When Lincoln was inaugurated president, the south didn’t wait to see what he’d do. They just assumed that he would be a threat to their interests. Even after the outbreak of the war, Lincoln gave priority to restoring the Union and even said that he would have an amendment passed to protect slavery where it already existed forever. It wasn’t until near the end of his life where Lincoln embraced the abolitionist cause, as he felt that he owed it to the African American veterans who fought and died for the Union.

Conservative then meant “not changing what didn’t need to be changed” (slavery) conservative now means conserving the constitution the way it was written, not changing it to “adapt to modern times”
