Karna is strong and insolent. He is skilled in weapons and a maharatha. He is accomplished and colourful in fighting. He knows about time and place. He is like the fire in his energy. He is like the wind in his speed. He is like Yama in his anger. The powerful one is capable of withstanding a lion. The mighty-armed one’s chest is one aratni in breadth.He is extremely difficult to defeat. He is very proud and brave. He is extremely valiant and handsome. He has all the qualities of a warrior and is terrible to his enemies.

Taking up that best of bows that Brahmacharin stood placing (both the bow and his feet properly). And fixing the arrow on the bowstring, he began to stretch the latter duly. Beholding the manner of his seizing the handle of the bow and drawing the string and placing of his feet, and hearing also the Mantras uttered by Bhava, the son of Pandu, of inconceivable prowess, learnt everything duly. The mighty and puissant Brahmacharin then sped that arrow to that same lake. And he once more threw that bow also in that self-same lake. Then Arjuna of good memory knowing that Bhava was gratified with him, and remembering also the boon the latter had given him in the forest, and the sight also he gave him of his person, mentally entertained the desire, 'Let all this become productive of fruit!' Understanding this to be his wish, Bhava, gratified with him, gave him the boon. And the god also granted him the terrible Pasupata weapon and the accomplishment of his vow. Then having thus once more obtained the Pasupata weapon from the supreme god, the invincible Arjuna, with hair standing on end, regarded his business to be already achieved."

Karan was never a warrior that could match Arjun, he did not die simply because of his divine armour that he had since birth. He had gained 1000 armours in the last birth as a demon from the Sun God (Suryadev) and had 999 of them broken before he ran to save himself. Though he could not be killed easily, he never had enough skill to match Arjun and the following stories verify the same:
Before that I would like to those who say Karan is the student of Arjun's teacher's teacher (Bhagwaan Parshuram is the Guru of Arjun's Guru Dronacharya). Let me remind you that Arjun has not only learnt from Parshuram's Guru Mahadev but has also impressed Mahadev by fighting him. Mahadev was satisfied with the display of strength and that is all anyone can do in front of Mahadev who is the all powerful.
1. During the exile of the Pandavas, Karan and Duryodhana had tried to belittle the Pandavas and in the process had enraged a celestrial Gandharv called Chitrarath. Duryodhan who had started the fight too boastful of Karan's strength was imprisoned by Chitrarath and Karan who was extremely injured had fled the battle. In the end it was Arjun who saved Duryodhana and Karan.
2. In the battle of Virat, Arjun had single handedly without an army had defeated Duryodhan and his 99 brothers, Bhishma, Dronacharya, Kripacharya and many other warriors.
The only reason Arjun did not kill Karan because in the first occasion because Karan was injured and was in need of his protection and in Virat war his primary objective was to free the cows of the nation's king. He had also taken an oath that he will not use a weapon that is higher than the level of strength of his enemy. Else he had complete mastery of such divine weapons and could use them infinitely, while other humans could only fire them just once.
When Karan had fired his Brahmastra, Arjun very easily countered it with his own Brahmastra. Then Arjun selected Rudrastra to kill Karan but when he saw that Karan has weakened after his Brahmastra was defeated then he used a very less powerful Anjalikastra which cut Karan's head clearly off his body granting him a quick and merciful death. So those who write and speak of fictional stories like Karan donating the gold from his teeth or of him talking to Mata Kunti and Pandavas is all a lie.
Karan never respected anyone and was an abusive character and also one of those who caused the war of Kurukshetra in Mahabharat.
