So glad I found this! I worked at Story Land in the 1980s, and was as an operator of this ride in 1985 and 1986. Each day there were three employees assigned to it. One would do the front, loading guests into the bullet, one would do the back, unloading guests, and one would walk around inside observing the operation of the ride. We'd take turns doing each task throughout the day, a half hour at a time, if I recall correctly, but everybody wanted to be inside. We wore headsets to communicate with each other about the ride's operation, but we also developed secret codes to alert each other to the presence and location of pretty girls and supervisors (actually, Story Land didn't use that term - they were called "coordinators"). One time in a secret area behind Blowhard, I accidentally kicked loose an air line and there was such a loud rush of air and swirl of dirt and dust that I thought something had exploded and I was in the middle of it! I was also part of a small crew that came in every weekend in the wintertime to shovel all the way around the dome. This was such a great video - even though I walked through that ride hundreds of times, I'd forgotten many parts of it, like the mining robots. Sincere thanks!
Don good to hear I was not the only one to have odd moments working inside. While in the control room enjoying some air conditioning and possibly to pick up a headset I reached over some electronics only to get the most powerful electric shock I've ever known. It caused the arm muscle to cramp up and require that I reach over with the other hand to pull my arm away. Needless to say I was more careful in the future.
@@bmorin1969 I'm sure there are dozens of similar stories among us Dome operators. I seriously thought I was in the midst of an explosion, it was so loud, and dirt flying in my face. I probably screamed like a little girl. Keith Duquette knew exactly what had happened and ran in from outside, and "saved" me by reconnecting the air hose.
Once they build a time machine, I will go back to June 13th 1981 to see Voyage To The Moon's opening ceremony and ride it myself. If I was working at a Time Travel place, I would give all Voyage To The Moon fans a free trip to Storyland in 1993 on June 13th 1993 too. So every fan of this ride can celebrate the 10 years of this great and beautiful dark ride. Rest In Peace Mr Blowhead, The Wizard, Sally, The Ice Cream Cone Pixieland Band, and the Floaters. I will bring you back some day Voyage To The Moon.
Thank you so much for putting this together. I have been going to Storyland every year since I was 4. I am now 35 and this ride was my favorite. I think I cried for a few days when they closed it. I’ll never forget the feeling I had when I went to Storyland the first time when the ride was no longer active. Felt like a part of my heart had been lost forever. It was always the ride I looked forward to when going to Storyland. Truly made me believe in magic as a kid and is one of the reasons I am a professional magician today. The magic this ride brought to my heart as a child back then was all brought back to me like it was yesterday when I watched this video. Truly the best ride I have ever been on and had the biggest impact. Thank you Storyland for creating such an amazing ride and inspiring a young boy to believe in magic and that anything was possible.
Thank you so much for the comment! 👍 I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. It sounds like Voyage To The Moon really really had a huge impact on you, especially on your career. I also cried when I learned they were closing it. I can also remember going to Story Land in '99 and I bet that you and I felt the same exact emotions. Everything just felt off, it was a terrible feeling. Again, thank you so much for your kind words!
Hey thanks! I've never been to the west coast before, but I have a lot of respect for the dark rides of Knott's (Calico, Timber Mountain, Bear-y Tales, Kingdom Of The Dinosaurs, etc...).
thats pretty cool that the park actually let you have one of the ride vehicles and a prop from the ride. take care of them to the best of your ability. story land is my home park and these items are part of it's history.
This video was beautiful and so touching. I watched it my sister and my mom and we all loved that ride. We reminisced about our happy and vivid memories especially when we went to Nostalgia Night. Thank you for creating this and sharing. It was very special.
Thank you so much for the nostalgia! I went to StoryLand every summer as a kid, and now I can't wait to take my son there in a few years when he's old enough! I loved this ride. I remembered the building and the cannon, but its been so long I couldn't for the life of me remember the ride itself. It's so amazing that they sent you not one, but two pieces of the park. That truly speaks to the kind of wonderful people who own it. Well done!
