I was part of (half owner) a rag-tag Bush Division race car team back in the 80's. In 1984' at Charlotte Motor Speedway as we were pushing our car to go up to and through Nascar's Inspection Station, Richard and Cale Yarborough had their two cars backed-in to the fence directly across from the Inspection Station. I said to the other guys on my race team, "I'm going over there and shake hands with Richard and Cale. Wanna bet! To which they all responded, "Man, you're crazy! They'll blow you off so fast it'll make your head spin. Then you'll look like the fool." But that didn't stop me. I was game! I walked up to both of them and introduced myself to them. Told Richard that I only lived about 6 miles from his house. He smiled real big and reached out and shook my hand. Then Cale reaches out and shakes my hand too. My pit guys about went bonkers! Why you ask. Before I walked over there I bet each one of them that both Richard and Cale would shake my hand. Cost them each $20 bucks each! But that's not why I did it. I knew that I might not ever get another chance to meet and shake the hands of two of the greatest Race Car Drivers that ever lived. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Just when I thought I new everything about Richard's career along comes this AMAZING video... Bravo! Thanks so very much for making it! God bless you all!
Great video. I didn't know half of that story. Love the Petty family & sure wish Adam was still with us to add to the legacy. He was such a kind and honest respectful young man.
Became a King fan in 66 when I was 5 & my Father took me to Riverside to my first ever "Cup Race" Richard didn't win that day, but Dad said before the race that I had to pick a car to pull for & there was just something about that 43 number & that Petty Blue color that I really liked, so I picked it as my car! I've always been proud that I picked RP before anyone ever called him "The King" & I could not have picked a better "Roll Model" than Richard Petty, you'll never know how proud & happy I was when Richard beat Cale to the Daytona line, I was screaming my fool 23yr old Richard Petty loving head off, just like that 5yr old was doing back in 66! God bless all The Petty's, Mike & his lovely wife as well 🙏
One of the greatest days of my life! Richard Petty, Ronald Reagan, and the 200th victory for The King all wrapped up in one race! What could be better? Thanks Richard, Kyle and Mike Curb for reliving that special day!🇺🇸🏁
I was there as my family camped in the infield from 76-94. We would always cook out after the Cup Race. SS and FHP made us leave the infield immediately after the race. They told us "When they drive back by this location if were not packed, they were going to tow our camper". We were gone within 1 hour, it was all to protect Reagan.
Awesome interview! The story behind the story was so interesting. I remember that 200th win like yesterday. What are the odds that a Red, White and blue car driven by the best driver ever! On the 4th of July, with the president there, winning his 200th race. Against one of the hardest drivers to beat ever. It's incredible to think of! 🏁
Yea that picture of Air Force 1 landing parallel to Petty on the backstretch is iconic Americana. I remember watching that whole race. Another great day in America.
Mike Curb is a a very special person. He purchased RCA studio B in Nashville and he leases it to the Country Music HOF for a dollar a year. If you’re ever in Nashville, do the tour. It’s awesome.
Ive always wanted to hear the back story behind Mr. Curb, his relationship with Earnhardt and The King's 200th win!! Thanks for doing and sharing this!!! The Andy Granetelli mention really takes you back to STP's origin in NASCAR with the Pettys. Kyle brought up something I'd never thought about withcthe 7x Chanps' cars. Thanks for sharing this gem with us! God bless you one and all! 🏁🇺🇸🏁
I wasn't at the race, but my connection to that day was through my brother in law, who was on the Secret Service detail traveling with the President to the race. There was a huge amount of procedures that had to happen days before the race, and during the race, to prepare for the Presidents visit that day.
That was the most perfect historic day in Daytona, Petty wins 200th Nascar race, President Reagan and Cale Yarborough went in the pits after getting beaten to the line. DYK: Petty's 200th win Pontiac is currently on display at the Smithsonian Museum in DC. I got to see it back in 1990 while touring. I was in awe back then. I never knew the late Robert Yates provided engines for Richard Petty. Later that year, Reagan won a landslide victory for his second term. That trip to Daytona powered to a big win with 49 out of the 50 states.
