Battle for Kharkiv: German MG3 jams forcing border guards to retreat

  • Ukrainian border guards fought Russia in the opening salvo of the Battle for Kharkiv. Video captures the Ukrainians in their foxhole listening to the Russians approach. They call out and get only gunfire in reply, so they shoot back and toss grenades. At one point, the Ukrainians attempt to unleash a German MG3 on the Russians. But the weapon jams and Kyiv’s troops cannot get it working again. Outnumbered and outgunned, the Ukrainians are forced to withdraw to friendly lines. This is thought to be the first firefight in the ongoing Battle for Kharkiv. Putin launched the surprise assault on May 10, capturing towns close to the border. Analysts believe the attack is a diversion, and not aimed at taking Kharkiv. The aim is to draw Ukrainian troops away from battlefields in the Donbas, which Russia is still trying to capture in its entirety and Putin says is the goal of his ‘special military operation’.

If a German gun does not fire, then the gun has not been properly maintained and cleaned, or you have simply forgotten to put the bolt on the gun again! I've been in the Bundeswehr for more than 20 years and I've never seen a MG3 fail!

@@Gorsky69 The entire armed forces of Ukraine currently consist of almost a million people - 650 people is not even a drop. Poor training of some units is the reality of this war - Russia pushes people to the front without caring about training and losses, and Ukraine, in order to survive another day, often has to send an equally poorly trained army. The Ukrainians are in a better situation because they defend in fortified positions where lack of training is less likely to end tragically. The Ukrainians were in a mess, but they withdrew from their position without any losses, and what happened to the attacking Russians who had no cover? They probably didn't gain this position without losses, and if they were unlucky and the MG3 worked, they would have been massacred.

@@veritaspk Dude, Ukrainian border guards undergo military training in Britain all the time, as well as joint exercises . More than 15,000 Ukrainians have received military training in Britain. In the summer of 2021, the State Border Service of Ukraine took part in the Ukrainian-British exercises "COSSACKMACE - 2021". The exercises involved joint planning and execution of battalion-tactical level operations. It was expected that the exercises would improve the coordination of actions of Ukrainian border units and NATO units during defensive and offensive operations.
Russia trains its own soldiers in its own state , operates with small forces and therefore has minimal losses . Just look at the Ukrainian military cemeteries with graves to the horizon and look at the Russian ones.
"I don't want to say anything against our partners, but they don't understand the specifics of our situation and how we act at all. Therefore, their training can be said to be useless," Opendemocracy said, quoting the statement of the senior sergeant of the reconnaissance company of the newly formed Ukrainian 41st mechanized brigade. That's what all Ukrainian soldiers and officers say . It is clarified that Western instructors had no experience in waging a real war and training recruits during conflicts that would be similar to the Ukrainian one. They don't know how to fight against Russia.

i have alot of experince with the MG3 family. That if not handled with preventive maintenace, is easy to have issues and jamming. The main understand required is mainly to consider every item in the lock as a replacable wear part. the extractor spring shall be replaced every 2000 shots, a easy way to evaluate it is by trying to push the extractor down with the thumb nail, if you can even move it, it shall be replaced. the extractor abit more but shall be often be replaced. most other parts as the ejector plade and firing pin (must be perfect round on front end) abit more shots but even small amounts of wear on the edge request replacement. other main issue is not completly clean and lubricated front pibe bearing. if thies parts have been replaced and rest is clean and oiled and it still jams, replace main lock spring and lock head. and i have never had and MG3 that dont run smooth and reliably after all thies tricks, and i fixed MG3 in firing postions like this alot of time and on alot of different weapons (10 years over live fire training/exercises/afghan). the standard gunner kit contains all the abouve listed items for a reason.

Asking for "geo location" for a withdrawal only after you have to retreat is an odd "strategy".. you would think long before any battle takes place you would have dozens of paths for escape, whilst at the same time have a forward reconnaissance unit (a camera) at least a kilometer from your trench.. on top of that have ALL your equipment checked DAILY so it is ready to fire immediately.. and last, have plenty of boobie-traps ready in case your trench is overran, so that if you have to retreat, you could arm various explosives around your trench, making enemy progress extremely slow.. and not sure how these guys weren't able to ask for immediate artillery/drone support, or at the VERY least draw some reserves, maybe even an AFV..

@@elektrotehnik94 lets hope so.. although tbh I've seen similar mishaps in other positions.. lack of situational awareness.. not having gaps of at least few meters between soldiers to avoid mass-casualties, neither in trenches, nor whilst moving.. lax approach towards constantly surveying surroundings for enemy movement and possible secretive approaches..
I can understand that after months and months of seemingly unchanging situation soldiers tend to "relax" and get "comfortable" within their surroundings.. BUT, I think it is commander's job to make sure that your troops are ALWAYS ready, regardless of how "calm" it may seem.. I mean for all you know your enemy might be digging a tunnel under you and placing tons of explosives, or secretly and slowly putting snipers within their firing positions.. and all that because you were "relaxed" and didn't think constant surveillance was necessary..
Oh, and another strange phenomena I noticed was that during intensive firefight no one, and I mean NO ONE is even trying to spot an enemy.. both sides just firing away to what they think are "enemy positions".. usually grenades are the actual thing that injures or kills the most troops.. you would think that in ANY combat you would want to have few things.. number one, an overhead surveillance drone, or even two, that would relay EXACT position of the enemy, as well as any armor (tanks, etc) and enemy strength in general.. after drones I would definitely want a close-by mortar team, and depending on terrain, at least one sniper team.. these two assets could potentially suppress any overwhelming enemy force, or enemy's attempts at "breakthrough"..
Anyways, lets hope Ukrainian warriors can continue to show bravery and fight valiantly.. lets face it, even the most "professional" armies in the world can make mistakes.. and tbh it is easy for us to talk about this stuff from the safety and comfort of our homes.. I'm quite certain that it is EXTREMELY different situation when you have to dodge artillery, drones and bullets in the heat of the battle..

That is because this is in the newly opend Kharkiv front. This was not an active front and ukraine did not have resources to invest right on the border as their air defences could not effectvly combat russian aircraft. Combined with that these troops are not proffesional soldiers and this attack came as a suprise thus no large amount of armoured vehicles and artillery.
More fortifications are built further inland.
Also remember this is not a american or western european militairy. There is no resources everywhere. Only on the active battlefield.this is not some marines in afghanistan. This is how active full scale war looks like. We in the west are just not used to it.

@@PeaceForEveryone91how many countries has the US/UK invaded illegally? Do you refer to their leaders as Hitlers?

@@PeaceForEveryone91 What? That is an oversimplification of the situation. Putin is exactly the opposite of Hitler. if he would be like Hitler he would have destroyed Ukraine in a few minutes. Yet as we know, less civilians perished in more than 2 years that in Gaza in 7 months. Putin is one of the last leaders with commons sense, honor and courage.

@PeaceForEveryone91 putin is not coming anywhere close to what Hitler did. If he was like that ukraine was gone done in a few days. You guys really miss Hitler or something or have no history knowledge 😂

@@dissco.partysan3333 no I am not, but you are the person who oversimplified.
You oversimplified hundred thousands life of both Russian and Ukrainian soldier and citizen which wasted by Russia invasion. You also oversimplified the actions such as attacking Ukraine dam by missiles on March 2024, or attacking social heating system in 2022&2023 winter, or shelling nuclear electricity factory etc. These activities executed under putin's command.
I think you should go to Ukraine destroyed towns and tell to people at there that is the honor from mr.putin?
