    I don't know why I didn't come here first when looking for an isolation tutorial. Don't get me wrong, I love DrexFactor, but I feel like you break things down into so many smaller bits. Thank you for another amazing tutorial!!! :D

    I LOVE the concept of exiting a stall in a different direction than you entered it. I just started playing with it about a month ago and it just allows for some crazy patterns.

    Hey ppl. This is a great tut. After you have learned to isolate with each hand, you should exercise the movement around 5'09". That shot is really genius and helped me lots!! Thanks Nick.

    I have been having trouble getting "folding" down with hula hoops and this move looks just like it. I want to take up poi to help me with my hooping. I had a go this week with some oranges in socks and doubles hooping has given me a head start with poi!

    ThanxLots 4 that tut! Excellent shot around 5'09" Never seen that angle. Helped me to understand that move completely. Very funny explanation: "...and you try to stir the soup around the poi" - LOL

    @multuminparvo Length is up to the artist. Arm's length is common, but it's really up to you. Try shortening your leashes to see if you like it any better. Mine are about half the length of my arm, and most people I practice with have theirs about that length as well.
    If you like the long leash but want to buzzsaw more comfortably, try wrapping the chain around your hands once or twice prior to moving into the buzzsaw.

    Man practicing isolations has really built my shoulders up, you know what you could make poi a type of exercise that is actually fun. Maybe even get professional athletes on board, I mean football players do ballet to build up their core and balance, why not teach quarterbacks some weaves or flowers???

    If the string on the poi is too long, it makes it harder because you have to make too large a circle with your arm. However, I found this extremely easy to do. It's also a lot like lassoo lasoo lasso (SP?)

    Thank you... most people these days think this all spawned from EDM. Glowsticking has most definitley had an influence on both the popularity and the moves that people create, but
    It's hard to know where to go, if you dont know where you came from.

    @aniki91344 it took me at least a month of practicing everyday to get it down. It also depends what you're using. Glowsticks are hard because of how light they are. try a set of poi balls if you haven't yet. It helped me a lot and now i finally have it down.

    Ahhh! I can get the feel for it vertically like stirring soup but when I bring it up horizontal I end up doing extensions.. Would more weight make it easier? I have 70g beanbags in my sock poi but I'm thinking of getting some 95g under-filled juggling balls

    I have what might be a silly question, but anyhoo...
    What effect does the weight/type/length of string of the poi have isolations?
    The poi im using have really long strings (too long for buzzsaw long) and a heavy end in comparison to the rather light string. Ive been having quite a bit of trouble doing isolations, but they become soooo much easier when I shorten the string around my finger.
    So any answers? :-)

  • @multuminparvo
    @multuminparvo 14 років тому

    OK, I have a question for you... how long is your poi. I got mine at just arm's length, up to my armpits right? but most of the people I see performing with them seem to be much shorter.. I am using fire poi.. two finger handles and chains, but moves like the buzzsaw seem a little close for comfort with this length. What do you recommend?

  • @Plurfect8

    i have a couple things to say. first what was that group at the begining of the video? it looked like a spiners paridice. i want to go. second, i still suck at isolations..

  • @aniki91344
    @aniki91344 14 років тому

    So after like, 4 weeks of constant practice, I got my right hand to do isolation alright, not great, but passable... my left hand handles it a little under passable... but it's got the right idea... When I try to do isolation with both hands however, my brain begins to malfunction, and my left hand spins the poi at full blast while my right hand slowly loses concentration and loses the isolation... How long did it take everyone else? Am I the only shmo having trouble with this?

  • @Ravn8
    @Ravn8 16 років тому

    hey meenik i know this is kind of a nub question but im trying this with glow sticks and i am blaming the failure on the weight of the glowstick. should i invest in some sock poi to learn these?

    what are your poi's made of? Is it a ball in a sock or tights? Im Maori...I find this interesting :-) Is poi dancing an artform to make the pois look pretty and make patterns? I have been using the poi in Maori dance since I could hold them...we have four different sort of poi ...double short poi, single long, double long and four poi although the last (4 poi) is really just two actions..the butterfly and the forward and back. Do these pois in the video come in different sizes?
