Great to see Pettibon covered here. This kind of art was my route into comics rather than the other way around so I’m always happy to see what would be considered a more outsider style covered.
In one week we got Dan Clowes, Alex Toth, JRR, and Raymond Pettibon: I love Cartoonist Kayfabe. Thanks for keeping me excited about comics and inspired to put pen (or whatever) to paper (or wherever).
I just saw some Pettibon pieces at the MoMA in NYC in August. I was surprised to see it was framed original inks, and not photocopies wheat-pasted to the walls. Haha. It's cool to see he has crossed into the "Fine Art" world. Great episode guys! Thanks for sharing!
The love and rockets reference piece you were looking for is the art on the back of the Nervous Breakdown album, that book only had the art on the front cover. Loving both black flag and comics, this episode feels tailor made for me
One artist from the punk scene that has been sadly underappreciated is Shawn Kerri: she did some of the most iconic flyer art of the era, designed the mascots for Circle Jerks & The Germs, and was ridiculously prolific for about ten years drawing CARtoons, undergrounds (Commies from Mars, Cocaine Comix, etc), Cracked, and dirty cartoons for Hustler, Chic, and other porno magazines. Her draftsmanship and layouts are impeccable, and though it's her own unmistakable style, there's clearly a lot of Jack Davis and Wally Wood influence in the mix. Almost nobody had heard from her for a while, she wasn't still working by the mid 90s, and as she was well-known to have some serious hard drug problems, it was widely assumed that she had overdosed and died--I read a lot of sources online that claimed this back in the early 2000s. Some blogger did some extensive digging and found out that she had sustained a serious head injury in a bicycle accident at some point, and due to severe cognitive problems had been living at home with her mother for the last several decades (not sure if she's still alive now, though she was as recently as 2017). Obviously, I'd love to see a Cartoonist Kayfabe episode on her stuff! I dunno if you guys read comments from earlier posts, but if you see this, do a Google image search for her art.
Guys at 15:37 of the video you went past the nervous breakdown 7 inch cover what ed was on about was the back cover of the single, Thanks for another great video guys
God damn finding episodes like this months after Ed’s shuffled off into cartoonist heaven makes me miss you guys so much! Hope you boys are doing okay after such a senseless loss. Sending you both love and prayers.
At UCLA art school 2000 I met a punk friend who stole that big book in the middle by taking it to the art store restroom, chucking it out of a window, and walking out to pick up his Raymond Pettibon book. This guy also introduced me to LA’s still going all ages DIY artsy music venue The Smell.
Awesome video, guys! I still have my Nervous Breakdown 7" hung up on my living room wall after about 25 years. Pettibon is phenomenal and it's great to see a discussion in 2021 of his very engrossing work.
My 1st music experience was Black Flag in 1984 and it was a life changing event, was able to see plenty of Pettibon back then. Big fan. Thank you for this episode!
I've got CDs by Sonic Youth and Firehose with Pettibon's art on the covers but otherwise never looked into his art so this episode was a great education for me.
I'd be game to see some of those other guys that have crossed over into comics. Just to see what work they've done, never know when you find your newest inspiration.
I'm the same age as the Kayfabe guys and their comments on their college art school experience always make me scream hallelujah. The professors really sneered at you for being influenced by comics. I knew some students that even hid that fact from the instructors.
cool video guys. I was familiar with Pettibon's work on Sonic Youth and Black Flag album covers. I think the line-up art which inspired Jaime Hernandez was on the back cover of the Black Flag Nervous Breakdown EP on SST. I wonder how much of that is controlled because SST was run and owned by his brother Greg Ginn. Great work. The late 80s and early 90s had many music zines like the Big Takeover with work from independent artists. I wish I still had some of those.
You guys are great! I have the Akira boxset and I got the Ray Pettibone Homo Americanus being delievered this week! All based on the recommendations! Keep making these vids!
art school must suck. i went throught architecture school and it was all drawing all the time. we did 6 years of life drawings 8 hours a week. the only thing we did not get to do was artist autopsy drawings like the original beaux arts in paris. but for the people who wanted to there was a path but you had to drive 2 hours to the capitol and draw with the med students. i am still kicking myself for not doing it. Oh and homework was a full sketchbook turned in at the end of semester ,
Dope... was hoping yall would do for something like this for Raymond. Ya'll should do a comparison of One's One Punch Man with the his original web comic version vs the manga version... Its amazing how much of a good cartoonist One is with his skill set that looks like a 1st grader drew it.
Love Pettibone! Excellent choice. KAYFABE HAS RANGE! -and that's what makes it great. About that $800k drawing. If it was one of his wave drawings then it was likely HUGE. Drawing? You could rightly call it that, though it would likely have been a very large, painting sized drawing.
The ultimate youtube taboo: eventually you will see some cartoon penises if you watch enough videos! I had no idea how prolific an artist Pettibon was, just always thought of him as the Black Flag guy and nothing else.

Original pieces of his can go for upwards of $20k. I've never seen one for under $6500

I generally like all of the videos you guys do, but THANK YOU for this one.
Cool look guys. You guys rock. Keep it up.
the episode I didn’t know I needed
y’all are unstoppable
My 1st music experience was Black Flag in 1984 and it was a life changing event, was able to see plenty of Pettibon back then. Big fan. Thank you for this episode!
Please show more! I am totally into artists like Raymond Pettibone!
wow, Raymond Pettibon! Selection like that is why I like your channel.
Loved the flyer art of the 80,s. i still have some OG Pettibon B.F. flyers ...framed.
Pettibon is to the punks what Crumb was to the hippies
Well said
One of my biggest inspirations
More of this would be great. Maybe the Panter sketchbooks would be on the list.
This is one of those kind of comments but Ray for a short time played bass in Black Flag early on.
the episode I didn’t know I needed
This may have just become my favorite video
I discovered Raymon Pettibon through his Sonic Youth "Goo" cover (shown at 8:59)
Thank you. I need to check out more work by Pettibon.
This is so worthwhile. Thanks
Thank you! Comics discussions that don't include Pettibon, Panter, etc. are incomplete and lacking
Jaime Hernandez made some flyers for shoes back in the day in oxnard. Look up dr. Know Hernandez brothers and you can’t miss it
Loose Nut is the album cover art that was used without his permission
I've got CDs by Sonic Youth and Firehose with Pettibon's art on the covers but otherwise never looked into his art so this episode was a great education for me.

One of my fastest clicks on a Kayfabe video.
Thank you for such amazing content! I would love it if you guys covered Derek Hess, James Jean and the comic Echolands.
I know this guy from the Sonic Youth album cover 8:59
I'm the same age as the Kayfabe guys and their comments on their college art school experience always make me scream hallelujah. The professors really sneered at you for being influenced by comics. I knew some students that even hid that fact from the instructors.
Great Video.
Wow! Yes! This is it man! Raymond is a straight gangster🙏🏼

That box set is pretty rad but I wish it was the colored version.

You guys should do an episode on Marcel Dzama.
Well, I own the Black Flag catalogue, so I know him.
Would love to see you guys take a look at Sean Kerri’s work
YESSS!!!!

Fuck yeah!!!!

🔥🔥🔥
this was great - thanks for pushing outside of "comics" a bit
fuck yes
Yes, Ron English Please!!!👍
To quote Thurston Moore, “Raymond Pettibon is NOT French.”
The ultimate youtube taboo: eventually you will see some cartoon penises if you watch enough videos! I had no idea how prolific an artist Pettibon was, just always thought of him as the Black Flag guy and nothing else.
ya do ron english
Black Flagg 🏴 , man I didn’t know they did comic art. Wonder if NOFX made a cookbook.
