Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila is divided into Moulvibazar Municipality and 12 union parishads: Akhailkura, Amtail, Chandnighat, Ekatuna, Giasnagar, Kamalpur, Kanakpur Union, Khalilpur, Monumukh, Mostafapur Union, Nazirabad, and Uparkagabala. The union parishads are subdivided into 196 mauzas and 429 villages.
Moulvibazar was formerly a Hindu-majority region before Partition. Ethnic population is 63,466 (3.31%), mainly tea tribes and indigenous groups like Tripuri and Khasi.
Population Total 360195; male 175832, female 184363; Muslim 283868, Hindu 70005, Christian 5988, Buddhist 73 and others 261. Indigenous communities such as manipuri and khasia belong to this upazila. Water bodies Main river: manu.
Moulvibazar district is located in the north- eastern borderline of Bangladesh. Maulvibazar subdivision was established in 1882 as the name of south Sylhet under Sylhet district and was turned into a district on 22 February 1984. The region was named after Hazrat Shah Mustafa (R) in 1960.
