- This past weekend at Big Texas ComicCon, I had the honor to interview Mr. Big Daddy Cool Diesel Kevin Nash. Being the movie fanatic that I am, I opened up the interview talking about his role in John Wick. When he tells me the secret reason WHY John Wick let his character live, it blows my mind .

Francis was a hired security guy - to guard against everyone except Wick - you don’t pay your Security enough to stop Wick. They both knew that.
Doeray - No - Wick and Francis knew each other- both know what their jobs entail! They weren’t going to stand in the way of each other doing their jobs!
tcnascar. I'd agree. There's obviously a back story. Wick knows Francis well enough to know if he'd lie or not. He also didn't want to kill him...so gave him an option.
It's a part of the movie that, when I saw it the first time, gelled well with the rest of the Wick character and his motivation for what he was doing at that point in time.
The story of Francis and Wick, the history they shared what earned their mutual respect, would be great for a comic
No! Even if you pay them what it worth it, it´s not enough to stop Wick!
You don't pay your security enough to TRY* to stop wick
Francis and Officer Jimmy were the only ones who made it out alive.
the rule is you don't kill outside of the life. that why jimmy and Francis weren't killed they knew of the life but don't take part of it
plot twist, officer Jimmy is actually running the whole thing arranged for all this to go down for entertainment. In the end he kills john wick with a .22 short single shot rifle at a dog rescue where John Wick is getting a new dog.
You forgot about Aurelio the dude who has business fixing cars
Common fool
He isn't dead
true for the first film but he said "any of those movies"...Wick lets Common and Ruby Rose characters live in John Wick 2 rather than killing them and also spares a few adversaries in 3
Keanu Reeves actually said in an interview (when asked why he killed 80 people over a dog) that Wick only really wanted to kill Iosef (Viggo's son), but Viggo put 60 people between him and John, so he had to kill them, becausethey were between him and his target (also trying to kill him). Then Viggo killed Marcus, so John now had to kill Viggo.
Francis wasn't in John's way, so John had no reason to kill him.
John let him choose :)
This is such a BS about those 60 people. When Wick tells the bouncer that about weight, he replies - Двадцать килограмов (dvadcat kilogramov). That means 20 kilograms. Now how comes, does Wick did a quick calculation in his head how many pounds would that be ?
20k would be 44lbs. Its usually a pretty easy conversion you just multiply by 2.2
@@cameronmccoy5051 True, but it would still be a bit weird if Francis said 20 (which he did; his exact words were "20 kilograms") but he actually meant 44.
@@gpearce11 yeah, that bothered me. When I first watched the movie I didn't know what number he said, but "kilograma" obviously meant kilograms and the subtitles said over 60 pounds. Even if he said 30 kilos and they were translating that as 66 pounds which is over 60, it bothered me that they got loose and fast with the subtitles. Now knowing it was 20 kilos, its even worse.
Its almost as bad as Shawshank Redemption when Red says 500 yards is just shy of half a mile. (1760 yards in a mile)
Professional courtesy. Its not like Francis killed his dog or anything.
Ah yes, knife in aorta. Professional courtesy. He's so considerate.
@@FeyTheBin knife in aorta at least gives time for the paramedics to get there, instead of yanking it out and killing him immediately
It’s the most courteous thing to do in their profession
I was going to comment but saw this one, A little professional courtesy goes along especially if your John "Babayaga" Wick
plot twist in the 4th movie we find out he is the one that killed the dog
I hope they have Francis, Jimmy the cop and Charlie in part 4. One of the reasons the first one's still the best
and Aurelio
@@rimfirejunkie7427 Yes sir!! They have to shoehorn her in somehow.......
@@rimfirejunkie7427 Bridget Regan. Whew.
Dont forget the Oldman Dr
The English gun guy should make a cameo
60 pounds is about 28 kilograms. John kills 28 people in that scene. Honestly brilliant writing that the subtitles kinda ruined by changing it to pounds
I am not very good at russian, but he says 20 kilograms not 60. So the 20 seems reasonable then.
Just yanks being obtuse and insisting to use imperial
I think in Russia they use the metric system. So I dont think the subtitles ruined it exactly. Because in America we use pounds the translation probably just went ahead and factored it in. It does sound like he says the Russian word for 20 so yeah.
@@kennethlane7645 Dude, everyone bur Myanmar, Liberia and the USA is on metric
@@Peoples_Republic_of_Devonshire mate its not exactly something easy to switch over after its been ingrained into your education. its not like americans as a whole are opposed to it. it just sounds silly and frankly stupid to use blanket statements like that.
