- It is estimated that over 40% of all farm accidents (fatal and non-fatal) involve livestock. While many are associated with the handling of bulls, most accidents occur during routine tasks such as herding, loading, drenching, vaccinating, testing and handling cows at calving.
18% of all farm fatalities are caused by livestock. Cows with calves pose a significant risk, accounting for 35% of livestock related fatalities. Farmers should ensure that all livestock are handled in a safe manner and that safe handling facilities are always used.
Before attempting to carry out work with animals, plan the task. Ask yourself, do you have a clear path for the animals, are facilities secure, do you need veterinary products, do you need help?
Take action to prevent injuries associated with livestock on your farm.
