Clearly I need to get my sprint fitness in check ladies and gents. Happy with the opening laps speed, but I need to be able to hold that through the whole moto. Always work to be done...keep on grinding and trying our best! See ya'll at LL
Maybe its just basic stuff? It's kinda hard to tell from the footage. Try and stay relaxed and make sure you are still breathing. If you can keep up your pace during practice then you can do it during a race.
Think you need a training partner to push the pace with you in practice. Hard to find but someone there pushing the pace would help improve your sprint fitness imo.
I’m just going to put this out there and you can take it however you like. How many of the guys you just lined up against just graduated from Medical School? You can’t possibly expect to progress at the same pace as those guys who’s life revolves around the sport year around and has revolved like that for years. I grew up in Montana racing....in the 70s and 80s....ya....I’m old. By about August, some of us were keeping up with some of the guys getting to ride year around. How far do you figure we fell off by March/April of the next year? Keep putting in the work. I understand the frustrating disappointment but I know that you’ll continue to push yourself as hard and fast as you’re able. I’ll continue to watch and dream of days gone by. Soak it up Jeff. Soak it up.
Southern California we raced year round and pretty much every weekend factory guys were always on the gate. Sunday after we raced supercross on Saturday was always full of factory guys. I watch races now from the 80s and it was normal to see local pro's beating factory guys. Oh those were the days.

People forget the goat won damn near all his titles on the back of a zook , they only recently started being looked at as bad bikes remember what wins on Sunday sells on Monday (ktm and Honda)
What up Jeff! If you’re struggling with race pace laps after your 3rd or 4th lap try conserving your energy by simple breathing exercises. Try running race pace with water in your mouth as long as you can during practice. It will force you to breath through your nose. By breathing through your nose since it takes longer to get a full breath of air you will actually have more oxygen in your blood for longer periods of time thus helping with fatigue. Altitude mask also helps when training. Suspension tuning is also imperative because even though it may feel good or you may feel fast it could be hurting your over all lap times in the long run because of the fatigue. You are graphing down gradually and then fall off. You need to be graphing up and then leveling out. Dont be scared to go softer on high speed compression and stiffer on low speed. The Faster rebound you have the better. Use all the stroke in the forks and shock. Test over whoops. Braking bumps, steep doubles, berms/rutts and holeshots. Im sure you know most of these things but the setup and training are not hand in hand. I tune suspension and i can promise you how much better it would be. Think about it most top tier pros have the perfect suspension for supercross/ outdoor. When its off it makes a massive difference.
Hey Jeff......Jeffro from Vital. I try not to comment or give any advice towards someone that is / was faster than I ever was , but I'll just leave this here in hopes you'll see it. 1st off.........don't ever get down on yourself , after putting in everything you have. It is what it is. Some days you will feel invincible and you won't fade at all. 2nd......You already know when / where in the moto you dropped a few %. And you already know you got sucked into that " I'll just stay right here and ride it in " mode. 3rd.....I don't think your issue is fitness. It's in the head , more than it's in your body. I know your fit. Everyone could use more ( we know that )..........it's a point of not wanting to settle. Like I said , I try not to comment or give advice towards anyone faster than I have ever been , but I did do expert stuff for over 20 years. I know the difference between " Body fatigue " and " mind fatigue ". Point being......you are doing great , but we all have our " off days ". Don't ever let this shit get you down. You already know you're better than that. Just my $0.02.
Noren's JGR Suzuki is definitely fast! Compression ratio's of factory bikes are a big secret. Nobody will mention any specific numbers, but when a motor gets rebuilt regularly you dont worry about running it real high...
You need a very tight corner track doing 15 mins on it at a time, it will help because you have no time to relax on a continual turn into turn track. Great vid Jeff 👏 ( ps turn the power down on the bike until you are fit enough to use it all because it will be making you tired )
man the guy on the first lap right ahead of you that was bombing the downsides on the edges of the track was moving... You are riding great man. Keep it up Brother.
I went over the bars 3 times watching this. That jump that Marshall does from the camelback to the first little table is so much bigger in a helmet cam!
Hey buddy stop beating yourself down like that. You are crazy fast and better than a lot of people. We all have your back and support you no matter what happens. Good luck on your races this year. keep your head up and keep being a bad ass on a dirt bike.
Back when I was a kid racing, I was known in my club and at some national events to 90% pull holeshots on concrete start gates. My dad used to broom all the dust off then use a wire brush on the concrete. It helps alot with grip
Local heat Timmy Crosby and Vinnie Lahovey doin work. Timmy is insanely talented and Jeff was faster in a few places so that says a lot. Awesome video.
The pace is there at the start, if you could hold it you'd be unstoppable. Also it looks hard to make passes on this track, so you might have better luck at a national. Great vid!!!
I think your sprint speed is there. I’m not sure what your training week looks like but I do know that if I am cramming in more than two hard sections of intervals per week, in this case motos, and I feel flat at races it is usually because my base, zone 2, is lacking. Another thing that helped me was attacking all my zones the day before a race, openers, to get that nervous system firing at all levels so that I can control my heart and breathing
was you the same on the 250 ? As i dont remember this being an issue then (i could be wrong ? ) I am sure the 450 takes more out of you so mayby its strength trainning rather than the fitness ??? Either way i am interested in the solution so keep grinding .. Been following coach rob of he is a wealth of knowledge ..
My youngest son used to race both Joey Crown and Brock Papi, on 50's he couldn't touch them, but on 65's he beat Papi once and was only close to Crown. After Papi beat him, his dad bought my sons 65 off me to go to Lorettas and he ended up 2nd on it. Funny thing is I built that motor myself and that's what he loved...and I was just playing around with it. Small world.
Hi Jeff I'm pretty sure I know what kind of fitness you are looking for ,and its a mixture of aerobic and anaerobic exercise a typical workout would be 2hrs of working out with free weights for the anaerobic part then at least a 3 mile run at least 4 times a week ,and one of the runs has to be at least 6 miles ,that will build your strength and stamina and take my word for it you will be able to operate at 120% and still have more in reserve - good luck
You’re right that KTM shreds,it seems way faster than your Honda and you looked really good on the track, great lines and it was rough though for sure you would pass the kaw Not a sand track you did great !
It’s your training environment. Wish you were “back in CA” training. Gotta be constantly surrounded by fast(er) guys, even at the local track. It plays on your psyche and your psyche is what you should look at. Your bike and fitness seem fine.
Jeff, I said while ago you needed to train with Club Mx or something. But forget about it, to late now. You looked really good considering that was Freddy Noren in front of you. You have the fitness it's in your head.
Your fitness isn’t the problem. You have that during practice. You can go fast for a while in practice but when it comes to chasing, you over exert yourself. Adapt to exertion. If can, practice chasing.

