I know some characters have to die for the story to move forward, but I personally feel like Kevin was such a good addition to the team as a younger sibling to the boys, I wish they would've kept him around
I think the writers underutilised Kevin because they didn't know how to use him. THey wrote themselves in a corner with the Winchester (or somebody) needing to protect him as the prophet, contrary to other characters likes Charlie or Garth that can come and go as ideas for their characters pop up or dwindle down. It is a shame because Kevin (same as a lot of other side characters) was a very interesting addition to the show. And I agree that the actor Osric Chau, has so much talent. It is as if the showrunners were afraid of expending the number of regular characters in that show.
I think your pure shock and horror about Kevin got to me more than your tears. That said, it again broke my heart, Jess, seeing you cry over the BEYOND unfairness of Kevin’s fate.
I definitely agree with you that Kevin could have been used more. I feel that way about all the side characters in this show, actually. Kevin, Castiel, Bobby, Jody, Garth, Crowley, etc. There are so many really great side characters who could have episodes devoted to them but they often get cast aside so we can have yet another monster-of-the-week story where Sam and Dean find an old hunter buddy of their dad's so they can go and clear out a vampire nest or haunted house.
So its debatable, but personally I think Kevin got screwed over the worse in this show. Guy had his whole life uprooted, was hunted by demons and abandon on his own spent all of last season working himself to death over a tablet and trials that were never finished and this season even though he was straying at the Bunker with Dean & Sam was only in 3 episodes before being killed off for shock value.
It pissed me off to no end how last season, Kevin was pushed so hard and lost so much, all in the service of doing the trials and closing Hell for good. The importance of that was stated over and over again ... Only for the Winchesters to "chicken out" when it came to paying a high price themselves. Fuck Kevin's sacrifice them. Kevin deserved to kick their ass and get out.
Something I wish they differently (besides not killing Kevin) I wish there had been more episodes building a relationship between Kevin & Sam. I'm yeah their friends but they didn't have any big bounding moments, last one they had was at the start of season 8. Which is a shame because Kevin & Sam have similar personalities and dreams, they could've given these two a real brotherly relationship which would've made Kevin's death have more weight on Sam. Instead the writers made Kevin's death have a greater impact on Dean, though their relationship wasn't perfect they shared more moments together and with that scene during the second episode of this season, it cements Dean's feeling about Kevin better than what we got with Sam. Plus theirs the guilt of since Dean trusted Gadreel that was what lead to his death

From that perspective, the show fails at utilizing side-characters; both for their own stories, but especially also for what they can add to the main characters (aside from the angst of losing someone!). When you have two main characters that have to, more or less, always be together, whose relationship is restrained by what the overall format of the show allows, then side-characters become vital. That's where the freedom is to explore and to challenge, that's where the tension is. The show doesn't use it's side-characters well enough, and it's damned shame, because they have quite a few very good ones. Kevin took a bit to grow on me, but I came to really enjoy him, and was excited to see where they might take him.

This was the mid-season finale of Season 9 that they aired in December before it went on a 6-7 week hiatus where they left you seriously hanging. Yes, the death of Kevin was shocking, very cruel, very brutal. Someone has already mentioned that Kevin was almost like a younger brother to Sam and Dean, which made his death that much more painful.

I was shocked by Kevin’s death when it originally aired. I had the same reaction as you. Also, don’t worry about pronouncing Gadreel. Everyone on the show pronounces it differently sometimes the same character even pronounces it differently from episode to episode.
They say only a small percentage of people can connect emotionally to music and screen play. It makes it so much more enjoyable that you are able to do this. You cry, I cry 😅
I agree with you wholeheartedly I definitely feel they could’ve given him some more time and taking some away from some other overly drawn out or unnecessary storylines within the last season and a half. But I also believe that they definitely needed to not put a heavy focus on him in this episode, as you said, because it would be too easy to tell that he was going to bite it. I agree with a lot of people in the comments saying that they felt he was under utilized because let’s be honest he was lately 😔
I would add Sam and Cas' little "Agent" exchange. Cas is so adorably eager to play an agent here, to be part of the team, and Sam's sorta fond playing along was quite fun to me.

The only episodes I liked this season were in the first half before this episode, and with using little spoilers as possible the only episodes or parts I liked in the second half were the ones that didn't focus on the brothers.

This entire season is probably my second to least favorite. Metatron as the main villain, Angel Sam and killing off Kevin are the main reasons why.
