The trans probably needs a shift fork and maybe a slider-usually an easy fix. Dead and shorted batteries will wreak havoc with the electrical system and can damage the diodes in the alternator. May want to check the alternator wave pattern, if you decide to keep it longer.

My dad had one for about almost 80k miles bought used from a jeep dealer with about 100k. He replaced the AC compressor, the radiator, coolant reservoir, and front driver side wheel bearing. At 150k miles the transmission failed and it was replaced with a junk yard one that worked well however shifted harshly when going into overdrive, so shutting off overdrive fixed that. At about near 180k miles one or two of the cylinders lost compression (my dad mistakenly used thicker oil since he wasn’t aware about weight, which might had contributed to the problem). He decided to sell it as is to the mechanic and bought another car. It was fun and great in the snow even with all season tires, however reliability simply wasn’t there in comparison to my mom’s 00 Sentra which was scrapped at 200k due to rust, but barely had any problems in its entire life.
My guess is that you have a bad battery and a bad Alternator. When the voltage regulator goes bad it can overcharge or discharge your battery which is bad and it can also spike putting out more voltage which will cause you lights to be really bright and then it can reduce the voltage which will cause you lights to be dim. That grinding noise could be a bad throw out bearing or bad fingers on the pressure plate.

Hey Randy, Many cars that are deemed a total loss do not always get branded salvaged. Some states have laws that if a car is a certain age (by model years) it keeps it's clear title. Each state has different laws and definitions of their total loss threshold. Another thing is that many times an insurance company will total a car just because future problems could arise that are related to a claim made, which by law they would have to pay for(for example, flood cars). The chance of having to buy a main computer for the car or an engine will make an insurance company total the car instead of trying to save it. This is because the last thing an insurance company wants to do is to pay out twice. They don't want to pay to fix it, then have it go over their state's threshold for a total and then legally have to pay out the market value to the owner as well. I was an insurance adjuster for 3 years in the north-east, just thought I'd some info. Good luck with everything
Thrust [throwout] bearing, simple cheap fix - ident spring for first gear and change the battery - subscribers want to see you fix these problems not put them back through auction?
Hey randy just some advice , when you get a car with a completely dead battery don’t jump it and try to let the car/truck rely on the alternator with a dead battery. The alternator will go up and down in voltage to 18 volts . That’s 18.volts to the computer and other accessories . NOT GOOD .. that’s how computers get smoked. In this case I bring jumper cables and hook them to the big jump box on the floor of the car
This truck worth may be $300 and what he should do is leave that junk right there since it was listed as a all wheel drive and it was 2 wheel drive plus remember there is no proof how much the truck cost
Yeah, the lights will go out if low voltage causes an interrupt in the communication bus. The transmission sounds like its low on fluid and the fact that you've driven it might mean it's too late, but some transmission fluid couldn't hurt.
funny had this happen to my 98 grand cherokee it ended up being a loose negative battery cable lol i would load test the battery and also have the alternator tested but all in all a good laugh seeing this one
I wouldn’t want it. I could tell from the beginning it was junk. I’ve seen so many cars that I can tell. I used to drive cars through the dealer auction. As well as through an insurance auction place in my area. You can tell when they are junk. I would take it right back through the auction again or take it to copart and sell it there.
The flashing lights are the alternator and grinding noises. Check what voltage the alternator is putting out. If it's all over the place, then it's the voltage regulator in the alternator. I have a guy that fixes them for 40 bucks. The noise is the bearing in the alternator
I know it’s hot and you don’t have a lot of time, but I personally would like to see you pull a transmission or a slightly bigger job then usual. I think it would be good content and generate more UA-cam money. You should take a pole and see who’s interested in that type of content. 👍
Randy, don't feel bad. I bought an 07 liberty listed as mechanical damage. I couldn't find any issues with it until I brought it home. I couldn't figure it out. Took it to the local mopar guru. Hes had it for over 3 months. I paid 2200. 2700 after fees.
Falsely advertised I would try for a refund I know it's as is where is on auction sites but as it was listed as a all wheel drive and it's only 2wd I bet you could get your money back.
I fixed a Grand Cherokee Laredo 2003. Replaced radiator, hoses, fan, serpentine belt, battery, windshield wipers... With no jacks, no special tools. I didn't spend my time complaining. I just did it.
Nice looking jeep liberty. I'd everyday drive it. Especially since both of my vehicles are down. Trying not to lose my ass. Trying to figure out a side hustle that's legal... Done too much of the illegal side hustling.
@@onetouchgarage4503 it's the financial side I'm having difficulties with. The situation has my financials all screwed up. The vehicles I can get the work done if I could come up with money for parts. Thanks for the good wishes though. Have a great week
Monty The Troll Hunter trust me I’ve been there too! Have you thought about parting cars out for some extra change? I’d get no title cars for $100-300 bucks sell parts and chop it in quarters to scrap it! It’s a good way to get a bit of money coming in if you have some left?