The "Thank You Sir" from Francis for being given the night off, That was from the heart
I also, just realized that he got more screen time than all the other lower level bad guys, combined, WITH John Wick. What a great, small part to get!
Definitely a great and memorable scene in a film that had many good scenes. I did not realize that he was spared because he gave John Wick the intel. Since JW knew Francis by name, I thought perhaps he just liked him and thought it unnecessary to kill him. Despite the body counts, Wick never seems to enjoy killing and does not seem to have any particular blood lust.
It really is a great scene. You can tell it blew my mind when he told me. Lol! I have an hour of footage from this interview and need to post it. Kevin Nash is a super cool dude.
Agreed. I thought it was just a friendly and subtle way to convince Francis to not interfere.
except when you kill his dog or steal his car
didn't have blood lust? dude he literally has gone out of the way to kill guys who are 100 % going to die from blood loss or shock and throws an axe all the way across a room and hits him in the head he shot a man in the head when going after vigor son in the bath house when he looks him in the eyes then shoots the guard in the head while locking those eyes and killing the main villain in 2 was all blood lust he enjoyed it he just doesn't like that he feels that way again because he literally buried it in cement
@@wellthen.......9384 no loose ends.
Francis: Turns around and looks John Wick in the eyes, "Thank you, Sir."
Gives me chills.
Chuck Norris checks under his bed to make sure John Wick isn't there, before he goes to sleep.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Chuck Norris taught John how to be AWSOME!
Wow, thats a really cool behind the scenes/inside look.
Right?!
“60 kilogram” was a slick, clever, brilliant trick!!! The writers are talented.
Except that it wasn’t “60”, The 60 was the conversion from Kg to Lbs
@@Mugdorna Yes. And they even did the conversion wrong since he actually says "20 kilograms" in the scene.
@@a10. Not really because he would be saying "more than 20 people", and Wick killed 28 people in that scene so 28>20. Only the subtitles messed up the scene. If the screen read "20 Kilograms" , it would have been spot on.
I do see where the match is a bit off though, so yeah.
@@artofmartialcinemaamc5334 Yes really, he say "dvacat kilogramov" = 20 kg = 44 pounds, so not over 60. We understand those words, they are almost the same as in our language - dvacet kilogramů.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie. Shows Wick’s humanity. Much like the flash backs of his wife.
He has incredible personality and a fine human being & wrestler he is
Respect to him 🙏
Golden shovel
He is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. After 10 mins, you feel like you've been friends forever. Super cool dude.
I had no idea Francis was letting Wick know how many men they had. I just thought they knew each other and Wick was giving him a pass. it makes sense though anybody in Wick's position would want to know that.
In Johns words he meant "Oh yeah, impressive, I would like to test that theory." 🤣🤣🤣 for a second I thought it was just making a good conversation.
Kevin Nash's cameos are all good whether it's as francis the bouncer in the first john wick movie or the russian in the first punisher movie Kevin Nash's is definitely an underrated actor.
He’s quite the character/personality.
He was hilarious in the remake of The Longest Yard.
Yep agreed 👍
But his voice was likely dubbed in this scene
I agree. So far every part I've seen him play in any movie has been from solid to real good. It's the quiet respect you feel between him and Mr. Wick without a lot of extra dialog that makes it so good.
Second punisher* they made one in 1989 with Dolph Lundgren.
nice detail, never thought of it like that
I agree! Hence my OHHHHHHHH reaction. :)
Francis probably was thinking: I'm out, man, I didn't sign up for this.
If I'm honest this was one of my favorite scenes in the film. It just showed a level of both professionalism and realism you don't really get to see in action films a ton when this came out. And I say "realistic" because I genuinely believe most people put in the same situation would just walk away especially given the circumstances "Protecting as spoiled douchebag" lol.
Because they were familiar. They knew each other from working together. As they said many times in the movie "professional courtesy."
Im sure him and francis had to work together at some point. knowing who their boss is..but i thought he helped him lose weight or something😆 but it was just a professional courtesy in the end..gave a him a chance..aint like he needed to know that intel because he was just gonna go in there and kill everything anyway😆
That makes sense.
I would've gone on believe that Wick let him go, just so he wouldn't have to kill him.
Kind of like a 'mercy' thing!
Whether it's true or it was really just john making conversation with an old aquaintence it's still a nice little scene
Interesting story
Thats crazy i didnt know that tid bit. Thats awesome to know
MIND BLOWN!
RIGHT?!
