  • This dead mall's latest and current name is "Citi Plaza" located downtown London, Ontario It started as Wellington Square in 1960. In 1980, it was renamed "London Eaton's Square" with Eaton's as its anchor store. It was the first enclosed climate-controlled shopping hub, otherwise known today as a "mall".
In 1989, Campeau Corporation bought it for $175 million and expanded it calling it, "Galleria London" with Eaton's and The Bay as its anchor stores. It was now Canada's largest shopping center at the time. It took up 2 city blocks and still does bordering King Street, Clarence Street, York Street, and Dundas Street. There is a public library at the Dundas Street entrance which we did not look at today.
By 1993, the mall was 35% vacant.
In 1996, RHK Holdings acquired it for $51 million.
Eaton's and The Bay left in 2001 when only 20 stores were left open.
Citi Cards Canada leased 114,000 sq ft for offices in 2006 and it was renamed "Citi Plaza" in 2009.
Citi Cards moved out in 2016 but their name remained on the building.

I actually miss malls, they were the place to be in the 70s-80s. Now all the 'malls' where I live are open-air, and it's AWFUL shopping in the summer when it's 100 degrees and humid as hell. I grew up in Buffalo, and can't imagine that concept working up there! Thanks for the tour, brought back a lot of great memories. :)

Kinda sad to see these malls empty. It seems we are losing our connection to other people.

Interestingly, all the malls in my country, New Zealand, are still extremely popular and are packed full of people shopping every weekend. Long may that last.

I know this area of downtown. My wife and I stayed in the Armoury hotel. My favourite Hungarian restaurant on Dundas street just closed its doors after almost 70 years.

Thanks, Dave! Yeah, that hotel is called the Double Tree now but used to be The Hilton. I used to hang out here in the early 80s when downtown was the place for teens to hang out. London’s downtown scene was really hopping during that era and before it. It sure has changed now!

When I first came to London, it was thriving and full of wonderful stores. At that time it was called the Galleria Mall.

Hey Pam, Great video and documentation of a dying mall, one suggestion would be to just go with the natural sound and acoustics of the space as it completes the record authentically rather than adding music which devalues the effort you have gone to, keep up the great work, I am glad you survived some of those risky older videos, OMG the basements!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I appreciate your feedback on keeping the ambient sound in the video. I did consider that, but to strike a balance between engagement and copyright concerns, I added very light background music. I wanted to ensure the overall experience is enjoyable. Your input is valuable. Thanks for being part of the journey!

The place is beautifully maintined, but I'm another who's wondering how much longer Citi Plaza can stay open. I live in Bloomington, Indiana, in the almost center of the U.S. and we have the College Mall which is a fraction of the size of Citi Plaza. Our mall is connected to a Target store and maybe that's keeping the mall open. Bloomington is a university town and I was told years ago that our Target is the busiest in the U.S., at least when students are moving in, but that may not be true anymore. (Walmart came to town and has actually bussed college students to their location.) Near the College Mall a movie theater just closed and I think it may have been the last regular movie theater in town. I haven't been to the local mall in months. I wonder what's ahead for it in 2024.

Hi Tiki. I’m not surprised all these mall are emptying out. People are buying on line to get whatever they need or just want . My Daughter orders everything from pocketbooks ,cloths, candles shoes etc…. She pays less and gets it no time at all. If they send her the wrong thing she calls them and they’ll tell her to keep what she has and they’ll send her what she originally ordered. They said along time ago this would happen if you could order on line stores would start closing up . Nice video ! ❤️

Very odd but the mall in Cornwall Ontario is in the same predicament. The anchor store there was Sears, once they closed the whole mall emptied I think due to low traffic, high rental fees and the cause culprit I think was the lack of parking and the inconvenience getting in and out of the property. Good one Tiki, certainly an eye opening trip into the very recent past. Thanks for this one!

Someday someone from the younger generation who never knew malls, will have an epiphany and say hey, what if we put all the stores I want to visit together and inside so I don’t have to go outside when changing stores
Kind of agree with some folks who jokingly have said they should make old malls into retirement villages.

Our generation mourns the demise of the malls we grew up with, the result of online shopping. I wonder if our parents and grandparents mourned the demise of locally-owned stores and shops, the result of malls.

Shopping malls were boomtowns in their day but a lot of people don't shop like they used to. Maybe they just got bored with malls. There's only so much you can do to keep them bringing people in.

Shopping malls seem to have lost their appeal for some reason. I personally have been through several over the years and found they had nothing I was very interested in owning.
And sometimes that was because I could own it for a better price elsewhere. And now we have several ways to shop online and so many lazy people who'll shop online...even if
it means they have to wait a week or more for delivery.

    • @TikiTrex
      @TikiTrex  9 місяців тому

I agree. Online shopping seems to have taken over, and bricks and mortar stores are carrying less stock, so you have to order in from them, too.
