Let's Cosplay! : Convention Packing

- Hey Everyone! Packing for a convention can be an extremely stressful process and after all the tetris work and frantic running around the possibility of forgetting something is extremely high.
So to help all you packers out I made this guide to show you all not only how I personally pack for a convention, but also to hopefully pass on some helpful tricks that will make your experience just a little bit easier on the mind.
If you're transporting things that are much more fragile, or planning to take a plane to your convention I would definitely recommend a much stronger (possibly hard shelled) suitcase vs. the the type of suitcase I'm using in the video. Since I'm driving to my convention this type of bag is perfect for my needs!
In the end how you pack your things is going to be determined by exactly what you're taking to the con. Plan ahead with your costumes for the travel you'll need to make to get to your convention and everything should go smoothly.
P.S. If your pet is nosy and always in your business like mine is be sure to pack a lint roller (or two).

Extra tip I like to do because I'm way too meticulous about packing, make an duplicate packing list so when you leave the con, you can make sure you grabbed EVERYTHING you brought with you (no one likes having to call hotel lost and found because you left half your stuff behind lol)
That's actually a really great step! Im usually neurotic and just pack all my bags, put them by the door & then search the entire room meticulously (even under bed skirts and stuff) for any little thing that could have been looked over lol. Your way sounds much easier & less stressful, thank you for sharing!

It's really the best because you can tie it closed and they're bigger so your costume fits more easily than folding it up in something small!
This is super helpful! I always have a hard time packing for conventions. I usually end up overpacking because I'm worried about forgetting stuff. I'm definitely going to color-code my lists from now on. Thank you!! ^^
Oh yeah I alwayd pack extra everything but the list really makes a huge difference. the color coding makes it so much easier too

Maybe an little hint from me, I allways wrap shoes in a plastic bag so there's no dirt or stones in that bag

Having a list is really important. I have made a list for every single gown I have made and worn for the local cons I attended (their just an hour drive away so hotels arent a necessity) and sometimes one gown has 20 pieces including the heavy petticoats and high heels which makes me feel better when I have a checklist of everything I will be wearing that day.

Its all fun and games until youve got cat hair in your eyes, mouth and lungs LOL. Hes all over the place and there is no avoiding the orange fluff!
HatterInsanity Hee Hee! I have 5 very helpful cats. One is diabetic and gets to come to CONvergence with us. Thank Heavens for the pet friendly hotel across the street from the CON. Cat floof is just part of life.

I'm going to a convention for the first time in my life and- this was really helpful. But, I'm still debating who I want to be exactly.
I always say to go with a character you really love! That way your first con will be even more memorable. Alternatively something really comfortable is also good so you can navigate your first con more easily! Personally my first convention was pretty small and my costume was simple and comfortable so I had the ability to do both!

Hey question.. how do you transport a pre styled wig with no foam head..?
Hi there! Epic Cosplay Wigs has a video with a good method for prestyled wigs that arent too extravagant ua-cam.com/video/_FxBxZxfkVI/v-deo.html - but if its a very simple style that can be spruced up in a hotel room you can always put it back in its original bag! Any style thats really extreme or fragile I would recommend getting a wig head just for peace of mind. Theyre usually fairly cheap!
But how do you carry all those boxes on a train???
you will have to pack accordingly for your mode of transportation. for a train I would suggest maybe one smaller box and the duffel bag. I went by car so I was able to fit all of these things. even for a plane you will have to adjust your bags and what you take by their storage. good luck!

LOL man me too. I usually end up with one super large bag, a backpack, a smaller bag and then boxes that have styled wigs in them... give or take
I always have a large luggage, dufflebag, Make up bag, backpack and Props. And that’s just me, my other group has to fit their stuff in my car 🤣

Hey I just had a question, where do you put the boxes? Do you just put them in the suitcase?
You can put them in the suitcase if theres room, but usually I just pack them in the car separately. Im 99.9% of the time driving myself so I have plenty of space and in the hotel ill adopt a small corner out of everyone elses way to place my things. Of course youll just have to plan for the space your hotel/transportation allows when packing things! I know some people will wear their more styled wigs if they have nowhere else to put them on the way to the con!

What if you have a lot of body armor how do you get that in there?
Hi! That's going to depend on your transportation. For a lot of armor pieces I would recommend a hard shell suitcase for more intense travels like on a plane or somewhere you wont have the luggage in your possession at all times. If you're driving you can still use a hard shell suitcase but a cheaper method would be a plastic tote! Of course use bubble wrap, packing paper or even fabric strips/towels to protect your pieces from banging against each other or the paint scuffing. I hope that helps!
