- Walking tour of Ericeira, Portugal, with detailed historical information and context, as well as immersive ambient sounds. Ericeira, located 50 km (31 miles) northwest of Lisbon, is considered the surfing capital of Europe and one of only five World Surfing Reserves on the planet.
Perched on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, the charming (former) fishing town of Ericeira, with its pretty narrow streets and colorful houses, metamorphoses into a lively holiday resort during the summer months, with numerous cafes, restaurants and bars opening up alongside its long, sandy beaches.
Ericeira was also the scene of an important moment in Portugal’s long and chequered history, which I'll tell in detail.

Sim, a família Imperial foi expulsa, após a abolição da escravatura.
Dom Pedro II e família foram duramente injustiçados, os barões do café e os Marechais, não suportaram a decisão de abolir os escravos.
Uma pena, um homem ímpar, que fez de tudo para o progresso do Brasil, sofreu graves consequências e foi se exilar na Europa, sua esposa faleceu de tanta tristeza e ele morreu não muito tempo depois.
Ele levou consigo um saco cheio de terra do Brasil e seu último desejo foi, ser sepultado com estas terras debaixo de sua cabeça 😢

Hello Jess and thank you for subscribing! 😀 Yes, Ericeira is often sunny and windy, although it gets much hotter in the summer compared to when I recorded this video. You only really feel strong winds when you close to the beaches, otherwise it's usually mild. Having said that, wind at Pescadores Beach is usually mild too.

Looking forward to see a video about Peniche, another famous surfing attraction in Portugal. Memorable presentation of King Manuel II's departure. At that time, France no longer had a monarchy. In 1945 the monarchy of the now defunct Yugoslavia was abolished, after the royals went into exile in 1941. Same happened to the Italian monarchy in 1946 and the Romanian monarchy in 1947 (under pressure from USSR, with many units of the Soviet Army being present in Romania at the time). Was it a domino effect? Was it the spread of antimonarchic ideas spurred by the ascension of USSR to the status of a superpower (the Russian Bolsheviks assassinated the Czar and his family in 1918; the Czar had abdicated the previous year) ?The Greek monarchy survived until 1973. So in the south of Europe, only the Spanish monarchy still exists. Re 8:14, I wonder what source states that the impersonator of King Sebastiao was executed by guillotine. King Sebastiao disappeared in 1578. The guillotine was suggested by the French physician Joseph-Ignace Guillotin in 1789 as a more humane procedure of execution. So the guillotine as designed by the French did not exist in the times of the friar who pretended to be King Sebastiao. Did the Portuguese invent an execution device like the guillotine two centuries before the French, but did not make a fuss about it?:)

The Sunday morning market is well worth a visit. Hope you are going to Obidos which is also well worth visiting. We were there over 20 years ago - we took my mother for her 80th birthday - she had never been abroad before.

I know this town, and I love it! But what I find in your video is that there is so much background noise! mostly traffic noise, even though there is hardly any traffic movement.
Hello Piedade! I usually avoid busy streets, but in such compact towns all streets are right next to each other, that's why you can hear the traffic but not see much of it 😊 Also, the microphone I use is very sensitive and powerful, it can capture audio from a big distance away, that's why it's possible to hear sounds, conversations, etc that are not present in most videos similar to mine.
The downside of it is that sometimes it can be a bit too much. My suggestion, if the video is too noisy, would be lower the volume of your computer/smartphone/TV a little bit 😊

I really like your videos, they give me a very good perception of what life is in places I haven't yet had the opportunity to visit. There is one thing you can improve, though, the bumping up and down while walking, it is quite irritating and take focus away from watching.
When you learn to handle that and give your walks a smoother rythm, your vidoes will lift to a much higher level.
Keep ut the good work, I've learned a lot from watching your videos and am spreading them to all my friends.
Thank you for your comment Ola! 🙂 I'm afraid the up and down movement can't be easily fixed, or fixed at all in a satisfactory manner. It's easy to stabilize the x axis and the y axis of a video, but the movement you mention is caused by the z axis.
There are 2 ways to do: 1) use a 4-way mechanical stabilizer (also known as gimbal), which are big and heavy gadgets, so not practical for long walks. But even that wouldn't fully eliminate the problem, would just reduce it. 3-way gimbals (like I have) don't do anything regarding the z-axis.
2) Walk very slowly while doing what's called the "ninja walk", which is how professional cameramen in movies do it. This works, but only for short scenes. The slower the camera moves forward the more boring the walk becomes. Imagine taking minutes just to walk a few dozen meters, with a non-changing scenery, no one would watch that. I notice when I'm walking in long, monotonous streets that viewership goes down immediately. Also, the ninja walk would look absurd to anyone looking on the street, plus it's too exhausting to do it for long periods. My walks are usually over an hour long, then I edited them down to 30-40 minutes.
There's a very fine balance between walking pace, viewership and up and down movement. Unfortunately, there are no perfect solutions.

Boa noite Eduardo! Concelho é exatamente o mesmo que munícípio aqui 😀 Freguesia é a unidade administrativa mais pequena do país, penso que é semelhante a "distrito" no Brasil. E distrito em Portugal também tem significado diferente, pois aqui é uma das maiores unidades administrativas. Há 18 distritos em Portugal, 308 concelhos / municípios e milhares de freguesias.
Ericeira é de uma zona amena, a temperatura é normalmente uns graus mais baixa que em Lisboa, mas não é uma zona fria. 😄 No verão e primavera é muito agradável.

Distrito= Capital
Concelhos = Cidades
Freguesias ou Vila = municípios
Por exemplo:

Is there a special reason why the buildings in Portugal seem to be so colorful ?.
Hmm... good question 🤔 Centuries ago, in some towns, the yellow color meant farmers lived there, blue was for fishermen, red for bourgeoisie, and gray for religious buildings. There are no such rigid rules nowadays, but that ancient tradition is probably one of the reasons for buidings being so colorful.

No inverno é um pouco mais fria e húmida, e bastante mais calma que no verão. Mas continua a ser agradável, especialmente para quem gosta de locais sossegados, com pouco barulho. 😊

Parabéns pelo vídeo! Está muito bem conseguido e vi-o do princípio ao fim com imenso gosto. Até aprendi algumas coisas! Mesmo com a mudança demográfica e crescente foco no turismo e alojamento local, penso que a vila da Ericeira conseguiu preservar a sua identidade e uma certa "magia". Prova disso é que não me farto de ver vídeos acerca da Ericeira e de passear pelas ruas.
Tendo já visitado a vila algumas vezes, logo me apercebi de como era especial, e esse sentimento só aumentou com consequentes visitas.

Sim, concordo, apesar do turismo, mudanças demográficas e sociais, a Ericeira mantém o eu "ar" de vila piscatória, pacata, pitoresca, mágica.

Olá Sheila! Se foi conhecer agora, então é normal que esteja frio, já estamos quase no meio de Novembro... Dezembro e Janeiro são os meses mais frios do ano em Portugal. Como localidade focada no turismo de praia, é natural que assim que o verão termina fique um local mais sossegado e com menos barulho. 🙂