With that being said no more “Karening”, stay Psyched bro......Be positive, point out the good thing’s,Always...then be positive about your self Kritiques...yes I meant to spell it that way because we all have a lil Kryptonite within us to try and pull us down... Great Job my brother!!!!!!!! God Bless You. Danny Nelson Chesterfield,VA
Think you are a bit harsh on yourself. You held up pretty good against Norén on a full factory ride and has a lot more experience on the big bike than you and so on... Great ride!
Hey Jeff, I think what’s causing you to get tired is the inconsistent speed following other riders. Your obviously on another level then me but whenever I follow someone who is different speeds in different sections I get tired quick. It’s better to just run a different lane and hold your same energy. It’s the same as hitting the “wall” when running. Inconsistency messes it up bad. I noticed you got tired after the guy in the Kawasaki messed up and slowed you down in a corner and you were having to follow him at inconsistent speeds. Next race try and keep your own consistent pace even if it means a slightly slower lane so that you can keep your energy. Hopefully this helps, helped me out a ton! Great vid! Always like the longer GoPro vids!
Man, I feel you. I can do 30 min motos on practice days, then when race day comes I can barely last a 15 min race without getting tired and slowing down. I don't know if its because of the nerves, adrenaline or the rougher track conditions but yeah I really need to figure it out too
Its hard to replicate race intensity when you're practicing Best to practice with faster riders, they show you new lines and prove how much quicker it is to go, than you are Then soon, you'll be on their pace, then faster Or get a practice coach if you can I can definitely see you got the skill and you're always looking ahead and not following, which is key It might take a little time, but youre well on your way Great watching from over here in the UK

I'd suggest checking your breathing. I would catch myself holding my breath at time during a race but not in practice. I didn't even realize that I was doing it and had the same effect on me like you're experiencing.
Thank you for the great content JW841. I recently got the Alpinestar SM08 helmet and I'm curious which chin mount you are using now? Best of luck for the upcoming season.
Try riding the roughest track you can find on practice days. Ride super long motos if the roughest terrain you can get. Have someone time your laps and if you start falling off the pace. Pit board notes to pick it up. If you practice on groomed tracks all the time then move to moto track, you're working harder on race day.
I grew up on dirtbikes. Havent touched one in 10 years and i kinda want to get back into it. Suggestions? Im thinking a 250 suzuki but i cant be sure as i dont know much anymore

Don’t over think this race. It was 100 degrees out and pleasure valley is a bitch of a track. Especially for first timers.
Its mental thing. You are just too worked up about the race, im sure your fitness is more then enough.
Brian Deegans said that ur breathing is the most vital part of riding

Yes Jamea great advice. Maybe you could go do a test day with Jeff and maybe your knowledge will help him out. 👍🏻
4:32 big thanks to kawasaki ;)
Dam that Suzuki blew the doors off your Ktm 😂
The difference between a privateer bike vs a factory team! Also Jeff not doing many concrete starts probably had something to do with it too 😂
U looked way faster this vid I must say!
jeff is always lookin fast asf
Ethan Fowles ye I was just saying he was looking better than previous vid
Justin Campbell gotchu brotha
Sat in my armchair in the UK,it looked pretty good to me Jeff, 😀🤟
Your stress level goes much higher during a race then a practice , that’s probably why your energy drops quite a bit on race day 👍🏻