When I had my 2004 Jeep Liberty it was very bad. The fuel pump was bad. The battery was good. Every time I’d turn off and do something else and come back and turn in on it had a crumpling noise so I’d always go to the trunk lift up the trunk mat and hit the fuel pump and it’ll be ready to go. This happened millions of times. I sold it right away.
Pop the caps on the battery and add water if needed. the state farm thing monitors your driving so they can charge you every time you brake to hard, speed, acceleration on your bill
The flickering of the lights turned out to be the Voltage regulator on my girlfriends jeep. Same symptoms battery light and flickering lights. We changed the Alternator and it fixed the issue.
my Jeep did the same exact thing when my battery died. Literally the lights and the dash everything was flickering and my mile an hour and my RPM gauges were going back and forth too.
It will make it. it is a weak battery. replacing it will take care of it. Same thing happened to my Tundra the other day, new battery solved everything.
My dad had a 04 Jeep Liberty Renegade he bought new, it's setting now, died sometime last year. He put over 300k miles on it. Always thought they were tough little truckettes His was 3.7 tho I believe And the hatch release is on the key.
Hi Randy good video. I had a 05 liberty 2.8 diesel lights did that put new battery in it 1 week later the alternator melted from the charging wire to the inside thank god mom stopped at the grocery store it cooled down.
Just buy a battery for it let it run for at least a couple hours. I had a problem like that with the dodge neon. The alternator was bad as well. 1500 Texley not bad you could always swap the motor those motors are easy to swap out and work on for being a 2 Wheel Dr..
Before you dump that Jeep at an another auction, ask Weird Beard to check out the trans. It may need a new first gear syncro? Might be worth having him do the recon?
I know it wasn't fun for you, but I really enjoyed that content. Coming across the cop was just icing on the cake. Well, my brother, live and learn. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised. Cut your losses at Copart.
I have a 02’ Liberty Sport. It’s the 3.7L 6-Cyl automatic and it is an absolutely wonderful car, gets done what I need it to and then some but I heard negative things about the 4-Cyl engine. If you want to put on bigger tires and go mudding you may have difficulties with it.
I have one of these. An 03, 3.7 v6, manual. I loved it, only because it was bought used UNDER WARRANTY. Lol. They replaced the rear end, the clutch once, then the whole gearbox after that, and several other things. On the bright side nothing has broken in it in 5 years.... because it's been in my garage in pieces for the last 5 years. Lmao. I blew a head gasket, then rebuilt the engine and never put it back in. Now it needs several other things, like tires, brakes, suspension fluid changes everywhere, etc because it's been sitting so long. Maybe soon I'll start ban up on that. It was a fun little buggy to drive and I kinda miss it. Reliability...meh, not so much. Lol
If the battery is OK take a look at the TIPM under the fuse box. This is a common failure on these Jeeps. If wipers come on whenever they want and car has many electrical funny stuff going on it's the TIPM.
Voltage regulator on the back of your alternator. You have the "red battery light of death". You may need a new battery but I bet the problem is your voltage regulator, same happened to me on my 08 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited S. My dash lights would flicker, my radio would stay on, my nav once started up onto the "Jeep" home screen and froze there, had to unhook the battery to turn it off. I put a new proper Valeo regulator into the alternator, no problems anymore. Check out Legit Street Cars video on the Mercedes "red battery light of death", it is a Mercedes electrical system.
I had a 2006 Jeep Liberty and I loved it. Until the window motors went, all of them. I never used the back windows, so it couldn't of been from wear... Then the a/c went. Next back to the dealership with maybe 70,000 miles and I bought a Jeep Compass. 2 years later I bought a Wrangler. Still have it, and may be the one car I have until I die.
Bad battery will do that. Without proper voltage they freak out! Computers don't read properly. Trans is another issue. Pull the handle to open the glass. Great video Randy! Waiting for more 59!!!!!
we have a similar thing in the uk but most new drivers get one due to crazy insurance prices. many are installed directly to the engine, like what i have
A bad battery will cause those icons to come on and shut off it's nothing to do with the engine or transmission the battery will control any warning lights if it's good or bad
we have a 05 liberty KJ with 298,000km on it. the same 3.6L that we first bought at. 200,000km. Running strong but in my opinion its a money pit to take care of. Especially the fuses. They are notorious for fuse problems
The popping out of 1st gear and grinding means the first gear synchronizer is bad, the previous owner must have liked to come to a stop in first gear/shift into first gear at low speeds a lot. They're brass and get worn down by improper shifting
randy that's a telematics device which people can request from their insurance to try and reduce their insurance premiums. it does that by telling the insurance your driving style, when you drive, the rate of acceleration and force of braking. you don't need it, YOUR RANDY!!
