal overhead then perhaps it's the best solution.
Oh, I like the idea of discussion questions. My guess is that trying to avoid these solutions would result in rules becoming complexer or less intuitive. This solution is easy and intuitive, and elegantly addresses two of the main issues many tile laying games have.
Thank you for your thoughts on Cascadia. You're so good at explaining what makes you appreciate (or not appreciate) a game. And I don't know how you do it, but you always manage to make games look better than other reviewers. This was one of the games that didn't really appeal to me because it looked so bland in pictures and videos. But then even that issue is solved by how it looks here. All in all, makes me curious to give this one a try.
Love this channel and will be checking out the Patreon soon. I wish I could offer you a beer and a good game while you visit the national parks in our area...but alas...we live in North Texas and, well, it's not Cascadia. There's the beer, and the games...'sigh'...I married a Texan.
awww i was kinda hoping it was a game about a german dance group formed in 2004 but then i realised i got it confused with "cascada" lol great review guys! Stay Hexy!
This is one of those rare games that everyone recommends, but I'm still not convinced. I need to find a local board gaming group that will let me play a copy of this so I can figure out what all the hype is about.
Absolutely agree, Cascadia is a "best in class" for design marrying elegance with depth topped off with great production and theme. In a crowded market this one shines exceptionally bright.
This has been the perfect game I've been looking for a long time. Something simple for the family and new people to games that prevents me from having to play catan or ttr again!
Great enjoyablevideo like always - even though the game didn't convince me at all. Too soloistic for a head-to-head excitement and too simple in the way that you can and probably should calculate the gain every turn, which is just really draggy. Not for me :-(
This game looks super cool, and I love the review! My only criticism is that you've classified the whole of cascadia as an American thing, even mentioning British Columbia but neglecting to mention it's a different country. And locally, that's really important! As a Canadian, the cultural dominance of America is stifling at best, and within cascadia I have more friends on both sides of the border that agree on an allegiance to the local area more than to their respective countries. (If this is also a failing on the game's part, I would like to know about that as part of the review, though a quick google suggests that Flatout has offices in both the US and in Canada)
isnt america the name of the continent? 😄 When I wrote this, I specifically wrote the word America most of the time rather than US, and specifically mention BC to include Canada as well, but I totally neglected to include the word Canada, which absolutely makes me the fool 😔
@@NoPunIncluded "America" and "the Americas" are very different things. "The Americas" includes both North and South America. "America" refers to specifically the United States.
It's a bit like saying Ireland is in Britain instead of the British Isles. You'd get about the same look from an Irish person if you said they're from Britain as you would from a Canadian if you said they're from America. Also, I've typed America so many times now it looks wrong >.

From the Douglas Fir no less
I really appreciate yall's reviews, both informative AND entertaining!
The "Leaf Token" definitely has a pine cone on it.

Love Cascadia. Easy to teach and just a joy to play. Taught it to a few friends now.
I find Calico too hectic with needing that specific piece.

So. Is it like Calico, but it doesn't beat you up for your pocket money while you play it?
Probably one of my favorite games of 2021. Super easy but has a lot of crunch.
I would be really excited about a podcast dedicated to a historical tour of why NPI picked each LP that has been in the background of their videos. I might also need to recalibrate my excitement threshold
Maybe just putting it in the Patreon post for the video? (If it is already and I missed it - sorry Efka, blame the ever present brain fog!)
I think this sounds like a patreon bonus video at some point for sure.

Hollering for the algorithm! 100k lets go!!
Bear meat is pretty delicious, although make sure you have a suggested bear cull in the country you're buying it in.

How well does this work with 4 people?
The best Jonathan Richman solo record.