I remember returning there with my niece hoping to share my favorite childhood ride that I use to go on 4-5 times or more every trip I took there, but sadly was so heartbroken to find it replaced with a ball launcher arena. Really was in disrepair, so it was understandable, but it's so sad to lose that piece of Story Land that made it so iconic for me as a child.
My grandparents used to take me and my younger siblings annually to Story Land in the 90s. I remember the Voyage to the Moon ride and being sad when then got rid of it. This is a great trip down memory lane! Thanks!
I'm from the UK and never visited the States until I was an adult, but I'm of the right era being born in 1982:- I love the 80s vibes, it reminds me of some defunct dark rides we had in the UK, namely 'fifth Dimension' at Chessington World of Adventures' and Toyland Tours at Alton towers as well as the original journey into imagination at EPCOT, it also featured a giant cannon external set piece a decade before Disneyland Paris would use one on their Space mountain. Amazing.
I grew up in NH and lived near Story Land! My grandmother was mother goose at the park for many years. I loved finding this video since it was one of my favorite rides in the park. So excited to be able to see the footage of the ride again!!
Thank you for making this. I too loved going on that ride at the same time you did! A great trip down memory lane. Amazing the park management responded and gave you one of the bullets!! Epic!!
Nice work! Other than the Polar Coaster, this attraction stood out in my memory from childhood. When I returned as an adult with my kids many years later, "Voyage to the Moon" was gone!
Ryan. Your effort here is truly amazing. I was fortunate to work at Story Land. During the late 1980's As a rides operator I logged over one hundred days on "Dome" as we called it. That was spread across 3 or 4 seasons. Your knowledge of the scenes and ride elements is excellent. One thing that you may not be aware of is that this ride was initially named the "Space Fantasy Ride". By 1990 at the latest it had been renamed to the Voyage to the Moon. Also, the end scene with bulett returning to the White Mountains was originally a laser against a screen that displayed a spiraling design. Unfortunately the laser was unreliable at best and was replaced with the ending animation scene.
Hi Bryan! Thank you so much for your comment 👍 I really appreciate it. That's so amazing that you got to work the ride! And over one hundred days too! I did know that it was originally called Space Fantasy. I actually have a postcard that has that name on it. I chose to not include that in this video just to eliminate any confusion. However, I did not know that about the projection scene at the end. That's crazy that they had a laser in that scene before! I had no idea. Again, thank you for your kind words 👍 it really means a lot. Thanks for watching!
@@themeparksandme My understanding was that Peter Stone named it Voyage to the Moon in honor of Jules Verne. The original plans and drawings which were in the control were all labeled with the Voyage name. The fantasy name tied in with the park's tag line " Where Fantasy Lives"
@@bmorin1969 Thank you for sharing that! 👍 For a ride that is 36 years old (and has been gone for 21 years now), I'm learning new things all the time. I think I have the general idea of it in my head, but it would be incredible to see how it actually was.
I remember working under you in the 90’s, Brian. You were a great coordinator. I miss those days and consider lucky to have known Bob and Stoney (sadly, Ruth has passed before my first summer), and to have have my very first job being at Story Land. Those were great years.
Hi Ryan I am absolutely fascinated by your videos and your dedication to Story Land. I am a dedicated fan of Story Land’s white mountain competition Santa’s Village. I was an 8 year helper for Santa and have loved everything about the white mountains and amusement parks ever since. In fact until the COVID 19 breakout I was a college program participant at Walt Disney World. I love your videos and just wanted to say from one theme park enthusiast to another I’m a big fan of your passion for amusement parks and the industry

Hey Ryan GREAT video!! We just used this for our podcast to experience the voyage to the moon one more time and this was fantastic! We were saying how we always use Martin's Vids on the show and it's great we got one close to home at a theme park we grew up with and love that you were able to replicate the awesome work he does! Thank you for the memories!
Hey! Thanks a lot! That means the world to me. I have always been so grateful that I properly documented this ride before its closing. I am a huge fan of Martin Smith, so it was only natural for me to model this video in his style 👍 I'm interested to hear this podcast. Where/when would I be able to find it? Thanks again for the kind words.