Sounds like it had a bad battery, bad connection to the battery, bad alternator, bad ECU or some combination. Plus it likely had a bad throw-out bearing or synchro (or both) in the trans. Seeing 18 volts on a battery is not a good thing. That's like melt your battery down voltage regulator has shit the bed levels of excessive voltage. Modern cars don't have a separate voltage regulator though, it's built into the alternator now.
Chrysler voltage regulators hate dead batteries. All that crazy stuff will stop with a good battery. My PT Cruiser did the exact same thing after a jump start on a bad battery.
I had a VW that acted like that and it had a faulty electric steering sensor that was putting an intermittent 60amp load causing a lot of flickering - it was better to take out the fuse for power steering until fixed. Your car needs a trans and a fix to the battery/alternator problem.
I have a 2004 v6 and this thing is a money pit. At 110k ball joints went (all 4). Then at 135k, 3 more had to be replaced as well as the water pump, radiator and valve covers. Valve covers would have been cheap but alllll the heating/cooling lines cover it so the labor is intensive. Oh and by the way, control arms replaced twice!
None of those repairs are major, and should be expected with any damn near 20 year old car with well over 100k miles. If the motor and trans are still kicking then it's doing its job as well as should be expected for any old hooptie.
The chattering almost sounds like it could be the clutch, not the transmission. I would think a new battery would fix the flickering light problem. Chrysler vehicles are very sensitive when it comes to voltage.
Maybe an alternator or an electrical short. However I wouldn't mess with a transmission problem Maybe talk to Ammco, the transmission might be an easy fix?
To all the haters. He wont get what he put into the car if he fixes the trans. It makes sense financially to let it go. People complain that Randy cant manage his money, but also complain when he makes smart financial choices.
The state farm device is the drive safe beacon, used with the drive safe app it monitors your driving habits and if you are a careful driver will give you a discount on your insurance.

Most had the 3.7l, some had a 4 cyl, and a few were diesel.
The 3.7 was decent. The 4.0 was a GREAT engine though.
Hey Randy,
Many cars that are deemed a total loss do not always get branded salvaged.
Welcome to another copart walk around let's start off with an 05 Jeep liberty lol
Thrust [throwout] bearing, simple cheap fix - ident spring for first gear and change the battery - subscribers want to see you fix these problems not put them back through auction?
When are we rebuilding something?
maybe he will call his channel auto auction polish and clean
Hey randy just some advice , when you get a car with a completely dead battery don’t jump it and try to let the car/truck rely on the alternator with a dead battery. The alternator will go up and down in voltage to 18 volts . That’s 18.volts to the computer and other accessories . NOT GOOD .. that’s how computers get smoked. In this case I bring jumper cables and hook them to the big jump box on the floor of the car
Paid about $1500 too much for that thing 😬
Agree. At $400 there is room to fix it and get a small profit.
Definitely. With all those problems it’s not worth fixing.
1500 u taking a screwing all kind of ways... that car worth 650 bucks for all it's trouble's
This truck worth may be $300 and what he should do is leave that junk right there since it was listed as a all wheel drive and it was 2 wheel drive plus remember there is no proof how much the truck cost
I seen them go for $500.00 on a V6. 3.7...
I would say the voltage regulator in the alternator is going so replace the alternator and a battery
It needs on alternator load testing.
The voltage regulator on your alternator is bad that is why your voltage keeps going up and down but it's not the battery
He swapped the battery in this same video and showed the issue was just the battery.
there must be some compensation for false advertising when advertised a 4x4 and isn't
8 model years affected:
2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, more
Average mileage:
108,840 (35,000-200,000)
Drive Trains affected: 2WD, 4WD, Automatic Transmission, Manual Transmission
Definitely throw out bearing not a hard fix good thing it's not four-wheel drive who will drive the be fairly easy
Randy, Thanks for all you do! Best Channel on UA-cam!
Love your content Randy, keep it up!!
Yeah, the lights will go out if low voltage causes an interrupt in the communication bus. The transmission sounds like its low on fluid and the fact that you've driven it might mean it's too late, but some transmission fluid couldn't hurt.
take it back they sold as 4 wheel drive and it's not
funny had this happen to my 98 grand cherokee it ended up being a loose negative battery cable lol i would load test the battery and also have the alternator tested but all in all a good laugh seeing this one
I think I see a Jeep Liberty coming up for a give away. I would still want it.
Yuppers. I'd have Austin help out anf he can use the content.
Monty The Troll Hunter I'm sure Austin is tied up in Ranger projects. Otherwise I think that's a great idea.
Plus Randy I'm guessing is a pretty good customer of theirs maybe they want to help out more then just some random guy?
I fixed a Grand Cherokee Laredo 2003. Replaced radiator, hoses, fan, serpentine belt, battery, windshield wipers... With no jacks, no special tools. I didn't spend my time complaining. I just did it.
