  • I noticed my FT-840 would drift around when I first started the radio. It would also change after a few QSOs. After looking around on the internet, it appeared to be a common issue if you didn't have the TCXO option installed. They are not easy to come by anymore so I insulated the reference oscillator and adjusted it against WWV

My 840 was drifting like crazy and very quickly, I did this adjustment and it seems to have stopped acting weird. It still drifts in frequency when it's warm, but it does it very slowly. Not perfect, but better than spending $79 on a TCXO.

It's really noisy here around the 10KHz and I was just wondering if there's another frequency I could tune it to.

Я заменил на керамический конденсатор, частота перестала плавать ;-)

I'll bet this was a temporary fix, as the root of the problem is on the PA side.

Thinking about purchasing one of these, but the guy said a new memory battery was installed and that when you turn the power off, it does not hold memory. Is there a solution and if so, what would it be, or is the radio worth buying with it having that issue? $400 and includes FM Module, power cable and mic. Thanks.

LiL Hank I just bought one of these and I'm having the same issue as Jeff. I'm going to try his fix and see what happens. Apparently heat is an issue with these radios.
You can't find the TCXO oscillator anywhere.