@@whatsdis1181 Hey guys! I listened to the podcast the other day and it was hilarious hahah. Very entertaining. I was surprised to hear that you guys played a few of my other Story Land videos as well. I wasn't expecting you to play the entire Voyage To The Moon video! I thought it was just going to be the actual ride-through like it is when you do Martin's videos. But then at the end you guys explained why you did that haha. Again, thanks for the nice things you said. Great job 👍
I love that they sent you a piece of the ride!!! I remember hearing that the company that made Voyage to the Moon possibly made at least one other similar to it? Thinking there's no truth to this, but I've always been curious.
Hey thanks for watching! I'm 99.99% sure that Bradley & Kaye designed Voyage To The Moon specifically for Story Land. I don't think I've ever heard of a ride that's similar in design, but it would be cool if there was 👍.
I regret not going on this ride so much, when I was a little kid I was scared of it because my tiny toddler brain thought it literally shot people into space. So I never went on it. One of the biggest regrets of my life.
My favorite part of StoryLand definitely has to be the Loopy Lab. I’ve never actually been on Voyage To The Moon before because I’m a 2000s kid (born in 2005). I’ve seen lots of videos and read a lot of research on Voyage To The Moon, and the dark ride looks extremely cool, like if it was outer space meets Alice in Wonderland. I really miss the old version of this documentary with Space Age Love Song by A Flock Of Eagles, Elegia by New Order, and Halcyon On and On by Orbital. But the music in this new one is okay. What I think should’ve happened, not trying to be mean or anything, but it’s just me trying to fix theme parks, Story Land would’ve kept the Voyage To The Moon ride and expand storyland but putting the Loopy Lab in the NorthWest area of the park. Plus my favorite animatronic is Sally and my favorite area of the ride is the Ice Cream Cone Pixieland Band Part.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad that you liked the older version of this video 👍. Unfortunately due to copyright reasons, I had to change those songs to royalty free music. I agree though. I think that they could have (if they wanted to) updated the technology in Voyage To The Moon, but also create a Loopy Lab-type attraction elsewhere in the park.
ThemeParks&Me no problem. TBH, I am mostly a fan of rides like Gravitrons, Dark Rides, Balloon Chase Rides, Musik Express Rides, Tilt-A-Whirl Rides, Flying Scooter Rides, Tea Cup Rides, Ferris Wheels, Carousels, Wave Swinger Rides, Scrambler Rides. But my favorite type of rides of all time are dark rides. The 1960s-1980s were like the decades of dark rides including this ride, Adventure Thru Inner Space, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan’s Flight, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, If You Had Wings, Haunted Mansion, It’s A Small World, The Mine Of Lost Souls, Journey Through Imagination, World Of Motion, Horizons, Sydney Ghost Train (which unfortunately caught on fire in 1979), The Great Movie Ride, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Spaceship Earth, and Maelstrom, but my favorite dark ride of all time is The Mine Of Lost Souls in Canobie Lake Park. It’s a shame that this ride, Adventure Thru Inner Space, Snow White’s Scary Adventures (Well, in Magic Kingdom), If You Had Wings, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (Also In Magic Kingdom), Journey Through Imagination (Original), World Of Motion, Horizons, Sydney Ghost Train (which unfortunately caught on fire in 1979), The Great Movie Ride, and Maelstrom are now closed and I never got to go on any of them (mainly because most of them were closed before I was born).
Space Age love song is by Flock of Seagulls...not Eagles ...wish I could've gone on this ride was the cannon still there in the early 2000s as a relic I want to think I saw the cannon but not sure
Amazing video! I almost rode this as a kid, but I chickened out at the last second due to the massive cannon looking intimidating. Stupid me! Could I please use a small section of the ride footage for a Story Land review I am working on? I will be sure to provide full credit and give a link back.
Hey man. My Wife and I stumbled upon this. She worked in the Park as a kid. She remembered everything about this. Are you a local in NH? Great hookup on a Golden Bullet.