Nice looking jeep liberty. I'd everyday drive it. Especially since both of my vehicles are down. Trying not to lose my ass. Trying to figure out a side hustle that's legal... Done too much of the illegal side hustling.
Monty The Troll Hunter takes a while to figure out your place with cars, but once you do it's good! Keep on pushing bro
@@onetouchgarage4503 it's the financial side I'm having difficulties with. The situation has my financials all screwed up. The vehicles I can get the work done if I could come up with money for parts. Thanks for the good wishes though. Have a great week
Randy should pay you to come out to AAR HQ and do some work for him!
Monty The Troll Hunter trust me I’ve been there too! Have you thought about parting cars out for some extra change? I’d get no title cars for $100-300 bucks sell parts and chop it in quarters to scrap it! It’s a good way to get a bit of money coming in if you have some left?
@@ethancedrik well I'm in Colorado. Don't think that'd work... Lol
Pop the caps on the battery and add water if needed. the state farm thing monitors your driving so they can charge you every time you brake to hard, speed, acceleration on your bill
my Jeep Liberty has been sitting for 2 year and runs well. I got a brand new battery too. It's the alarm system. Disconnect the alarm system.
My grandma has a 2011 Liberty Limited that she bought new. Surprisingly the Sky Slider still works but electrical issues are crazy. It's dog slow too!
Randy, do you have any comeback as it was sold as a 4x4 and it wasn't?
The flickering of the lights turned out to be the Voltage regulator on my girlfriends jeep. Same symptoms battery light and flickering lights. We changed the Alternator and it fixed the issue.
my Jeep did the same exact thing when my battery died. Literally the lights and the dash everything was flickering and my mile an hour and my RPM gauges were going back and forth too.
Flood damage did that to my Honda Accord wagon.
Cleaned all the earths, and it was sweet.
Gearbox sounds DRY.
It will make it. it is a weak battery. replacing it will take care of it. Same thing happened to my Tundra the other day, new battery solved everything.
My dad had a 04 Jeep Liberty Renegade he bought new, it's setting now, died sometime last year. He put over 300k miles on it. Always thought they were tough little truckettes
His was 3.7 tho I believe
And the hatch release is on the key.
State Farm module is the check your driving for cheaper insurance. Basically, if you are a safe slow driver, you can save money.
I recall that the fuse boxes of some Chrysler cars are known to fail. Before you send it back, maybe you can check the wiring going into the fuse box.
Before you dump that Jeep at an another auction, ask Weird Beard to check out the trans. It may need a new first gear syncro? Might be worth having him do the recon?
Popping out of gear is usually caused by a bent or worn shifting fork. The screeching sound could be caused by a bad throughout bearing.
The model of jeeps during 2005 and 2008 had that problem!1 when the battery goes bad everything goes crazy!! change the battery to start with
I had a 2006 Jeep Liberty and I loved it. Until the window motors went, all of them. I never used the back windows, so it couldn't of been from wear... Then the a/c went. Next back to the dealership with maybe 70,000
miles and I bought a Jeep Compass.
I had a 2003 Liberty with the same thing it was a bad battery internally shorted out..
Jeeps aren't what they used to be but I still.like them
That state farm thing monitors your driving. The better you drive the better your discount for next renewal
we have a similar thing in the uk but most new drivers get one due to crazy insurance prices. many are installed directly to the engine, like what i have
A bad battery will cause those icons to come on and shut off it's nothing to do with the engine or transmission the battery will control any warning lights if it's good or bad
Too much drama , Randy ! Your supposed to be AAR -fixed the transmission !
Great video content Randy! Your videos are always fun to watch! Keep it up brother 😎💪
we have a 05 liberty KJ with 298,000km on it. the same 3.6L that we first bought at.
1st gear syncro never heard of one
randy that's a telematics device which people can request from their insurance to try and reduce their insurance premiums. it does that by telling the insurance your driving style, when you drive, the rate of acceleration and force of braking. you don't need it, YOUR RANDY!!
Had a similar issue with the lights flickering on a 05 Grand Cherokee, was the turn signal switch/actuator. Replaced and never had the issue again.
Loving the content lately bud
If its battery good another common cause is the alternator you can try put a friction modifier in it and check the clutch plates
I've got a jeep liberty and I love it it's only got 148,000 and it's a 2005
Maybe an alternator or an electrical short. However I wouldn't mess with a transmission problem
Maybe talk to Ammco, the transmission might be an easy fix?
To all the haters. He wont get what he put into the car if he fixes the trans. It makes sense financially to let it go. People complain that Randy cant manage his money, but also complain when he makes smart financial choices.
The state farm device is the drive safe beacon, used with the drive safe app it monitors your driving habits and if you are a careful driver will give you a discount on your insurance.