In a word: RESPECT
I thought 💭 I recognised Big Kevin Nash, but I wasn’t sure 🤔
But good to know he was in John Wick. 👍🏴
I watched it roughly 4 times before I realized it was Kevin Nash!
My favourite clip from that film.
Thats one of my favorite scene in john wick
When my brother and I met Kevin Nash he said this scene took two days to do and it was cold at night when they filmed it. Kevin also was super cool too he talked with us for five minutes
Kevin Nash is an enormous human being.
I looked like a Hobbit next to him.
Big Kevin was bouncing at the Cheetah in Atlanta when I was bouncing at the Limelight Atlanta. He is a good guy and a class act.
I thought they were just old acquaintances. This suggests that maybe John let Francis go because of the intelligence Francis gave him? Or maybe Francis was looking out for John and told him how many gunmen were inside.
Like he said, 132 lbs is a lot of weight.
Actually he says 20Kg (in russian) wich is less than 50 pounds
Guillermo Puertas The translator must have taken the night off too.
@@skyserf Yeah, they didn't even do the math ;-)
I’d love to see John Wick, in a very precarious situation and Francis returns the favor by helping John. Maybe a peace sign and walking away.
mind is blown
Cool! learned something new!
Another bad guy who lived is a real life NY doorman Was who in RL nobody really likes. But he must have had it on his contract to live.
It's amazing how you guys see this dialog .... man, I must be a doofus. Until this vid, I had no idea Francis was telling Wick how many people were in the building. Very cool dialog!
Almost wonder if they had him in the film as a callback to playing "The Russian" in the 2004 version of the punisher
The classic wrestling moment, Gunpoke of Doom, featuring Kevin Nash
John Wick is not a mad dog killer. He was there for a specific purpose...no need to kill an old acquaintance.
On off topic. If you notice when John enters the continental he gives the concierge a good coin. That was not for payment of the room. It was a tip for the information about the refurbished design and the ownership being the same. It is a membership hotel and you can stay there for free if your membership dues are paid.
Years ago I was at a vending machine and my bag of Doritos got stuck. I tried to shake this machine down for my snack and I could not budge it. Then these two ginormous arms appear above me and shake the shit out of the vending machine and I got my snack. Thank you Mr Nash.
It was a professional courtesy. He and Francis knew each other. Given that relationship, John gave Francis the option to walk away.
Cool that Francis was Spared {Thank U Sir} but also Jimmy the HOA Security Guard who thought it Smart & tell John {Well I'll leave U be} Goodnight John, Goodnight Jimmy.
i hope he returns. that was such an awesome scene
I would love to see John Wick 4 with the people he spared as well as others he may have had owe him in the past. I also like Zero from 3 to be alive and maybe play a bigger part in the story. He was a great antagonist and a real intimidating character that should be shown to have survived if anything
You know in part 4 they have to have his Mustang delivered back to him in pristine shape again.
@@stevenkloepping2953 possibly or a different classic muscle car
Kevin Nash tore his ACL filming that scene. Lmfaooooo
Would be a solid callback to have Francis be involved in Wick's recuperation, and just leave it at that. Respect given, respect returned and let them both be on their way.
I wouldn't be surprised. I don't see this franchise ending anytime soon.
Well, when a veritable angel of death very nicely and respectfully tells you to take the night off, the proper response IS 'Thank you, sir!'.
Francis probably went home and made love to his wife, grateful that he's alive. lol.
100% facts
Best answer possible.
Next day
Boss: "Francis why did you leave work early"
Francis: "John Wick gave me a day off"
Boss: "oh"
But this would never happen
Becuase everyone above Francis is dead
Well he calls him sir and asks if it's business so probably John still has some sort of rank in that underworld although he retired and being just a bouncer he respects John and doesn't give him any trouble.
Wick won't kill people who lost 60kg remember that
😂😂😂
Great actor man!
He said двадцать which means 20. 20 kilograms is like 50 pounds. So the people and the weight in translation doesn't really fit tbh
Professional Courtesy... Now John Wick owes you a professional courtesy as well Francis. You made the right choice.
Goddamnit I love this series double speck
"Thank you sir"
Wow... I didn't recognize him as Kevin Nash
Respect can get you a long way ;)
oh wow, I dd not catch that at all,KEVIN NASH an awesome actor, THE PUNISHER, WICK, and THE LONGEST YARD, amazing wrestler actor career..
Smartest henchman to have ever lived.
because Francise is one cool dude! In the movie and in real life!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Will see the Cop and Francis in John Wick the beginning. 👍
Having Francis back would be good for continuity of the story. Why not?