Hey! Thanks for watching! Yes, I'm a NH resident. That's awesome that your wife worked there and remembered everything! Did she happen to work at the Voyage To The Moon? Or was it elsewhere in the park?
@@themeparksandme Manchester here! Anyway, she worked at a ride called the "Silver Mine". She can still do the whole monolog, "Welcome to the super spiffy silver sifter...". She was also a clown, and opened up the gift shop. Worked there from 94-98ish.
Sometime in June StoryLand is having an old employee get together at the Park. I'm pretty sure we're going to go. I'm willing to bet your video is going to pick up more views in the future as that gets closer.
@@SpudMcMuff That's great that Story Land offers those former employee get-togethers. I don't think most parks would do something like that, that's awesome. We're going to one of the Nostalgia Nights in July. It's 21+, open until 10pm, and they'll have golden bullets on display for guests to use for photos.
Great job. I may be able to help with some of the inaudible parts but I only have the first draft script, changes were made in production. I was only at the mission control section recording. I will share that for Sally the Sea Serpent they had the singer record with a mouth full of water. I am not sure if that is the take they used but I will verify and get back to you.

Great job 👍
Thank you!!!!
ThemeParks&Me I’m sure you are right. I think supposedly they made at least one other dark ride though? That’s the story I never could confirm.
Also, this inspired me to dig up our ride video :P ua-cam.com/video/PZwE9XgGS2A/v-deo.html
Absolutely! Looking forward to seeing it 👍🏻 thanks!
@@themeparksandme Thank you very much!
@@SpudMcMuff Manchester here as well! I love the Los Bravos Silver Mine! That's awesome that she's got the spiel memorized hahah.
Hi! Thanks for watching! 👍 That's incredible that you actually worked on the audio for the ride! I'd be very interested in seeing that first draft! That's amazing. That's funny about Sally though. It doesn't sound like they went with the take that included the water but that's interesting that they had planned that. Would you happen to know if a master tape of the ride's audio still exists somewhere? And if so, has it ever been digitized?
@@storylandcentral8446 No sorry to say that was the only one but I did get to fabricate parts of the worry whortals.
@@themeparksandme Sorry it took me this long to reply. I would be glad to get you a copy of the first draft does private message still work on youtube? The master tape was never digitized they just kept duping off I hope a dupe master. According to David Norton there were a lot of dupes. If you can think of some way to get me a mailing address let know. TTFN
@@snelled Hi! No worries about responding! Thank you so incredibly much for your input on Voyage To The Moon. I'm absolutely ecstatic for this draft! Please feel free to email me at themeparksandme at gmail dot com or you can do UA-cam messenger!
@@snelled hey snelled! I was just curious if you were able to find that draft of Voyage To The Moon?
is this what Dumbledore did during the summer?
If I knew that all id have to do is write them a letter to get a prop I so would have lol. Are you originally from the area? We would be the same age. I might know you lol
Also can't believe you got a bullet! Loopy labs is absolute trash compared to this ride. I don't even go in there with my kid when we go to story land lol
Hey, thanks for watching! 👍 Hahah I know, right?! When I wrote them that letter ages ago, my goal was to try to get them to change their mind and reconsider closing the ride. I would have never in a million years expected that they would actually give me anything! lol. Yeah, I think that Loopy Lab is still good, but it's not an equal replacement. And I'm from Massachusetts originally 👍.
I remeber crying as like a 5 year old because " the big face blowing on me"
Looks super cheesy now lol
amazing what can be done with a litle chicken wire and a lot of yankee know-how
Was it supposed to be terrifying?
No, it was supposed to be fantasy-like.
@@themeparksandme I would have been scared to death as a child! Maybe it was better in person but that wizard seemed creepy. Anc some of the music and sounds.... idk maybe I was a weird kid. I was afraid of gremlins and ET.
@@Ohgeezelouisee I definitely understand that. I think the general population of kids who experienced that ride thought it was scary, including myself lol.
@@themeparksandme sometimes adults have very different ideas as to what "fantasy" vs "fear" means to kids haha.