The backstory behind Richard Petty’s 200th NASCAR victory, as told by the car owner, Mike Curb is a fantastic account of one of the most iconic wins in the history of the sport. 1984 was a troublesome time in NASCAR. A businessman from Charlotte NC, J.D. Stacy, started throwing a lot of money around the NASCAR Cup Series garage and managed to buy up seven race teams. In doing so, Stacy bought the contracts of some top NASCAR drivers, including Dale Earnhardt, Neil Bonnett, Tim Richmond, Joe Ruttman, and Sterling Marlin. A season before, NASCAR’s biggest name, Richard Petty saw his reputation tested after a first place finish at the race at Charlotte. Post race inspection revealed that the engine in the #43 car was outside of the rulebook specifications. Petty was docked over 100 NASCAR Championship points, but the win was allowed to stand. Afterwards, the Petty’s basically closed the Petty Enterprises race shop and Richard Petty went to drive the #43 for Mike Curb Motorsports. Richard Petty went on to win the July 4, 1984 Firecracker 400 at Daytona for Curb Motorsports. The last lap battle between Richard Petty and Cale Yarbrough was exciting all the way to the finish line. The event was being attended by President Ronald Reagan, who took time after the race to share a meal with the competitors in the garage area. From that moment own, there was no doubt about Richard Petty’s status as the “King” of NASCAR stick car racing. Thanks to Mike Curb for sitting down with Kyle and Richard Petty to tell the backstory of Petty’s 200th victory.
@@GenoSalvatithat’s correct. Kyle became the driver for PE with the #7 7-11 ford. In ‘85 Kyle would leave with 7-11 to the Wood Bros. Maurice would try to run an unsponsored #1 ford out of level cross in ‘85 but it only lasted a handful of races before they closed shop. Richard and Inman would reunite and reopen PE in ‘86 with the droops nose Pontiacs.
Wow, great interview!! I watched this race live when I was a teen. At one time there was a rumor that there was a 'big engine' in the car for the 200th win. Any truth to that? (btw... if it was.. I don't care. Its still a historic win, and if it wasn't caught back then... then its fair game!! LOL). King Richard is looking awesome these days!! Love it!
I’ve seen Curb’s name on all kinds of race cars and never have seen an interview with the man. What a fascinating back-stage story of NASCAR (and racing in general) from a different point of view. Question: How unique was it to sign a sponsorship agreement that ended with the sponsor getting the cars? Thanks King and Kyle!
I watched it on TV, Richard is My 'Nascar Idol ' a fan since I was 12yrs old, Went to His last in 'Atlanta ' Had Tears my Eyes, knowing it He last Race, And Kyle (same Age as Kyle) and watch as Stories asI can on video You Tube, built Petty Models and Will be going to The Museum as soon as possible "God Bless 🙏 The 'King' #43 🙏 Thanks You, 'Richard Petty '❤
Wow, great story. I never knew the Mike Curb side to the story. Every Petty fan needs to go by the Curb Motorsports Museum in NC. The 199th win car is there, unrestored just like it was on the day it won at Dover
Wow love this what great interview I learned a lot I was involved with Saunders leasing one the sponsored the Truck that pulled the trailer I was at cms when they presented it truck and trailer wrapped up
I was there at the track…….two weeks later lol……So my dad and i would go to Daytona every year for Vacation and people were still buzzing about the 200th win and President Reagan flying in during the race….But i have pictures of me at the track and they didnt charge us a dime to walk in and look but hey it was the 80s
Richard listens to Kyle about as good as Kyle in younger years listened to Richard. Lol Talk about driving for Mike Curb, and Dover then Daytona... immediately starts talking about Daytona!!!
Things that make you say hmmmm. How many caught the part of how Les Ricter started helped create the team of Richard Petty and the pairing of him with Buddy Parrot, as a way to suspend Maurice for a year. For the engine at Charlotte. It was never told that way. It was always explained as a way for PE. to grow Kyle’s career without being in the shadow of Richard. I always wondered why Maurice didn’t stay in charge of PE. and be Kyles crew chief. It seemed to me, back then, that Richard was selfishly kicking Maurice out out PE at the time.
As I recall the entire PE was thrown into chaos by the big motor controversy and subsequent suspension. Richard moved to Curb out of desperation, and Maurice went into a depression. When did Dale Inman return?

Fascinating! Never knew anything about Mr Curb.

For a guy turning 80 later this year. Mike is in great shape and sharp as a tack.
Mike Curb is a fascinating guy with an incredible life he used to have a singing group in the 60s

Nice summary - I believe the Petty Enterprises shop didn’t close and Kyle was the new driver for the Randleman/Level Cross team (what was left of it).

My Army Buddy in Daytona was at the race near the finish line, he claimed Cale lifted to let Richard take the 200th... 🏁

99.999% = THANK DOUG HEVRON (OSWEGO NY) SUPER MODIFIED DRIVER
Was Cary Agajainian, part of the Curb team in ‘84?
This is a good one. I never knew Maurice was banned. But maybe he was re-instated later on when his sons started racing.
Richard listens to Kyle about as good as Kyle in younger years listened to Richard. Lol Talk about driving for Mike Curb, and Dover then Daytona... immediately starts talking about Daytona!!!
First win for Kyle was in the 7 Eleven for the Wood Brothers
Bravo, Mr. Petty (STP 43). The only way anyone will reach 200 wins is if they clone you.

Mike also stirred up the music industry when he kicked bands off his label for promoting drugs.
