@PhyZeik a grift is kind of hard to explain in a short amount of time.
You hear of Charlie kirk? He is a grift(er)
Generally, a grift is a thing people glomb onto and pretend to care about.
Not because of some wholesome reason, like them actually caring.
But usually grifters glomb onto trends and pretend to be wholesome to make money.
The thing that the grifter glombs onto is the grift.
It's kind of confusing if you don't already get it.
When it comes to tech, it's not that it's a grift. The word kind of gets applied sarcastically / ironically.
Or people trying to sell you the latest trend without having all of the info. That can be a form of a grift, but does not fully encompass grifting.

@Abraham Linkoln Why not simply visit MDN site ? It provides reliable resource for web technologies, from HTML, CSS, JS, and Web API. I used to like download ebooks for learning software techs; for JS, I read Thomas Powell and Fritz Schneider, although didn't finish; I also downloaded David Flanagan ebook. But then I tried to read from MDN and found it fit to my need.
Since then, I always use MDN for learning resource of web techs. I never read books for web tech anymore. Every time I need to learn new software tech, I visit its official site/documentation. There are exceptions where I need to learn from book, though, such as when learning C++, I will go to Bjarne Stroustrup book.

You're the best teacher on UA-cam, man!
I'm far from being a guru in Javascript, but since 2016 I made great progress just by ditching jQuery. My advice, for what it's worth, is that you ditch "syntatic sugar" libraries and stick to vanilla code until you know how the tools you use might work under the hood. That helped me a lot in learning JS.

so if a person wants to learn React or any another modern framework, first he/she need to learn JavaScript?

    • @randomuser66438
      @randomuser66438 5 років тому

@@FUNEDITS_ Of course. You have to learn JavaScript's syntax. After that, you have to learn to manipulate the DOM. React/Vue are just abstractions that make DOM manipulation easier. They are workarounds for technologies that weren't meant to be used the way they're used nowadays. HTML and CSS were meant for static webpages, but the web evolved into full blown webapps such as Facebook.
They can't simply deprecate the technology completely because so many people rely on it.
This an endless cycle. They evolve HTML and CSS (and JavaScript) with compatibility in mind, and then again, and then again... This is why we have front-end frameworks, so we don't go crazy with the state of the web today.

"Work with all three, one will stick out"
True AF. I started by checking Angular out, and it wasn't my thing. Then I checked React and I kinda liked it way more, but even then I tried Vue. In the end, I decided to go with React for more than just a couple reasons, but I know I'm 100% capable of learning the others (not completely mastering, but being able to develop something? yeah) in time to be productive.

Nicely explained Brad. As a newcomer there's a million options floating around out there. The first framework I started getting into was React and MERN as a first stack, simply because it came back in a google search as a trend leader in terms of usage at the time. It's a huge rabbit hole though and now that I'm starting to work with react more I'm finding a deeper appreciation for this perspective. Hope you're feeling better!

I learned Angular and loved it. Then I started hearing the rumors of its demise, and I thought maybe I should learn React. So, I did. I didn't like React as much cause it's more of a library than framework, but I quickly realized it would force me to be better at Javascript, so I stuck with it. Plus it seems there are more jobs out there for it. But I may go back and work with Angular too, cause I just love it.

Great video as always! I'm a beginner concentrating on the MEVN stack (Vue.js on the front end), and I stressed over frameworks for a while too. What I've been doing is pushing myself through some no framework (and even no Bootstrap) projects, where I just use raw Javascript, templates, and Webpack, and just go go go. What that forces me to do is look things up when I hit a wall - oh wait, how do I clone a template? What's the shadow dom, etc.? How do I do a data-driven rendering without Vue's facilities?
I wrote a fake restaurant page in pure HTML/CSS/Javascript that really taught me a whole bunch about the fundamentals. And more to the point, doing that takes some of the mystery out of what Vue.js and the other JS frameworks do underlyingly to make things happen.
Not meaning to shamelessly plug on Brad's channel, but here's the link to that page on my portfolio site - it has links to the deployed sample page and the code on github:
    lstavenhagen.com/restaurant-demo/
Yeah it's uglier than sin, but it kind of came out pretty good. The point being, as a beginner in web dev, if I can do it anyone can. So I'd say definitely follow Brad's advice and do a few things with just the basics of pure HTML/CSS/Javascript. Learn how to build DOM subtrees in raw JS, or with HTML templates, learn how to use the shadow DOM for encapsulation, etc.....

I also suffered from this framework analysis paralysis and decided in the end to go with what we use at my new job ie Angular. This is after investing a lot of time into vue and the majority of my career spent using jquery + .net mvc. At least now I can focus on delivering a project instead worrying over which tool is best to use. Also, I guarantee whatever framework you use, the end user of your site/app couldn't care less as long as it looks nice and works. That's all it comes down to in the end.

it depends on where you are looking for work, but if you're doing front-end, just be really solid with JavaScript, html, and css. Framework wise, pick either Angular (popular for enterprise apps) or React and I guess do VueJS (or React/Angular) for your fun pet projects. Just get really good with either Angular or React, while keeping your JavaScript fundamentals fresh at all times.

Currently I'm a contractor, so I do jobs in React & Angular for different large companies. Once you learn one framework, it's fairly easy to apply the same concept and patterns while using another. The most important thing is differently understanding the deep dives of Javascript.

yeah, VueJS, Angular, or React have the same concepts when it comes to parent/child/reusable components and lifecycle hooks. It's moreso a matter of getting used to the 'proven' patterns or specific syntax for these modern frameworks.

This is why I love your channel. You're realistic without being pessimistic unlike some other UA-camrs I know. *cough* Chris Hawkes *cough*
Feel better man. Keep up the good work.

Great insight Brad, yes just focus on native JS to begin with, ES6 etc. frameworks come later on.

Firstly I’d like to say I appreciate all your videos, they’ve helped me improve a lot as a developer and your advice has also helped me mature as a person looking for a job, so thank you. Besides that, do you think you can make a tutorial on using WebRTC, simple-peer, and a signaling server?

My complaints aren't around the frameworks directly, but the convoluted bootstrap/build systems they all bring to the table. That's one of the things I appreciate about Vue, the ability to just drop it into a project and get to work. I run into the same problem with Java projects as well. It drives me nuts that I can download NetBeans, but then as soon as I try to initialize a new enterprise project I have to deal with errors because everything uses a Maven archetype and requires extra downloads. That's all fine and dandy when you aren't on a closed network.
It's frustrating when the tools get in the way of the simple joys of coding.

I agree, try it yourself and see which one works for you and stick with it. Then later on you will easily pick other framework and libraries.

It is much better now, but there are a few that are coming back with the concept of giving up virtual dom/shadow dom and use directly Web components like stencil or svelte i think it was the name. Good video. Oh and learning a framework over the other is not that dramatic, you can apply the same concepts, after learning one the learning curve for the others is better. P. S. I'm sick too:( couldn't upload today :(