I agree
Scene rewrite: As Francis is walking away his phone rings with the Meow Mix jiggle. JOHN WICK: "Huh, Cat lover Francis?" FRANCIS: "Afraid so." JOHN WICK shoots FRANCIS.
I could just imagine kevin getting the phone call from the director.
KN: Hello
CS: Hi Kevin it's Chad Stahelski calling.
KN: Is this about the next sequel?
CS: I'm afraid so Kevin.
I'd love to see Francis return
What a bullcrap. They know each other. He wasn't an enemy.
Do you know how much weight 60 kilograms is? Doesn't make alot of sense in only a few years.
I agree; JW knew his name, was polite to him, and gave him his life when it wasn't an ideal tactical decision to let an "enemy" live. Yeah, they had an understanding of each other before that scene.
@@samuelbishop3316 My mom weighs 60 kg, that's a whole damn person, and unless Francis was obese there's no way a healthy person could lose that much weight.
Samuel Bishop john wick was retired for 5 years. It’s highly possible (though not for this film’s context) for someone to lose 60kg in that span of time.
Later -
Francis’ boss: “Why did you leave?”
Francis: “Mr. Wick gave me the night off.”
Francis’ boss: “…Oh. In that case, I’m doubling your pay.”
I had no idea! Awesome!
Neither did I. Hence my reaction! LOL!
Damn I didn't even know he was in it
Nah, Wick knew he was gonna hurt Francis quad and gave a night off. Francis quad must have been in a bad shape for Frabcis standing all night in that door. 😂
Would have loved to see plot twist where Francis repaid that kindness 🤞
In the future, maybe in the prequel of theYoung Mr Wick, there will be some detail to explain the connection between the both. Personal expectation, I hope Francis used to help John Wick, or saving his life, probably from the battle which John Wick killed the fomer boogeyman...
Yooo, The Russian from The Punisher lookin good
LOL! That's right!
he needs to be in the next one
I agree
I learned something new today
Ok, I didnt know about the 60 pound, 60 people inside to take care of thing.
I just thought they knew each other, like he knows a lott of other people in the hotel.
So why kill a friend, why waste a bullit and inform those inside by shooting or risking a fight that might inform another bouncer inside that something is going wrong, so he just told him to go home, knowing this guy will go home, go to ned and celebrate his breakfast the next morning as a gift from John, being able to have it.
But this info makes it even better.
So this scene should be seen as the shortest, kindest and most effective survey ever seen on screen. 😏
ok so that weight thing is a reference to the bad guy inside...I never knew that till now...thats some good stuff writing...
Wow I never caught that
Thats will be great if he returns and pay him back
I'd like to see Francis come back in JW 4 and help John
Now this is very interesting 😮Now i know
I thought so
Am i the only one troubled that he said 20kg. And not 60? And then there are people saying he said 28, which he did not. He said 20. And 20 isn't 60 it's about 44. And he didn't even say "over" at all he just said 20kg. I was so suprised nobody called this over while everyone praised all the small details they got "right".
Hoping for a NashBack
I think it was because he knew Francis was about 2 seconds away from tearing his QUAD!
John is a ruthless killer. But he is still a human being. Its what separates him from the murderers in the business. I'm sure if you were some hired thug protecting some bad guy and john came charging in,if you just put your gun down and put your hands up he would let you live without a second thought.
Francis : NWO 4 Life
John Wick: Too Sweetttt..!!!
Big Daddy Cool Diesel
If Francis didn't walk Wick would have blown his cover at the entrance.
What he actually said is "20 kilograms" which translates to 44lbs. And the subtitle says "over 60 pounds" Which I believe was meant to really convey there were over 60 henchmen inside. What confuses ME is why the kilograms in Russian weren't changed to "over 28k" to have it match.
John Wick is just the Thomas Jane Punisher just changed up a little bit when I was watching them I felt like man this is just the Punisher movie just better represented and told 🤷🏾♂️
Francis was just a doorman doing a gig. He probably didn't even work for the club, but whatever firm the club hired its doormen from. Killing him just for being there doing a job would be a bit cruel; unless he did something to try and interfere with Wick, it would be like killing one of the waiters.
this could have been interesting but!!! The Audio is so bad I couldn't make out what they were saying = FIX IT
You're the 2nd person out of 387K to mention this. Based off that data, I am gonna take an educated guess that the audio it just fine.
Good thing it wasn't Deadpool coming up behind him like that. We all know how he feels about "Francis"
